Live From the Vines: AtaraxiaHosted by William Lowe MW, Kevin Grant, Hanli Grant & Danie Stemmet Ataraxia is Greek for ‘a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation’, which gives you a sense of the doctrine being pursued at this family-owned winery in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The work of husband-and-wife team Kevin and Hanli Grant, Ataraxia began life in 2004 and, for now, covers just 12ha. Situated less than 5km from the Atlantic Ocean, its wines are sculpted by the cooling aspects of both altitude and coast, not to mention the underfoot terrain which is some of the oldest in the world. Kevin and Hanli invite William Lowe MW to discuss the untamed beauty and personality of this pocket of coastal South Africa, and to sample their hand-crafted wines which are also available as a tasting kit to digital members. Live From the Vines: I GreppiHosted by Nelson Pari & Dale Rees Heatley I Greppi’s territory is not the golden, undulating hills of picture-postcard Tuscany, but the region’s no less panoramic Bolgheri coastline, without which the Bordeaux-inspired wines which have forged I Greppi’s reputation would be unachievable. Here, the cooling hand of sea breezes allied to the heat-tempering influence of the I Greppi lakes creates a cosseted environment for this 35ha estate’s Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 67 Pall Mall’s wine buyer Nelson Pari joins I Greppi’s general manager Dale Rees Heatley to explore this harmonious union of the elements. Naturally, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and Rees Heatley has hand-picked a multi-vintage selection of I Greppi’s wines (available to digital members) which give testimony to the Edenic quality of Bolgheri. Live From the Vines: Domaine Guillemot-MichelHosted by Jasper Morris MW Located between the two Mâconnais villages of Viré and Clessé, Domaine Guillemot-Michel clearly neither aches to be ahead of the curve nor goes in much for market-led business plans; until 2014 Pierrette Michel and her husband Marc Guillemot- who have run the family estate organically since 1982 and biodynamically since 1991 - only made one, sole wine. Even today the entire range numbers less than a handful, but it’s an inspirational, captivating, jewel of a collection. It includes a cuvée made from 65-year-old vines vinified in 800-litre terracotta amphora, a méthode ancestrale sparkling, plus eau-de-vie produced using old Burgundian stills heated by wood that’s cut and gathered from the local forest by the Guillemot-Michel family themselves. In Good Spirits: Cambridge DistilleryHosted by William Lowe MW, Alex Rushmer & Kiki Hopkins Achieving Master of Wine status necessitates sacrifice, intellect, drive and a thick skin; to do so when you’ve already gained your Master Distiller wings suggests an individual of notable propulsion. William Lowe MW completed the set in 2020 - becoming the first person to hold both – and he brings the same ‘no limits’ attitude to Cambridge Distillery which he founded with his wife, Lucy. Renowned for using only fresh ingredients and treating each botanical delicately and individually, Lowe takes Kiki Hopkins around the Cambridge Gin Lab, unpacking the formulas and art behind premium gin production. There’s time to concoct a distillate from a bunch of fresh lemon verbena leaves, before the pair sit down with chef Alex Rushmer and taste through a medley of Cambridge Distillery’s diverse creations. Hidden in Plain Sight with Demetri Walters MW – Part 2 – Reds | Wednesday 20th October£180.00Part 2 – Reds In this, the second session of a two-part wine event series,’Hidden in Plain Sight’, Demetri Walters MW examines some well-loved red wine styles that have, along the way, been overtaken in the fashion stakes by more popular wine styles. Each of these wines are, in their own right, classic, though not necessarily well-known beyond enthusiast circles. They are, however, cherished by those in the know, who value their historical significance, cellaring potential and sheer drinkability. Each, to varying degrees, have been victims of the shifting sands of wine-drinking fashion. Despite this, all of them possess an iconic status in our affections. Wines to be tasted: Freestone Occidental, Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, California 2017 Alvaro Palacios, L’Ermita, Velles Vinyes, Priorat Spain, 2017 Sadie, Treinspoor, Swartland 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve, Tenuta Fontodi, Panzano, Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy 2012 Cornas, Domaine Auguste Clape, Rhône, France 2007 Almaviva, Maipo Valley, Chile 2009 Wednesday 20th October St James’s Room 18:30 - welcome drink on arrival 19:00 - seated workshop to begin £180 per ticket £350 for both parts, click here to purchaseAdd to cart

The Expert Series: Introduction to the Loire Valley – RedHosted by Demetri Walters MW The Loire River is France’s longest, beginning in the country’s heated south then rising north before abruptly coursing west and making its way to the Atlantic. It is on this last stretch where you will find – on both banks – some of France’s most honoured wine regions yet, conversely, some of its most underrated reds. The effortlessly food-friendly Cabernet Franc is the main player here and understandably takes centre stage as Demetri Walters MW concludes his Loire Valley profile. However, as Walters digs into the region’s winemaking heritage and highlights some of today’s leading practitioners, he also reveals more about the lesser-spotted Sancerre rouge, and opens a wine made from Grolleau, historically a high-yielding, workhorse grape, which has been transformed into anything but by one of our featured producers. Domaine Claude Riffault, La Noue, Sancerre Rouge 2018 Catherine & Pierre Breton, Grolleau 2017 Yannick Amirault, La Source, St. Nicolas de Bourgueil 2019 Fabrice Gasnier, Vieilles Vignes, Chinon 2018 Jacky Blot, Domaine de la Butte, Le Pied de la Butte, Bourgueil 2018 Clos Rougeard, Saumur-Champigny 2008 Please note that the Fabrice Gasnier, Vieilles Vignes, Chinon 2019 is replacing the Fabrice Gasnier, Vieilles Vignes, Chinon 2018 tasted during the episode.Read more

Live From the Vines: Urla WineryHosted by Demetri Walters MW & Can Ortabas Established in 2006 by Can Ortabaș, Urla Winery - on Turkey’s Aegean coast - is something of a young buck, yet its inspiration and true genesis stretches back over 3,000 years, to a time which saw the planting on his property the ruined, terraced vineyards that Ortabaș chanced upon in 2000. Today, Urla Winery is one of the Aegean’s most dynamic producers: forever forward thinking, while at the same time drawing on its homeland’s winemaking heritage, even reviving its ancient varietals. Hosted by Master of Wine Demetri Walters alongside Can Ortabaș, this tasting is a rare opportunity to delve into the distinctive, characterful wines crafted by a winery which represents part of a new wave of Mediterranean ambition. The Expert Series: Introduction to the Loire Valley – WhiteHosted by Demetri Walters MW From the buffeted, Atlantic-kissed vineyards of Muscadet in the extreme west, to the superstar appellation of Sancerre at its eastern edge, the Loire Valley’s spectrum of wines is dazzling, there existing a diversity of styles capable of going head-to-head with the most challenging of menus. Managing on this occasion to confine himself to the region’s whites, Demetri Walters MW has curated a glorious Loire snapshot, revealing sparkling Crémants - produced in the same time-consuming manner as Champagne - scented whites, and exquisite dessert wines which some other regions can only dream of. The Expert Series: Fortified Series – SherryHosted by Demetri Walters MW & Sarah Jane Evans MW We venture into the Sherry Triangle, that region of Andalucía demarcated by three cities, and which is home to one of wine’s most historic and idiosyncratic drinks. Over the last few years, talk of a sherry renaissance has been a constant thanks to an influx of winemakers and owners who have injected diversity and dynamism, complementing the region’s many centuries of hard-earned know-how. Sherry expert Sarah Jane Evans MW, along with fellow Master of Wine Demetri Walters, adds substance to the chatter, weaving the region’s history into a masterclass which shines a light on sherry’s various styles and its leading protagonists, framed by a sublime selection which is available as a tasting kit to digital members.
