Flavour chemistry: exploring aroma compounds in red wine – Monday 16th June
£75.00 – £90.00Price range: £75.00 through £90.00Doubtless Members will have heard people (possibly even our own Sommeliers) talk about wines showing notes of carbonic maceration or American oak. Or maybe even those mysterious pyrazines. Hundreds of these flavour and aroma compounds have been identified in wine, all of which can be traced back to different grape varieties, winemaking techniques and microorganisms. But what exactly are they and how do they impact the wine in your glass? Find out at this wine-tasting workshop with Netherlands-based flavour chemistry specialist Sietze Wijma of The Art of Tasting. Sietze has a MSc in Sensory Science and the WSET Diploma (and is also something of a beer expert, holding the Advanced Cicerone®). At this informal but informative session, he will explain the origins of 10 important flavour compounds in red wine, including rotundone, eucalyptol and vanillin, and teach you to recognise them. Members will receive 11 glasses of the same, neutral wine – the first glass is untreated, while the remaining 10 glasses each have an individual flavour compound added. After the origins of these flavours have been explained, you will try to identify each compound through a blind-tasting exercise. This is the perfect event for Members looking to take their tasting ability to the next level – or, indeed, for intermediate to advanced level wine students. St James's Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass ends Please note that we now offer a tasting board of charcuterie, cheese, olives and smoked crispy chickpeas to accompany your tasting. Tasting Chilean fine-wine trailblazer Clos Apalta – Tuesday 13th May (Non-Member)
£75.00 – £90.00Price range: £75.00 through £90.00Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page‘Chile – now a fine-wine producer’ was the headline of an article by Jancis Robinson MW earlier this year, marking what she perceived as the final step in the country’s progression from source of ‘cheap and cheerful’ wines to a far more notable status.
If you wanted one wine to chart this evolution, look no further than Clos Apalta. Founded in 1994 by the French family behind the Grand Marnier liqueur, with the help of superstar (and since ever-present) consultant Michel Rolland, the cuvée became the first South American wine to be crowned Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year back in 2008. A Bordeaux blend made via organic and biodynamic viticulture, the wine today stands as something of a reference point for quality in Chile, showcasing the richness and complexity of the Colchagua terroir on an old-vine, steep hillside site. We are delighted to welcome family owner and CEO Charles de Bournet Marnier Lapostolle to the Club to present three vintages of Clos Apalta as well as a selection of other wines from the estate, including the more recently launched, small-production Clos du Lican. A bold yet elegant Syrah, Clos du Lican’s distinctive freshness represents the next frontier for the property – exploring single-varietal wines with precision and personality and pushing the boundaries of what Chilean wine can achieve on the world stage. We invite you to join us to explore these compelling wines for yourself. The wines we will be tasting: 2012 Domaines Bournet Lapostolle, Clos Apalta Vinotheque, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2015 Domaines Bournet Lapostolle, Clos Apalta Vinotheque, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2021 Domaines Bournet Lapostolle, Clos Apalta, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2018 Domaines Bournet Lapostolle, Petit Clos, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2022 Domaines Bournet Lapostolle, Prelude, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2021 Domaines Bournet Lapostolle, Cote de Madame Viognier, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2020 Domaines Bournet Lapostolle, Clos du Lican Syrah, Colchagua Valley, Chile

Live From the Vines: Savage Wines
Hosted by Duncan Savage Duncan Savage’s Sauvignon sleight of hand puts him on a whole other level with the grape according to wine legend and fellow South African, Eben Sadie. Seeing as Savage worked under the peerless Didier Daganeau in the Loire Valley and was once winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards - whose Sauvignons and Sémillons under his watch hoovered up awards – his breeding is certainly impeccable. Yet there are many more strings to his bow, and here he introduces us to the full repertoire from his function-over-form urban winery, from which comes some of South Africa’s hottest tickets including Cinsault, Syrah and blends of both hues. Live From the Vines: Ataraxia
Hosted by William Lowe MW, Kevin Grant, Hanli Grant & Danie Stemmet Ataraxia is Greek for ‘a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation’, which gives you a sense of the doctrine being pursued at this family-owned winery in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The work of husband-and-wife team Kevin and Hanli Grant, Ataraxia began life in 2004 and, for now, covers just 12ha. Situated less than 5km from the Atlantic Ocean, its wines are sculpted by the cooling aspects of both altitude and coast, not to mention the underfoot terrain which is some of the oldest in the world. Kevin and Hanli invite William Lowe MW to discuss the untamed beauty and personality of this pocket of coastal South Africa, and to sample their hand-crafted wines which are also available as a tasting kit to digital members. Live From the Vines: I Greppi
Hosted by Nelson Pari & Dale Rees Heatley I Greppi’s territory is not the golden, undulating hills of picture-postcard Tuscany, but the region’s no less panoramic Bolgheri coastline, without which the Bordeaux-inspired wines which have forged I Greppi’s reputation would be unachievable. Here, the cooling hand of sea breezes allied to the heat-tempering influence of the I Greppi lakes creates a cosseted environment for this 35ha estate’s Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 67 Pall Mall’s wine buyer Nelson Pari joins I Greppi’s general manager Dale Rees Heatley to explore this harmonious union of the elements. Naturally, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and Rees Heatley has hand-picked a multi-vintage selection of I Greppi’s wines (available to digital members) which give testimony to the Edenic quality of Bolgheri. Live From the Vines: Domaine Guillemot-Michel
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Located between the two Mâconnais villages of Viré and Clessé, Domaine Guillemot-Michel clearly neither aches to be ahead of the curve nor goes in much for market-led business plans; until 2014 Pierrette Michel and her husband Marc Guillemot- who have run the family estate organically since 1982 and biodynamically since 1991 - only made one, sole wine. Even today the entire range numbers less than a handful, but it’s an inspirational, captivating, jewel of a collection. It includes a cuvée made from 65-year-old vines vinified in 800-litre terracotta amphora, a méthode ancestrale sparkling, plus eau-de-vie produced using old Burgundian stills heated by wood that’s cut and gathered from the local forest by the Guillemot-Michel family themselves. In Good Spirits: Cambridge Distillery
Hosted by William Lowe MW, Alex Rushmer & Kiki Hopkins Achieving Master of Wine status necessitates sacrifice, intellect, drive and a thick skin; to do so when you’ve already gained your Master Distiller wings suggests an individual of notable propulsion. William Lowe MW completed the set in 2020 - becoming the first person to hold both – and he brings the same ‘no limits’ attitude to Cambridge Distillery which he founded with his wife, Lucy. Renowned for using only fresh ingredients and treating each botanical delicately and individually, Lowe takes Kiki Hopkins around the Cambridge Gin Lab, unpacking the formulas and art behind premium gin production. There’s time to concoct a distillate from a bunch of fresh lemon verbena leaves, before the pair sit down with chef Alex Rushmer and taste through a medley of Cambridge Distillery’s diverse creations. Hidden in Plain Sight with Demetri Walters MW – Part 2 – Reds | Wednesday 20th October
£180.00Part 2 – Reds In this, the second session of a two-part wine event series,’Hidden in Plain Sight’, Demetri Walters MW examines some well-loved red wine styles that have, along the way, been overtaken in the fashion stakes by more popular wine styles. Each of these wines are, in their own right, classic, though not necessarily well-known beyond enthusiast circles. They are, however, cherished by those in the know, who value their historical significance, cellaring potential and sheer drinkability. Each, to varying degrees, have been victims of the shifting sands of wine-drinking fashion. Despite this, all of them possess an iconic status in our affections. Wines to be tasted: Freestone Occidental, Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, California 2017 Alvaro Palacios, L’Ermita, Velles Vinyes, Priorat Spain, 2017 Sadie, Treinspoor, Swartland 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve, Tenuta Fontodi, Panzano, Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy 2012 Cornas, Domaine Auguste Clape, Rhône, France 2007 Almaviva, Maipo Valley, Chile 2009 Wednesday 20th October St James’s Room 18:30 - welcome drink on arrival 19:00 - seated workshop to begin £180 per ticket £350 for both parts, click here to purchaseAdd to cart
