Masterclass of Ridge Vineyards, including four vintages of Monte Bello, with winemaker John Olney – Friday 14th March
£150.00 – £165.00There are many elements to Ridge Vineyards that mark it out from the average Californian producer. For a start, it can trace its history back to the 1880s, when vines were first planted at Monte Bello, high in the Santa Cruz Mountains. After being abandoned during Prohibition, the site was rediscovered in the 1950s by a group of Stanford graduates with no background in winemaking. Or, as founder Paul Draper once referred to them – ‘a part-time bunch of hippies’. Amazed at the quality of the wine they were able to make, the intrepid clan concluded that it can’t have been a result of what they were doing – it must have been the terroir. As more and more wineries sprung up in California in the 1960s, most focused on grape variety rather than site. Ridge continued to focus on the latter – a cool-climate spot high in the mountains, 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, that proved perfect for Bordeaux varietals. Today, Ridge makes around 30 different wines, from Mendocino to Paso Robles, but the core trio comprises the much-acclaimed Monte Bello Bordeaux blend, together with the Geyserville and Lytton Springs Zinfandels. We’re thrilled, then, to welcome winemaker John Olney to the Club to host a tasting of all three wines, including four vintages of the renowned Monte Bello going back a quarter of a century. John joined Ridge in 1996, starting at the Monte Bello winery before going on to lead the Lytton Springs site, building a new, largely solar-powered facility made from 3,000 bales of straw (yes, you read that correctly – straw is not only a renewable resource, but has a high insulation value, trapping the night air and keeping the winery cool, thereby reducing reliance on air-conditioning). He became head winemaker and COO in 2021, overseeing all winemaking operations at both the Monte Bello and Lytton Springs wineries. We invite you to join him for a very special tasting on a Friday evening in March. The wines we will be tasting: 1999 Monte Bello, Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountains 2002 Monte Bello, Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountains 2006 Monte Bello, Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountains 2013 Monte Bello, ‘Steep Terraces’, Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountains 2001 Zinfandel, Ridge Vineyards, Geyserville 2010 Zinfandel, Ridge Vineyards, Geyserville 2001 Zinfandel, Ridge Vineyards, Lytton Springs 2010 Zinfandel, Ridge Vineyards, Lytton Springs Friday 14th March St. James’s Room 18:30 – Welcome reception 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. New Zealand’s finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with Kumeu River – Monday 16th September
£95.00 – £110.00The story of the Brajkovich family and Kumeu River mirrors that of the New Zealand wine industry as a whole, from the pioneering days of struggle to global recognition for wines of elegance and precision. The original business was built from the ground up by Maté Brajkovich and his family, Dalmatian immigrants who arrived in New Zealand in 1938. But it was in the 1980s that Maté’s son Michael (who was to become New Zealand’s first Master of Wine) transformed the business, together with his brothers Milan and Paul. Today Kumeu River stands as one of New Zealand’s – and the southern hemisphere’s – most reputed makers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. We are delighted to have the property’s vineyard director Milan Brajkovich join us for a tasting of what he describes as ‘New World wines with an Old World twist’. Milan manages a total of 40 hectares of vines, including 10 hectares overseen by regional growers from whom he purchases grapes. The core of these holdings are in Auckland, whose cool climate ensures the Chardonnay ripens fully while retaining acidity, lending it both the texture and complexity that the variety can yield in the best sites. And the best sites have certainly been identified over the years – notably in the acclaimed single-vineyard wines, peaking with the superb Maté’s Vineyard and Hunting Hill Chardonnay, both of which will be tasted on the night. In more recent years the winery has expanded its reach to Hawke’s Bay, on the south-eastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island, from where Members will taste three vintages of both its Rays Road Chardonnay and its increasingly reputed Rays Road Pinot Noir. We look forward to welcoming you to sample the very best of New Zealand. Together we will experience the first time Queen’s music and the wines of Château Mont-Pérat are brought together in front of an audience. The ‘Irish’ Châteaux of Bordeaux with Raymond Blake | Friday 19th November 2021
£120.00Join Club Friend, Member, and leading Irish wine writer Raymond Blake for a relaxed introduction to the ‘Irish’ châteaux of Bordeaux. For centuries, Irish ex-pats and their descendants have had a significant influence in Bordeaux and Irish names abound there: Barton, Clarke, Dillon, Johnston, Kirwan, Lawton, Lynch, MacCarthy, Phelan, Quinn and others. The Irish achieved success both as château owners and négociants and the connection is not just historical, being given fresh emphasis when Lochlann and Brenda Quinn purchased Château de Fieuzal in 2001. During this presentation Raymond will lead us through an entertaining and informal wine tasting, rather than a structured masterclass, focusing on the people and the place, as well as the historical context and human stories behind the wines. Wines which will be tasted: Château de Fieuzal blanc 2018 Château Lynch-Bages, Blanc de Lynch-Bages 2015 Château de Fieuzal 2012 Château Lynch-Bages 2008 Château Langoa Barton 2005 Château Léoville Barton 2009 Friday 19th November 2021 St James’s Room 18.30 - Tasting begins 20:30 - Tasting finishes £120 per ticketAdd to cart -
Wine & The Food of Asia
£45.00 – £90.00Wine & The Food of Asia is 67 Pall Mall's third book. Authored by Head of Wine Asia, Richard Hemming MW in collaboration with the esteemed At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy, the book explores the intricate art of pairing wine with Asian cuisine, offering readers original insights into harmonising diverse culinary traditions with the world of wine. Wine & The Food of Asia is the culmination of extensive research, including hundreds of methodical tastings conducted over the course of a year. Featuring more than 400 wines from nearly 100 grape varieties across 20 countries, the book presents 80 iconic Asian recipes paired with an array of wines—from approachable favourites to rare gems—designed to captivate both casual wine enthusiasts and seasoned collectors. At the heart of the book lies a comprehensive exploration of pairing wine with the bold, diverse, and often challenging flavours of Asian cuisine. Richard Hemming MW brings over two decades of experience in viticulture, winemaking, and wine education to this ambitious project. By bridging the worlds of wine and Asian gastronomy, Hemming challenges traditional approaches and offers a fresh perspective on pairing wine with dishes from 13 countries, including India, Nepal, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea, Japan—and, of course, Singapore. In addition to being a wine reference, Wine & The Food of Asia doubles as a practical kitchen guide. Recipes for beloved dishes such as Pad Thai and Black Pepper Crab, provided by the culinary experts at the At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy, are accompanied by expertly curated wine pairings. For each recipe, Hemming suggests one primary match along with at least two alternative options, giving readers flexibility and inspiration. “Matching wine with food is about the pursuit of pleasure, not dogma. The most enjoyable part of creating this book was cooking the recipes at home and pairing them with great wines. For me, it’s all about bringing people together to share good food and wonderful wine. That’s the essence of what 67 Pall Mall is about,” shares Richard Hemming MW. Jeannie Cho Lee MW lauds the book, saying, “It was with delight and pleasure that I read this much-needed book. The world of wine is vast and deep; the world of Asian cuisine may be even more complex. Bringing the two together is nothing short of herculean!” Whether used as a wine guide, a cookbook, or a source of inspiration, this book is an essential addition to the collections of wine and food lovers everywhere. The book is priced at £45.00, the pricing below includes shipping. We kindly ask Members who wish to collect their order from Club to indicate their desired date in the order notes. Grand Siecle: Recreating the Perfect Year
£100.00Join us in the St. James's Room for an evening hosted by Lucie Pereyre, Représentant Grand Siècle, Maison Laurent-Perrier, where we will be tasting 8 delicious cuvées whilst learning about the illustrious history of this prestigious house. When Bernard de Nonancourt inherited Laurent-Perrier from his mother, becoming Director in 1948, he had a clear and determined vision of where he wanted to go. To establish the name and forge the reputation of the House he was looking to produce a prestige champagne that would realise his ambition. At that time prestige cuvées were synonymous with a single vintage. However, by observing nature and mindful of the taste and the characteristics he appreciated in a wine, Bernard realised that the « Art of assemblage » was the only way for him to reach his vision of perfection. This vision went beyond single vintages and has three core principles: blending 3 great vintages, selecting only grapes from a limited number of Grands Crus vineyards and ageing this blend for a minimum of 10 years on its lees to reach its best expression. It is the complementarity of all those elements allied with our wine making expertise that encapsulates Bernard’s vision of the perfect year. Grand Siècle was first released in 1959 and to date the house has released only 25 blends, called «Iterations », where the vision of this perfection is recreated every time. The wines that will be tasted: Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2008 Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2007 Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2006 Grand Siècle No. 24 Grand Siècle No. 25 Grand Siècle Magnum No. 22 Grand Siècle Magnum No. 23 Grand Siècle No. 19 Should the event sell out before you are able to secure a ticket, please register your interest on the waiting list using this form. Tenuta Luce, the Vision of Two wine-making legends
£90.00Join us in the St. James’s Room for a fantastic tasting of Luce wines hosted by Tenuta Luce winemaker and Chef des Cave Alessandro Marini, and Peter Ferguson, Global Sales Director for Marchesi di Frescobaldi. Montalcino is regarded as one of the world’s most unique wine appellations, its wines highly sought after by wine lovers and collectors internationally. Tenuta Luce, one of the few great Tuscan estates often referred to as “Super Tuscans”, is situated Southwest of the hilltop town of Montalcino, beginning as a project initiated in the early 90s with the meeting of two “legends” of wine, Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi. Choosing to make a wine together, the duo shared their knowledge to pursue the maximum expression of the terroir in a highly distinctive manner, through the blending of both the traditional Sangiovese varietal with the Merlot grape, a varietal unfamiliar within the Montalcino DOC. Since 2004, the Tenuta Luce Estate has been under the sole ownership of the Frescobaldi Family, and with Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi at the helm of the Luce project, ensuring that Tenuta Luce stands out amongst the finest estates of Tuscany. Members will enjoy a delicious and informative tasting of Luce wines guided expertly by the authoritative first hand knowledge of Alessandro Marini, who will reveal evocative details related to the making of the wine, and his expertise in the vineyards. Borgogno Masterclass with Luca Colia & Mattia Tabacco – Monday 24th October
£85.00Born in 1761 in the heart of Barolo, Borgogno is the oldest continuously operating Barolo producer who has stood witness to the most significant moments in Italian history. In 1861, the year of the Unification of Italy, Borgogno’s Barolo was chosen to accompany the official celebratory lunch. Today, it continues to be the expression of a territory with admirable traditions, and yet is re-inventing itself with promising prospects in the future. Borgogno believes that the making of extraordinary wines takes time. When Giacomo Borgogno took over the management of the winery in 1920, he implemented the forward-thinking policy of putting away stocks of good vintages in bottle and releasing them over two decades later, something our Members will be able to taste for themselves in the 1982 Giacomo Borgogno Riserva. Borgogno adopts the unconventional approach of valuing practice over theory in the cellar. Their wines are still made according to the traditions of long, spontaneous fermentations in concrete tanks without the use of selected yeasts, as well as long periods of ageing, strictly in large Slavonian oak barrels. Join Luca Colia, the Export Manager of Borgogno and Oeno Group Buyer, Mattia Tabacco, for a masterclass exploring the history and present-day of this distinguished winery, whilst sampling 5 outstanding wines dating back to 1982. If you struggle with booking a ticket via our website for any reason, please contact our team contacting [email protected]. Barolo and Barbaresco Masterclass with Elvio Cogno – Wednesday 26th March
£95.00 – £110.00We know that Members are big fans of Piedmont – and we have a special treat for you later this month, via a tasting with an estate that, over the last three decades, has established itself among the region’s most respected names. It was in 1990 that Elvio Cogno bought a modest 18th-century farmhouse and a few parcels of land in the somewhat neglected commune of Ravera, near the sleepy village of Novello. Of Barolo’s 11 communes, Ravera was traditionally the least celebrated, with most growers selling their grapes rather than making their own wines. Cogno, however, was born in Novello, and knew the potential of the Ravera vineyards. He set about redeveloping the vineyard sites with the help of his son-in-law Valter Fissore. Since Cogno’s passing in 2016, Valter has further championed the commune, producing Barolos that, besides boasting great ageing potential, manage to combine complexity and structure with finesse, freshness and sheer pleasure. Today, he produces four different Barolo from Ravera, each with its own distinctive character. ‘I like wines that show great differences in terroir,’ says Valter. ‘It’s a Burgundy-style project.’ And not just in philosophical terms – the vineyards are organically farmed, oak influence is minimal, and the wines ooze finesse and elegance, with tannins sowing a distinctly Pinot-like silkiness. We are delighted to welcome Valter to the Club for a tasting that will also include the racy, intense white wine that he makes from the indigenous Nascetta variety that he was in a large way responsible for saving from extinction; and an equally rare Barbera made from pre-phylloxera, 120-year-old vines, showcasing astonishingly velvety minerality. Do join us for what promises to be a fascinating evening hosted by a passionate winemaker. The wines we will be tasting (updated): 2022 Langhe Nascetta di Novello, Elvio Cogno 2021 Barbaresco Bordini, Elvio Cogno 2020 Barolo Cascina Nuova, Elvio Cogno 2020 Barolo Ravera, Elvio Cogno (from double magnum) 2012 Barolo Ravera, Elvio Cogno 2019 Barbera d’Alba Pre-Phylloxera, Elvio Cogno 2017 Barolo Vigna Elena Riserva, Elvio Cogno 2015 Barolo Bricco Pernice, Elvio Cogno Wednesday 26th March St. James’s Room 18:30 – Welcome reception 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass ends Please note that we now offer a tasting board of charcuterie, cheese, olives and smoked crispy chickpeas to accompany your tasting. Masterclass with legendary Napa estate Grgich Hills – Tuesday 8th April
£95.00 – £110.00When Miljenko ‘Mike’ Grgich died, aged 100, just over a year ago, he left an indelible legacy on the Napa Valley winemaking scene. Grgich came to fame via the celebrated ‘Paris Tasting’ of 1976, as the winemaker responsible for the 1973 Chateau Montelena that took top honours in the Chardonnay class. The success gave Grgich the confidence, a year later, to branch out alone, with the creation of his Grgich Hills winery (the Hills is a reference not to the Napa hillsides – the vineyards are on the valley floor – but to business partner Austin Hills of the Hills Bros coffee family). Initially making wine from bought-in grapes, he grew the brand to span vineyards across almost 150 hectares – predominantly Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. Almost half a century on, Grgich’s daughter Violet and nephew Ivo Jeramaz lead the estate. Like his uncle, Ivo grew up in Croatia to a family of grape growers. After coming to California in the 1980s seeking work as an engineer, he visited the Napa Valley, was struck by its scenic beauty, and became fascinated with winemaking. Sensing his nephew was open to a career change, Grgich put him to work washing barrels. ‘I started on $7 an hour,’ says Ivo. ‘I didn't care. I was happy to be here. He tested me for three years to see what kind of person I was. It took me 10 years before he gave me any responsibility.’ Today, Ivo is responsible for all day-to-day operations in the cellar and the vineyards, which he transformed to organic and biodynamic farming in 2003 – a decision he says it took only five minutes for his uncle to approve. Ivo says such an approach ‘allows the wines to be more authentic – more distinctive.’ We invite you to judge for yourself as we welcome Ivo to 67 Pall Mall to host what promises to be a thrilling tasting of Grgich Hills wines. 50th anniversary tasting of South African star Meerlust, including the inaugural 1980 vintage of Rubicon – Wednesday 14th May
£95.00 – £110.00While wine has been produced on Stellenbosch’s historic Meerlust Estate for over 300 years, it was only in 1975 that the wines appeared commercially, under the Meerlust label. The first release was a Cabernet Sauvignon, followed just five years later by Rubicon, South Africa’s first Bordeaux blend, which swiftly became a benchmark for the country’s fine-wine scene and remains the estate’s flagship wine. While Cabernet and Cabernet blends are now established as the signature style of Stellenbosch, back in the late 70s, such wines were a rarity. Along with Kanonkop, Meerlust was one of the few producers of the variety, and certainly the pioneer of the South African Bordeaux blend that it established with the 1980 release of Rubicon. As a result, its Cabernet vines are among the country’s oldest, yielding wines in a style, it says, that seeks to blend ‘Old World sophistication with New World vibrancy’. To celebrate Meerlust’s 50th anniversary, we are thrilled to welcome both Hannes Myburgh, the estate’s eighth-generation owner, and head winemaker Wim Truter to guide us through a tasting of ten wines, including several older vintages. The tasting will climax with the inaugural 1980 Rubicon, providing a chance to taste a wine which, due to the international boycott of South African wines throughout much of the 1980s and ‘90s, has rarely been seen on the UK market. Wine and Food. The Perfect Match
£40.00 – £85.00Written by Ronan Sayburn MS and Marcus Verberne, ‘Wine and Food. The Perfect Match’ features a comprehensive study of the world’s great wines, how to drink them and what foods to pair them with. Written with the passion of the true wine lover and aimed at all levels of wine aficionados, the book offers readers a wide range of choices to ensure the perfect bottle is chosen to go with a mouth-watering dish. This book is an expert guide through the world’s greatest pairings and belongs in everyone’s cookbook collection, designed for both the coffee table and to be overworked in the kitchen. The book is separated into two halves. The first half of the book is dedicated to wine, with Ronan Sayburn MS guiding readers through the mysteries of terroir, discussing the world’s best grape varieties, where they grow and why they taste the way they do. Advice is also given on the best way to drink different wines and how to host an unforgettable wine-led dinner. The second half of the book focuses on food and features 100 dishes created by Marcus Verberne. The chapters are categorised into: Sea and River, Land, Garden and Sweet. The recipes range from classics such as Cassoulet de Toulouse, to the Asian-inspired Thai Octopus Salad, to Saffron-poached Apricot & Almond Tart with Roquefort Ice Cream.
