Live from the Vines: Kutch Wines
Hosted by Jamie Kutch & Ronan Sayburn MS Ronan Sayburn MS journeys to the Sonoma Coast of California in this edition of ‘Live from the Vines’, where he meets Jamie Kutch, the ambitious owner of Kutch Vineyards who left a lucrative career in stock trading in 2005 to make the leap into the world of winemaking. Kutch wines are made as naturally as possible, hand-harvested before being sorted meticulously by gravity, the grapes are fermented in small open-top containers with hand and feet punch-downs, using only indigenous yeasts, before the wine is aged sur lie in French oak. Find out more about the history of the vineyard and its minimalist approach in an episode drenched in California sun. Live from the Vines: Eyrie Vineyards
£90.00Hosted by Jason Lett & Chevonne Ball ‘I cannot help but feel now that success will be ours,’ reads a 1965 journal entry by The Eyrie Vineyards’ founder, David Lett. Lett’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plantings represented a first for Willamette Valley, so success was by no means assured, yet both varieties are now synonymous with the region. David and his wife Diana were also the first to commercially plant Pinot Gris outside of Europe, and it’s this pioneering spirit which their son Jason preserves to this day, as evinced by a head-turning bottling of pure Pinot Meunier. Hosted by US sommelier and expert Chevonne Ball, Jason discusses his hands-off winemaking approach which incorporates natural fermentation with wild yeasts, skin contact for the whites, and barely a trace of new oak in the cellar, as demonstrated by the presence of a dozen barrels bought almost 50 years ago and which are still going strong. Live from the Vines: The Blank Bottle Winery
Hosted by Pieter Walser & Ronan Sayburn MS To understand the philosophy behind Blank Bottle Winery we trace its roots back to owner and winemaker Pieter Walser’s first customer. A woman visited his office 12 years ago, saying that she wanted to buy some wine, and that she liked everything apart from Shiraz. She then tasted some wine, loved it, and bought three cases. It was Shiraz. We join Pieter to understand more about why he says he wants nothing on his labels about the grape variety. The Expert Series: Germany | Riesling
Hosted by Anne Krebiehl MW Germany was always considered to be one of the finest wine-producing countries in the world, with Riesling prices similar to those of first growth Bordeaux in the early 1900’s. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, German wines fell out of fashion mainly due to the pursuit of higher yields. However, this wine producing nation had made a comeback and seeks to retake its position at the top table of fine wine production. Join Anne Krebiehl MW who will offer her expert guidance on the stunning vines of Germany. Exploring Etna with wild winemaker Frank Cornelissen – Wednesday 18th March (NM)
£115.00 – £130.00Price range: £115.00 through £130.00Frank Cornelissen is perhaps best known as something of a lodestar among natural wine fanatics. But to cast him purely in this mould is to downplay his significance in the wider wine world – and Italian wine in particular. Originally a wine importer in his native Belgium, Frank made a dramatic shift 25 years ago when, with no formal training, he upped sticks to move to the then sleepy scene of Sicily. There he made his first wine from a tiny plot of ungrafted vines on the slopes of Etna, a region he has since helped revitalise to the fame it enjoys today. Farming is organic, yields are low, average vine age very high (sometimes 100 years+), with many being ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines planted at altitudes of up to 1,000m. The red grape harvest, which can extend into November, is regularly the last in the Northern hemisphere. The winemaking philosophy is centred around minimal intervention – rejecting commercial yeasts, additives and oak. Since Guillaume Thienpont of Vieux Château Certan came on board as technical consultant in 2018, a small amount of sulphur is used to preserve fruit purity and let the wild volcanic terroir shine. The wines, largely made from Nerello Mascalese, are intense but precise with an astonishing marriage of freshness and depth – from the entry level bottlings to the top-production cuvées such as Magma, CS & VA, and the unorthodox, multi-vintage Munjebel. ‘Yes, Etna is in Sicily, but it is a completely different ballgame,’ says Frank. ‘We have a fragrance, a subtlety, an attention in the wines and an elegance that creates something magical. It’s an unpolished jewel and a pure, raw diamond, which we are gradually polishing.’ We’re thrilled to welcome Frank to the club to present his dazzling range of wines – we invite you to join him to uncover the evolution of Etna winemaking. The wines we’ll be tasting: 2022 Munjebel Bianco Classico, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen 2024 Susucaru Rosso, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen 2021 Munjebel Rosso Classico, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen 2018 Munjebel Rosso MC, Contrada Monte Colla, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen 2018 Munjebel Rosso CS, Contrada Zottorinoto, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen 2020 Munjebel Rosso MC, Contrada Monte Colla, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen 2020 Munjebel Rosso CS, Contrada Zottorinoto, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso P, Cuvée Perpetuum, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen 2020 Magma Rosso, Contrada Barbabecchi, Azienda Agricola Frank Cornelissen Wednesday 18th March St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. From Pessac-Léognan to Margaux via Tuscany – Haut-Bailly, Giscours & Caiarossa – Friday 13th February (NM)
£150.00 – £165.00Price range: £150.00 through £165.00There are a number of husband-and-wife winemaking teams around the world. But it’s rare that a couple should oversee two separate estates, both of global renown – and even rarer that those estates should be a pair of Bordeaux classified growths. Such is the case, however, with Véronique Sanders of Château Haut-Bailly and Alexander Van Beek of Château Giscours. We’re delighted, then, to welcome them both to the Club on a Friday in February for a tasting across both properties, spanning older vintages, large formats and more. When her grandfather sold Pessac-Léognan grand cru classé Château Haut-Bailly in 1998, Véronique Sanders was asked by the new owner to stay on and manage the estate. As President and CEO for the last quarter century or more, she oversees every stage of the wine's life, from the vines to the cellar to the commercial activity. Her undemonstrative yet rigorous, forward-thinking approach has proven perfectly suited to a property which, whether because of its relatively small production or its quintessentially classic style, has always been something of an insider’s choice. Alexander Van Beek arrived at Château Giscours in 1995 at the age of 24, for a single harvest. Three years later, he was entrusted with the management of the Margaux third growth. With roots stretching back to the 14th century, Giscours is one of the largest estates in the appellation, its 100 hectares of vines unusual in being almost entirely grouped in a single block, farmed organically within a 400-hectare agricultural landscape. Both Véronique and Alexander are prominent players across the wider region, serving on the boards of industry bodies including the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux and the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc, Graves, Barsac et Sauternes. As such they are well placed to offer a broad perspective on the state of play in Bordeaux as a whole. As an added bonus, Alexander will also present three wines from Giscours’ sister property in Tuscany, Caiarossa. Founded in 1998 and farmed biodynamically, the estate is planted to the native Sangiovese, plus Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and – unusually – Syrah, which leads the blend in its acclaimed flagship wine. The wines we will be tasting: 2018 Château Haut-Hailly, Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classé 2016 Château Haut-Hailly, Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classé 2015 Château Haut-Hailly, Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classé 2022 Château Giscours, 3ème Cru Classé, Margaux 2010 Château Giscours, 3ème Cru Classé, Margaux 1985 Château Giscours, 3ème Cru Classé, Margaux (served in double magnum) 2020 Caiarossa, IGT Toscana 2015 Caiarossa, IGT Toscana 2010 Caiarossa, IGT Toscana Friday 13th February St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. A masterclass with former Head Sommelier Terry Kandylis – Wednesday 5th November (non-member)
£145.00 – £160.00Price range: £145.00 through £160.00As part of our ten-year celebrations, we’re thrilled to be welcoming back some former favourites who have played a key role in shaping the Club’s journey over the last decade. And on Wednesday 5th November, Terry Kandylis will be returning to take us on a journey through a flight of his favourites wines, as well as a selection from his own winemaking venture. Terry was with us at the Club from its opening, latterly as Head Sommelier, before the pandemic brought a change of direction. Back in 2020, in the midst of lockdown, Terry took a trip to Ribera del Duero, where he uncovered a range of plots – often old, abandoned bush vines that were due to be uprooted. The intrepid – and somewhat incredulous – sommelier bought up the sites and set out to preserve and enhance the legacy of the gnarly old vines. Today, as well as serving as Group Head Sommelier of Noble Rot restaurants, Terry oversees a range of wines for his label Bendito Destino, or Blessed Destiny. ‘67 contributed hugely to my wine knowledge and experience and I will forever be grateful for the time I spent there and the people I met,’ says Terry. ‘I wanted to come back and host a tasting of wines that shaped me through my journey and gave me the inspiration to do what I do now.’Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe wines Terry has chosen all reflect this, often via the people behind them, starting with Jean-Marie Guffens, the Belgian maverick who single handedly put Maconnais back on the vinous map by making ‘Montrachet for normal people’. Dujac, meanwhile, is ‘the producer that made me fall in love with Burgundy’, while Tondonia is ‘Rich, textural, complex, a gastronomic wine that confirms why we should be drinking more rosé with character.’
Finally, Terry has selected a Barolo from Roagna – ‘another inspirational producer, which Luca Roagna has taken to a completely new level by looking back at history and learning from the past generations. That’s something I try to do too. “The past is the future” – that's my motto.’ We are delighted to welcome a pillar of our past back to the Club to present a selection of these favourite personal picks alongside a quartet of his own astonishing wines. The wines we will be tasting: 2020 Mâcon-Pierreclos, Tri de Chavigne, Domaine Guffens Heynen 2023 Bendito Destino, Abillo Mayor ‘Los Prados’ 2012 Viña Tondonia, Rosado 2022 Bendito Destino, Clarete, Navazal 2014 Charmes-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Domaine Dujac 2023 Bendito Destino, La Cabaña 2010 Barolo, Roagna 2022 Bendito Destino, Los Castaños Wednesday 5th November St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:30 - Masterclass endsPlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 5 business days before the event. £95.00 – £110.00Price range: £95.00 through £110.00Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageEssi Avellan MW seemingly spends her life tasting Champagne and sparkling wine – to the extent that fellow Master of Wine Tim Atkin says she ‘probably knows more about sparkling wines than anyone else on the planet’.
We’re thrilled, then, to welcome Essi back to the Club for a session on one of the subjects closest to her heart – grower Champagnes. In particular, Essi will focus on Blanc de Blancs renderings, showcasing not just the approach and character of various individual growers, but also the influence of the subregion – an element that is often overlooked when it comes to Champagne. How do wines from Montgueux differ from those from Montagne de Reims? Does the grand cru of Bouzy live up to its name? And why has the Côte des Bars become so reputed in recent years? Finland’s first Master of Wine, Essi Avellan is the author of Club Oenologique’s Champagne Report, sits on The World of Fine Wine’s tasting panels, is a panel chair at the International Wine and Spirit Competition and a jury member at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships. The author of several wine books, she has revised and extended the 3rd and 4th edition of Tom Stevenson’s award-winning Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine.
