Donnafugata Ben Ryé Masterclass – Wednesday 9th November
£95.00The Rallo family has made wine in Marsala on the island of Sicily since 1851, its ancient cellars tunnelling deep beneath the city. However, it wasn’t until 1983 that Giacomo Rallo established Donnafugata, which translates as ‘fleeing woman’ and is a reference to Queen Maria Carolina, who escaped the court of Naples in the early 19th century with her husband, Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, when Napoleon’s troops arrived, the couple ultimately taking refuge in Sicily. Six years after its birth, this iconic producer planted its first vines on Pantelleria - an island which sits closer to Africa than Sicily - and it is this secluded, wind-swept spot that is the origin of Donnafugata’s masterpiece Ben Ryé. Ben Ryé is cultivated from low bush vines bordered by lava stone walls. It is made by infusing a dry base wine with grapes which have been left to wither under the sun for up to one month. The result is of the world’s most revered sweet wines. We are delighted to be able to taste a vertical of this magical nectar with Gabriele Gorelli MW, alongside José Rallo, owner and CEO of Donnafugata. We hope you join us for an evening of unforgettable wine… The wines we will be tasting: 2020 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2017 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2015 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2013 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2011 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2006 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria Wednesday 9th November St. James’s Room 18:30 – Glass on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. The origin is the destination IWA Sake
£60.00Recently introduced in the UK, IWA Sake is the creation of Richard Geoffroy who charted the course of the legendary Dom Pérignon Champagne for 28 years as the fifth Chef de Cave. We are joined by Richard for a distinctive evening exploring his natural change from Champagne to Sake, using his blending (or assemblage) skills. We will taste IWA Sake 5, and discover how in order to craft Sake, rice has to be polished, washed, soaked, steamed, cooled, inverted, mashed, fermented and pressed. When making IWA 5, there isn’t a standard recipe, but rather a scientific experimentation that changes every year. The aim with IWA 5 is to create an internationally renowned Sake, while still staying true to Japanese tradition and methods. Strongly and proudly anchored in its home country, IWA is made at the site of Shiraiwa in Tateyama - at the foot-steps of holly Mount Tate, Toyama Prefecture ( West Japan ) - Highly respectful of the traditional brewing methods, Richard Geoffroy is bringing a ground breaking approach into age old Sake making. We hope to see you there... The sakes we will taste are: IWA 5 Assemblage 1 IWA 5 Assemblage 2 Wednesday 16th March 2022 St James’s Room 18.30 – Welcome drink on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass starts 20:30 – Masterclass endsAdd to cart -
Live From the Vines: Boekenhoutskloof Winery
Hosted by Ronan Sayburn MS Although established in 1776, the modern-day tale of Boekenhoutskloof began in 1993 when the farm acquired new owners who embarked on a head-to-toe refurbishment. This included not only a finely tuned vineyard planting programme, but also the (ongoing) acquisition of 2,500-litre foudres made from Austrian oak and numbered in the same ‘Platform 9 & ¾’ font à la Harry Potter. Technical director Marc Kent joins Ronan Sayburn MS to discuss the story of Boekenhoutskloof and sample a selection of wines which are available as a tasting kit to digital members. It’s a tantalising line-up which includes the much-adored The Chocolate Block as well Porseleinberg - Kent’s new premium Syrah project which already stands as one of South Africa’s most highly regarded takes on the grape. Live from the Vines: La Rioja Alta
Hosted by Sarah Jane Evans MW, Guillermo de Aranzabal & Julio Sáenz Founded towards the tail-end of the 19th century, La Rioja Alta has for generations proved itself as one of Rioja’s standard bearers, famous not only for its classically sculpted wines and the extended ageing they undertake, but also its on-site cooperage which at any given time is home to around 30,000 barrels. Live from the Vines: Eyrie Vineyards
£90.00Hosted by Jason Lett & Chevonne Ball ‘I cannot help but feel now that success will be ours,’ reads a 1965 journal entry by The Eyrie Vineyards’ founder, David Lett. Lett’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plantings represented a first for Willamette Valley, so success was by no means assured, yet both varieties are now synonymous with the region. David and his wife Diana were also the first to commercially plant Pinot Gris outside of Europe, and it’s this pioneering spirit which their son Jason preserves to this day, as evinced by a head-turning bottling of pure Pinot Meunier. Hosted by US sommelier and expert Chevonne Ball, Jason discusses his hands-off winemaking approach which incorporates natural fermentation with wild yeasts, skin contact for the whites, and barely a trace of new oak in the cellar, as demonstrated by the presence of a dozen barrels bought almost 50 years ago and which are still going strong. Live from the Vines: The Blank Bottle Winery
Hosted by Pieter Walser & Ronan Sayburn MS To understand the philosophy behind Blank Bottle Winery we trace its roots back to owner and winemaker Pieter Walser’s first customer. A woman visited his office 12 years ago, saying that she wanted to buy some wine, and that she liked everything apart from Shiraz. She then tasted some wine, loved it, and bought three cases. It was Shiraz. We join Pieter to understand more about why he says he wants nothing on his labels about the grape variety. The Expert Series: Germany | Riesling
Hosted by Anne Krebiehl MW Germany was always considered to be one of the finest wine-producing countries in the world, with Riesling prices similar to those of first growth Bordeaux in the early 1900’s. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, German wines fell out of fashion mainly due to the pursuit of higher yields. However, this wine producing nation had made a comeback and seeks to retake its position at the top table of fine wine production. Join Anne Krebiehl MW who will offer her expert guidance on the stunning vines of Germany. Battle of the Clones with Jimmy Smith – Thursday 31st July
£75.00 – £90.00We all know that the vagaries of terroir mean Chardonnay grown in Burgundy will taste very different from Chardonnay grown in California. But even within the same vineyard, the planting of varying clones means the same grape variety can yield very different characteristics. Chardonnay grown around the world is genetically identical, but develops clonal variations according to the local terroir. These mutations can alter the physiology of the vine, creating differing foliage types, grape cluster/berry sizes, skin-juice ratio, sugar/acid/tannin levels, colour etc etc. It is these variations that lend individual clones their character, which shines through in the eventual wine – leading wine geeks to get very excited about wines made from the Gingin or Pommard clones, for example. We are delighted, then, to welcome founder of the West London Wine School Jimmy Smith to make sense of all this in his signature accessible, inclusive and entertaining style. With fellow educator and winemaker Sam Hill, he will explain how clones work and why they’re important, all by way of live examples in the form of the debut release of clonal wines from their Surrey Hills winery, Beare Green. Jimmy and Sam have meticulously researched the impact of clonal selection of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to produce a range of exceptionally high-quality wines. Working with some of the UK's top growers across the South of England, the winery crafts small-batch wines which, beyond the all-important clonal selection, harness natural yeast fermentation and minimal intervention amid a range of other winemaking innovations. All will be revealed on the night – so join us to tune in and geek out (in a very non-geeky way). The wines we will be tasting: 2023 Dio Bacchus, Surrey Hills (glass on arrival) 2023 Chardonnay, Thakeham Vineyard (Clone 121), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 95), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 96), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Clonal Blend, West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 777), West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 114), West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Clonal Blend, West Sussex Thursday 31st July St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome Drink 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. Essi Avellan MW showcases her top grower Champagnes – Thursday 8th May (Non-member)
£95.00 – £110.00Essi Avellan MW seemingly spends her life tasting Champagne and sparkling wine – to the extent that fellow Master of Wine Tim Atkin says she ‘probably knows more about sparkling wines than anyone else on the planet’.
We’re thrilled, then, to welcome Essi back to the Club for a session on one of the subjects closest to her heart – grower Champagnes. In particular, Essi will focus on Blanc de Blancs renderings, showcasing not just the approach and character of various individual growers, but also the influence of the subregion – an element that is often overlooked when it comes to Champagne. How do wines from Montgueux differ from those from Montagne de Reims? Does the grand cru of Bouzy live up to its name? And why has the Côte des Bars become so reputed in recent years? Finland’s first Master of Wine, Essi Avellan is the author of Club Oenologique’s Champagne Report, sits on The World of Fine Wine’s tasting panels, is a panel chair at the International Wine and Spirit Competition and a jury member at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships. The author of several wine books, she has revised and extended the 3rd and 4th edition of Tom Stevenson’s award-winning Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine. We encourage you to join her for what should be an enlightening evening – one in which we can guarantee you’ll learn something (as well as taste some fantastic fizz…) The wines we will be tasting: NV Domaine Alexandre Bonnet, Blanc de Blancs, Extra Brut (Côte des Bar) NV Jacques Lassaigne, Les Vignes de Montgueux, (Montgueux) 2015 Huré Frerès 4 Elements Chardonnay (Montagne de Reims) 2019 Pierre Paillard, Les Mottelettes, Bouzy Grand Cru (Montagne de Reims) NV Henriet-Bazin, Blanc de Blancs, Extra Brut (Montagne de Reims) NV Dhondt-Grellet, Cramant Grand Cru, Blanc de Blancs (Côte des Blancs) 2016 Larmandier-Bernier, Terre de Vertus (Côte des Blancs) Barrat Masson, Les Margannes, (Côte de Sézanne) (vintage TBC) Thursday 8th May St. James’s Room 18:30 – Welcome reception 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass ends Please note that we now offer a tasting board of charcuterie, cheese, olives and smoked crispy chickpeas to accompany your tasting.
