Deep Dive Bordeaux: Pessac-Léognan
Hosted by Jane Anson The soils of Pessac-Léognan – awash with sand and gravel – arguably provided the genesis of what is today the world’s most celebrated and marketable region: Bordeaux. In 1305, the man who was to become Pope Pape Clément V planted the first vineyard on the estate now known as Château Pape Clément, while in the mid-17th century, the then owners of Château Haut Brion - the only non-Médoc classed growth and where grapes have been cultivated since Roman times – opened an eponymous tavern in London (the Pontac’s Head) as a means of promoting and selling its wines. This is an extraordinary opportunity to taste from these two historic properties as well as four of its esteemed peers. Lead by Bordeaux specialist Jane Anson, this tour of Pessac examines its history, climate and terroir which have coalesced to create not only phenomenal red wines but superlative whites as well. Jasper on Vintage: 2017 – Red
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Mother Nature takes Burgundy’s vignerons on a white-knuckle ride at the best of times, and in 2016 she was in full flow, with frost driving down yields and leading to an army of jittery winemakers the following year, not least as it appeared 2017 was heading in the same direction. Fortunately, the vintage altered course and the wines of 2017 have been widely lauded, and while it’s the whites which have largely taken the glory, an abundance of terroir-driven, light on their feet and engaging reds have emerged from the year. Bringing his reservoirs of wisdom and expertise to bear, Jasper Morris MW marks your card for this fabulous vintage, adding flesh to the headlines and zeroing in on the appellations to note, proving once again he is your first port of call before any cellars are stocked. By Heart Memory workshop with Anna Barham – Wednesday 8th March
£60.00Continuing our series of art-led cultural events, we are delighted to welcome back artist Anna Barham for another experimental writing workshop. Anna will take Members on a journey through the different strategies of experimental writing which inform her practice. The workshop will focus on the concept of learning something 'by heart'. Think of song lyrics or phone numbers and how once learnt, they seem to be etched inside you, like your name. For a variety of reasons, from the rise of smartphones to changes in educational methods, learning ‘by heart’ can seem somewhat old hat, however, during the workshop, we will consider how the slow and repetitive practice of committing a text to memory can, in fact, open up new ways of reading and thinking. Anna Barham is a London-based artist working between video, sound, print, installation, and performance. Her practice considers language as it moves between different material forms, technologies, and bodies. Her work is in public collections including Tate, V&A, Government Art Collection, MIMA, SFMoMA & CGAC. Anna is currently a practice-based PhD candidate at Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. Wednesday 8th March St. James’s Room 18:30 to 20:30 - Champagne and canapés will be servedRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. Cancellations must be made in writing to [email protected]. Any cancellations within 48 hours of the event are non-refundable unless 67 Pall Mall resells the ticket to another Member. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Saint-Julien
Hosted by Jane Anson Continuing her exploration of Bordeaux’s headline appellations, we find Jane Anson, author of Inside Bordeaux, among the vines of Saint-Julien. This may be the smallest of the Médoc’s heavy-hitting communes, but it’s one which punches above its weight, with more than three quarters of its vineyards being classed-growth terroir. Through the lens of the legendary 2010 vintage, Anson reflects on the history, soil, location and most celebrated names of Saint-Julien, concluding with her selection of vintage standouts which are available as a tasting kit to digital members. The wines that we will taste: Château Gloria, Saint Julien, 2010 Château Lagrange, Saint-Julien 2010 Château Talbot, Quatrième Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2010 Château Beychevelle, Quatrième Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2010 Château Langoa-Barton, Troisième Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2010 Château Leoville Poyferre, Saint-Julien 2010Read more -

Jasper on Vintage: 2015 – Red
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW 2015 ranks as one of Burgundy’s preeminent red vintages of recent times, with more than a smattering of stardust to be found along the region’s Route des Grand Crus. Yet, despite the lauded nature of the year, the empirical observations of Jasper Morris MW are no less crucial. In this episode, Morris delivers his verdict on 2015, cherry-picking a handful of wines from key appellations to make his case, while reviewing the vintage’s talking points, explain what to look out for, and how much staying power you can expect from this celebrated year. Jasper on Vintage: 2017 – White
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Despite early, ominous signs of a frost-hit rerun of 2016 - and the mass burning of hay bales to avoid just that - 2017 dramatically changed course to become one of white Burgundy’s stars of the last decade. Making full use of his ample knowledge and far-reaching connections, Jasper Morris MW delivers his evaluation of the year, digging around amongst the minutiae of the vintage, and casting his eye over the producers and appellations who thrived against the odds, not least Chablis which, while still badly bruised by a wave of frost, delivered one of the standout successes of an already lauded year. Live from the Vines: Domaine Ponsot
Hosted by Alexandre Abel & Jasper Morris MW Integrity courses through Ponsot, be that in its approach in the vineyard, or the relationship it enjoys with its many adorers. Regards the former, the Ponsot practice more than dips into both organic and biodynamic viticulture (although Ponsot eschews these tags). As to the latter, if it feels the wines are not up to scratch then Ponsot will reduce the price, as was the case for virtually the entire 1994 vintage. Alternatively, as Ponsot says, ‘we send it to the distillery, as we did for the Morey Clos des Monts Luisants 1993 and 2012.’ Master of Wine Jasper Morris visits this beacon of Burgundy, discussing Ponsot’s at-times controversial ethos with its chief winemaker Alexandre Abel and the family’s fifth-generation winegrower William Ponsot. It is an engrossing insight into the inner workings of an unflinchingly exacting property, culminating in a spectacular, multi-vintage tasting of its sublime Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which is also available to our digital members as a tasting kit. Domaine Ponsot, Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2017 Domaine Ponsot, Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2013 Domaine Ponsot, Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2010 Domaine Ponsot, Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2006 Domaine Ponsot, Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2001 Domaine Ponsot, Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 1999Read more -

Jasper on Terroir: The Charm of Burgundy
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW & Dominique Lafon One of the wonderful features of Burgundy is the multiplicity of place names, many of which feature in several different appellations. Theoretically there is a reason behind each name. In this tasting we take a look at the magical name of Charmes which can be found at village, premier cru and grand cru level. Is there a thread which links the Charmes vineyards in different villages? Join Jasper in the first edition of this series exploring the multi-faceted subject of terroir, to find out where the name came from and how they all link up. Intimate dinner with Jasmine Hirsch of California’s pioneering Hirsch Vineyards – Monday 20th April
£225.00When David Hirsch bought a remote sheep ranch on the Sonoma Coast in 1978, it wasn’t with the intention of making wine. A college dropout in New York, he’d moved west to pursue a career in women’s fashion that took him on regular trips to France where he cultivated a love of Burgundy. Even after planting vines two years later, for the next two decades, David concentrated on farming the soils, selling his grapes to the likes of Littorai, Kistler and Williams Selyem, all of which made Hirsch-designated wines. It was only in 2002, fascinated by the different nuances of his 60 different plots spread across his 72 acres, that he began making his own wines. A decade later, after years working closely with Californian trailblazer Ted Lemon of Littorai, he was farming the whole lot biodynamically, and the wines began garnering serious critical attention. Having returned to the estate in 2008 following a career in finance, David’s daughter Jasmine took over as general manager in 2015, after her father suffered a serious tractor accident. For the last seven years, she has also been its winemaker, producing a range of often small-production, single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that represent the variety of soils, aspects and microclimates here in one of California's smallest AVAs, Fort Ross-Seaview, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We are delighted to welcome Jasmine to the Club to present a selection of these refined, sophisticated wines over a small dinner for 12 Members in the Lutyens Room. 2024 Burgundy with maverick micro-negociant Philippe Pacalet – Wednesday 11th February (Non-Member)
£125.00 – £140.00Price range: £125.00 through £140.00Few names evoke the same level of devotion among Burgundy lovers as Philippe Pacalet. A master of transparency, Philippe has, over the last two decades, carved out something of a cult following as one of the most inventive of Burgundy’s new wave of micro-négociants via a range of high-precision, low-intervention wines. Former estate manager at Domaine Prieuré-Roch, Pacalet set out on his own in 2001, quickly making a name for himself via a model that sees him partnering with various organic and biodynamic growers to make a range of wines at his small-scale winery. There, Pacalet follows a minimal-intervention approach via whole-bunch fermentation, ageing in old oak, natural yeasts, and minimal use of sulphur. The resultant wines, spanning a variety of communes, are characterised by energy and intensity, their captivating aromatics and seductive freshness harnessing a certain ‘funky’ purity. Having joined the family estate in 2019, Philippe’s son Réno is now carving his own path, launching a separate range late last year. With their importer Wine Source, we are thrilled to welcome both Philippe and Réno to the Club to tell us more about their respective approaches. We will taste a range of wines from the nascent 2024 vintage – a year defined by historically low yields but fine aromatic clarity and saline precision – as well as a trio of evolving vintages. This is a rare opportunity to explore how a shared winemaking philosophy of indigenous yeasts and strict terroir expression manifests across wines made by two generations. Do join us for what should be a fascinating evening. The wines we will be tasting: 2024 Maranges Blanc, Reno Pacalet 2024 Auxey-Duresses Blanc, Reno Pacalet 2024 Auxey-Duresses Rouge, Reno Pacalet 2024 Beaune Les Beaux Fougets, Cuvée Aria Rouge, Reno Pacalet 2024 Ladoix Blanc, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Meursault, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Gevrey Chambertin, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Pommard, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Nuits-St-Georges, 1er cru Aux Argillas, Philippe Pacalet 2023 Maranges, 1er cru La Fussière, Reno Pacalet 2021 Nuits-St-Georges, 1er Cru Aux Argillas, Philippe Pacalet 2020 Gevrey Chambertin, 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, Philippe Pacalet Wednesday 11th February St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. An exclusive invitation to taste the world’s oldest single malt Scotch whisky – Wednesday 24th September
£0.00Earlier this year, Gordon & MacPhail announced the release of the world’s oldest single malt Scotch whisky – Gordon & MacPhail 85 Years Old from Glenlivet Distillery, due for release in October. We are delighted, then, to invite a select group of whisky-loving Members to sample this liquid, and to taste a drop of liquid history. For more than 130 years, over four generations of family ownership, independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail has matched its own specially selected casks with spirit from over 100 Scottish distilleries. It was on 3rd February, 1940, in a quiet corner of the north-east of Scotland, that George Urquhart and his father, John, decided to lay down spirit from Glenlivet Distillery in a Gordon & MacPhail American oak cask to be enjoyed after their lifetime. During wartime, whisky production was curtailed due to rationing and lack of manpower, with the vast majority of malt whisky destined for the blends that dominated the market. Gordon and MacPhail was unusual in earmarking casks to be bottled in their own right as single malts. Only when the whisky was deemed ready would Cask 336 be shared. That time ended up being 85 years later – longer than any other single malt Scotch whisky in history – when the decision was taken to finally empty the cask and a total of 125 decanters of the 85 years old whisky were bottled – ‘not because it’s very old,’ says 4th generation family member Stephen Rankin, ‘but because of the quality’. Stephen will be our host to guide Members through not only the Gordon & MacPhail 85 Years Old from Glenlivet Distillery, but three other rare single malts from Gordon & MacPhail’s Rare Spirit Liquid Library. Please note that, while this is a complimentary event, it is limited to 24 attendees, and we have extended the initial invitation only to a select group of the Club’s Membership. We would ask, therefore, that if you sign up to the event and are then unable to attend, you let us know as soon as possible, so that we can offer your place to another Member. £115.00 – £130.00Price range: £115.00 through £130.00It is widely recognised that the Master Sommelier (MS) and Master of Wine (MW) qualifications represent the pinnacles of service and academic achievement in the wine world. The challenge of the blind tasting elements of the examinations alone is enough to send most of us into a cold sweat… There are 416 Masters of Wine dotted around the world, and 269 Master Sommeliers. And here at 67 Pall Mall, we are fortunate to work with several of them. In November, we will welcome the return of Club Member and friend, Richard Bampfield MW, alongside our Head of Wine for Europe, Kathrine Larsen-Robert MS, for a rescheduled follow-up to their much-loved event from earlier this year. This time, the pair will explore their different approaches to tasting, their motivations for pursuing their qualifications, and the work involved in the two different programmes. Both Kathrine and Richard have selected wines that have been an influence on their initial love for the subject and their subsequent careers – blind tastings are likely to feature! Join is for an informative but informal insight into the minds of an MW and an MS, and put your palate to the taste alongside the professionals… The wines we will be tasting: 2014 Fleur de Passion, Blanc de Blancs, Diebolt-Vallois, Champagne 2013 Dom Pérignon, Brut, Champagne 2019 Savennières, Les Genêts, Damien Laureau, Loire Valley 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, Phenomena, Castello di Argiano (Sesti) 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Pégau, Rhône Valley 2009 Chateau Beychevelle, St-Julien, Bordeaux 2022 Orange Muscat & Flora, Brown Brothers, Victoria, Australia Thursday 27th November St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants.
