Lunch with St-Emilion star Beau-Séjour Bécot – Tuesday 23rd September
£150.00Join us for a rescheduled edition of our special wine lunch as we warmly welcome Julien Barthe, owner of St-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé Beau-Séjour, to the Club.
After train strikes prevented him from joining us previously, we are delighted that Julien can now share the story of this historic estate, offering Members an insight into the winemaking philosophy behind one of St-Émilion’s most celebrated châteaux. The Bécot family has owned Beau-Séjour Bécot since 1969, after which it endured a somewhat turbulent existence for several decades, losing and regaining its 1er Grand Cru Classé status. Not so long ago, in the Parker era, the wines were somewhat turbo-charged. Under third-generation Juliette Bécot and her husband Julien’s guidance, however, and with the increasingly in-demand Thomas Duclos taking over from consultant Michel Rolland, there has been a major stylistic turnaround. Julien’s arrival in 2016 kickstarted a mission to showcase the property’s outstanding terroir atop St-Emilion’s limestone plateau more vividly in the bottle. This has meant extensive work in the vineyard (including new plantings of Cabernet Franc) and a similar overhaul in the cellar, via ultra-light extraction, and cutting back the use of new oak in favour of larger cask and amphoras. The resultant elegant, balanced wines are all the better, of course, for lunchtime sipping. So in an era when they say the days of the long lunch are over, here’s your chance to prove them wrong… The menu: Starter: Loomswood Farm duck, served with hazelnut and frisée Main course: Herb-crusted lamb rack, potato dauphinoise Dessert: A selection of English and French cheese The wines we’ll be drinking: 2019 Château Joanin Bécot, Côtes de Castillon 2021 Beau-Séjour Bécot, St-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé B 2018 Beau-Séjour Bécot, St-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé B 2015 Beau-Séjour Bécot, St-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé B 2010 Beau-Séjour Bécot, St-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé B Tuesday 23rd September St James’s Room 12:30 – Welcome reception 13:00 – Lunch begins 15:00 - Lunch endsPlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 5 days before the event. Napa icon Opus One going back to 1990 – Tuesday 14th October (Non-Member)
£550.00 – £565.00Price range: £550.00 through £565.00Few wines in recent history have generated such headlines as Opus One did when the inaugural vintage was released in 1980. Founded two years previously, the venture was a groundbreaking collaboration between two titans of the wine world: Baron Philippe de Rothschild, proprietor of Château Mouton-Rothschild, and Robert Mondavi, the pioneer of modern Californian wine. While today, cross-country collaborations are more common, in 1980, such an initiative was almost unheard of – and marked an astonishing leap of faith by the Bordeaux first growth. The pair’s shared vision was to create a single, ultra-premium wine that would marry the finesse and tradition of Bordeaux with the ripeness and energy of California fruit. That fruit was sourced from Bordeaux varieties among Mondavi’s holdings in the famous To Kalon vineyard, along with other top Napa Valley sites, while the famous winery was sited conspicuously just off the famous Highway 29, in the heart of the region’s prime Cabernet Sauvignon territory. Opus One’s philosophy has remained consistent ever since – to produce a single flagship Bordeaux blend each vintage, aged extensively in French oak and designed for both early approachability and long-term cellaring. We are thrilled to welcome Opus One CEO Christopher Lynch to the Club for an eight-vintage vertical tasting of this storied wine, including three vintages from the 1990s, each served in Imperial (6-litre) format. These Imperials have been held in our reserves since 2018, sourced directly from California for an occasion as special as this. Join us for what promises to be a very special evening, as we continue our line-up of headline-making events to mark our 10th anniversary. The wines of Georgia with Sarah Abbott MW – Thursday 24th July
£85.00 – £100.00Price range: £85.00 through £100.00Over the last decade or so, the wines of Georgia have enjoyed a dizzying rise to prominence. This cradle of wine has captured the imagination of sommeliers, critics and consumers alike via hugely characterful wines, often made via a unique method. In July, we’ll be taking a deep dive into this thrilling revival, covering the UNESCO-heritage qvevri winemaking, dramatic mountain terroirs and a Jurassic world of utterly unique varieties (hats off to anyone familiar with the Rkatsiteli or Tsolikouri grape varieties…). The wines on show – all medal-winners at various competitions – showcase the full breadth of Georgia’s range, from elegant sparkling to richly textural amber wines and bold, structured reds. The majority are aged in the signature qveri. The country’s traditional method of fermenting grapes in egg-shaped qveri is recognised by UNESCO, as part of the wonderfully named ‘Intangible Heritage of Humanity’ on the body’s World Heritage list. Archaeological evidence of the use of these large earthenware vessels, which are typically buried in the floor of the cellar, or marani – a semi-sacred place to most Georgians and found in almost every house – goes back 8,000 years. Join renowned Georgian wine specialist Sarah Abbott MW for an exhilarating exploration of one of the world’s oldest and most dynamic wine cultures. The wines we will be tasting: 2022 Pét-Nàt Rosé, Mtsvane Estate, Kakheti 2022, Manavi Barrel, Giuaani, Kakheti (white) 2020 Tsolikouri, Labara, Imereti (amber) 2022 Khikhvi, 39 Qvevri, Kakheti (amber) 2022 Mtsvane, Kardanakhi 1888, Kakheti (amber) 2021 Ikano Estate Mtsvane, Ikano Estate Friends Cellar, Kakheti (amber) 2022 Rkatsiteli Qvevri, Lento Winery, Kakheti (amber) 2018 Kisi, Mildiani Family Winery, Kakheti (amber) 2022 Saperavi, Qvevri Wine Cellar of Ivane Nareklishvili, Kakheti (red) 2019 Mukuzani, Chelti, Kakheti (red) 1987 Saamo, Kardenakhi 7, Kakheti (sweet fortified) St James's Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. Donnafugata Ben Ryé Masterclass – Wednesday 9th November
£95.00The Rallo family has made wine in Marsala on the island of Sicily since 1851, its ancient cellars tunnelling deep beneath the city. However, it wasn’t until 1983 that Giacomo Rallo established Donnafugata, which translates as ‘fleeing woman’ and is a reference to Queen Maria Carolina, who escaped the court of Naples in the early 19th century with her husband, Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, when Napoleon’s troops arrived, the couple ultimately taking refuge in Sicily. Six years after its birth, this iconic producer planted its first vines on Pantelleria - an island which sits closer to Africa than Sicily - and it is this secluded, wind-swept spot that is the origin of Donnafugata’s masterpiece Ben Ryé. Ben Ryé is cultivated from low bush vines bordered by lava stone walls. It is made by infusing a dry base wine with grapes which have been left to wither under the sun for up to one month. The result is of the world’s most revered sweet wines. We are delighted to be able to taste a vertical of this magical nectar with Gabriele Gorelli MW, alongside José Rallo, owner and CEO of Donnafugata. We hope you join us for an evening of unforgettable wine… The wines we will be tasting: 2020 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2017 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2015 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2013 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2011 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2006 Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria Wednesday 9th November St. James’s Room 18:30 – Glass on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. The origin is the destination IWA Sake
£60.00Recently introduced in the UK, IWA Sake is the creation of Richard Geoffroy who charted the course of the legendary Dom Pérignon Champagne for 28 years as the fifth Chef de Cave. We are joined by Richard for a distinctive evening exploring his natural change from Champagne to Sake, using his blending (or assemblage) skills. We will taste IWA Sake 5, and discover how in order to craft Sake, rice has to be polished, washed, soaked, steamed, cooled, inverted, mashed, fermented and pressed. When making IWA 5, there isn’t a standard recipe, but rather a scientific experimentation that changes every year. The aim with IWA 5 is to create an internationally renowned Sake, while still staying true to Japanese tradition and methods. Strongly and proudly anchored in its home country, IWA is made at the site of Shiraiwa in Tateyama - at the foot-steps of holly Mount Tate, Toyama Prefecture ( West Japan ) - Highly respectful of the traditional brewing methods, Richard Geoffroy is bringing a ground breaking approach into age old Sake making. We hope to see you there... Live From the Vines: Boekenhoutskloof Winery
Hosted by Ronan Sayburn MS Although established in 1776, the modern-day tale of Boekenhoutskloof began in 1993 when the farm acquired new owners who embarked on a head-to-toe refurbishment. This included not only a finely tuned vineyard planting programme, but also the (ongoing) acquisition of 2,500-litre foudres made from Austrian oak and numbered in the same ‘Platform 9 & ¾’ font à la Harry Potter. Technical director Marc Kent joins Ronan Sayburn MS to discuss the story of Boekenhoutskloof and sample a selection of wines which are available as a tasting kit to digital members. It’s a tantalising line-up which includes the much-adored The Chocolate Block as well Porseleinberg - Kent’s new premium Syrah project which already stands as one of South Africa’s most highly regarded takes on the grape.
