Exton Park Sea-Aged English Sparkling Wine Tasting
£80.00Join us in the St. James's Room for a tasting which will provide a rare preview of “60 Below” – the first ever sea-aged English sparkling wine, alongside it’s traditionally aged sister wine, “60 Above”. Both wines are 2014 Blanc de Blancs vintages from Exton Park’s single vineyard, with one vital difference. Each have been aged in two different locations spanning 60m below and 60m above sea level, in a first for English winemaking innovation. Exton Park's Head Winemaker Corinne Seely will also present a very special vintage in honour of the vineyard’s iconic founder, Malcolm Isaac. The Malcolm Isaac Blanc de Blancs 2011, launching with a very limited volume in March 2022, was Corinne’s first wine created for Exton Park and has had 7 years on lees and 2 years under cork. Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to sample one of the English wine industry’s oldest vintages available to buy in 2022. We will be joined by special guest Denis Drouin from Amphoris 'Underwater Cellar', who work to immerse bottles in selected sites at sea in specially designed racks over 60m deep in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Surely a tasting not to miss. Live from the Vines: Jim Barry Wines
Hosted by Sam Barry & Ronan Sayburn MS A shade over half a century ago, Jim Barry was getting his hands dirty by digging in his first Clare Valley vines. The 50 years since have seen successive members of the Barry clan judiciously build on their patriarch’s endeavours, and today the family name is synonymous with Australian fine wine. Joining Ronan Sayburn MS for this masterclass is Jim’s son, Peter, who discusses the Barry story, including tales such as hauling buckets of water into the vineyards with his brothers during droughts, as well as contemporary challenges such as climate change. Also hear from the third generation, with commercial manager, Sam, and winemaker, Tom, as they reveal the projects and collaborations that keep Jim Barry wines perpetually at the vanguard, and the family’s enduring love affair with Riesling. Experimental writing workshop with Anna Barham – Wednesday 11th January
£60.00Continuing our series of art-led cultural events, we are delighted to announce an evening celebrating a refresh of the artwork in the St. James's Room, with artist Anna Barham. To mark the beginning of the exhibition, Anna will introduce our Members to her work, and take us on a journey through the different strategies of experimental writing which inform her practice. These strategies ruminate around the concept of learning something 'by heart'. Think of song lyrics or phone numbers and how once learnt, they seem to be etched inside you, like your name. For a variety of reasons, from the rise of smartphones to changes in educational methods, learning ‘by heart’ can seem somewhat old hat, however, during Anna’s talk, we will consider how the slow and repetitive practice of committing a text to memory can, in fact, open up new ways of reading and thinking. Anna Barham is a London-based artist working between video, sound, print, installation, and performance. Her practice considers language as it moves between different material forms, technologies, and bodies. Her work is in public collections including Tate, V&A, Government Art Collection, MIMA, SFMoMA & CGAC. Anna is currently a practice-based PhD candidate at Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. Wednesday 11th January St. James’s Room 18:30 to 20:30 - Champagne and canapés will be servedAdd to cartPlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. Cancellations must be made in writing to [email protected]. Any cancellations within 48 hours of the event are non-refundable unless 67 Pall Mall resells the ticket to another Member. Live From the Vines: Klein Constantia
Hosted by Hans Aström, Matt Day & Demetri Walters MW Klein Constantia has gone through many iterations since its genesis in 1685, but having seen itself referenced in works by both Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, this land has rarely been far away from centre stage. In addition to touching on its occasionally turbulent past, Demetri Walters MW delves into the soils and cellars of Klein Constantia with its managing director Hans Aström and winemaker Matt Day. Particular attention is paid to the legendary sweet wine, Vin de Constance, which was revived by the estate, has been instrumental in forging its reputation and marks the finale to the accompanying set of fabulous wines available to our digital members. Live From the Vines: Álvaro Palacios – Bierzo
Hosted by Ricardo Perez Palacios & Ronan Sayburn MS Descendientes de J. Palacios is the work of two men: the esteemed Alvaro Palacios (who in the early 1990s lit up the wine world with his Priorat wines, most notably L’Ermita and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios. The pair joined forces towards the end of that same decade, launching Descendientes de J. Palacios in the then-obscure region of Bierzo in northeast Spain. Now a poorly guarded secret, Bierzo seems to have it all: old vines; a monastic winemaking heritage; poor soils on teeth-clenchingly steep slopes, and a relatively unheard of grape variety (Mencia) perfectly acclimatised to its surroundings Ronan Sayburn MS and Ricardo Pérez Palacios discuss the allure of Bierzo and the Mencia grape, and how this is realised in a portfolio of wines which is among the most desired in Spain and includes the majestic, prized Moncerbal. Live from the Vines: The Mazzei Family – Siepi
£150.00Hosted by Filippo Mazzei, Francesco Mazzei, Giovanni Mazzei & Gionata Pulignani It has been defined as one of the wines that changed Italy’s wine style, and no one would deny that it should find an honoured place in the cellar of those who appreciate terroir wines. The dream of Lapo Mazzei, Siepi was established in 1992 as a distillation into wine of the breath-taking beauty of this 6-hectares vineyard in Castellina in Chianti and of its distinctive characteristics, beginning with its climate and soils. Add to that a painstakingly-respectful viticulture aimed at protecting the local microbiome and the result is the precious cuvée of Sangiovese and Merlot Siepi by Castello di Fonterutoli, now guided by Lapo Mazzei’s sons Filippo and Francesco and his grandson Giovanni. Jasper on Terroir: Tour de Beaune
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW The terroir finding itself under the forensic gaze of Burgundy expert Jasper Morris MW is the relatively sizeable Beaune premier cru. While these forgivingly sloped vineyards hold no grand cru plots, what you will find are parcels owned by some of Burgundy’s most famed producers, and - should you know where to look - a well of keenly priced and rewarding wines. Navigating the ground and gradients, Morris points out his favoured sites, revealing the tales behind them as well as their temperaments, before heading inside to sample the handiwork of prestigious names including Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Faiveley and Bouchard Père & Fils. These wines are also available to our digital members as a tasting kit; an unmissable opportunity to taste the hand-picked selection of one of Burgundy’s foremost experts. Domaine Tollot-Beaut et Fils, Beaune Premier Cru, Clos du Roi 2015 Domaine des Croix, Beaune Premier Cru, Les Bressandes 2016 (Please note that due to availability, a different vintage is being tasted in the episode than what is included in the wine kit) Domaine Faiveley, Beaune Premier Cru, Clos de L’Écu 2014 Joseph Drouhin, Beaune Premier Cru, Clos des Mouches Rouge 2010 Bouchard Père & Fils, Vignes de L’Enfant Jésus, Beaune Premier Cru, Les Grèves 2009 Domaine Louis Jadot, Beaune Premier Cru, Clos des Ursules 2002Read more
