Jasper on Vintage: 2017 – White
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Despite early, ominous signs of a frost-hit rerun of 2016 - and the mass burning of hay bales to avoid just that - 2017 dramatically changed course to become one of white Burgundy’s stars of the last decade. Making full use of his ample knowledge and far-reaching connections, Jasper Morris MW delivers his evaluation of the year, digging around amongst the minutiae of the vintage, and casting his eye over the producers and appellations who thrived against the odds, not least Chablis which, while still badly bruised by a wave of frost, delivered one of the standout successes of an already lauded year. Live from the Vines: Domaine Ponsot
Hosted by Alexandre Abel & Jasper Morris MW Integrity courses through Ponsot, be that in its approach in the vineyard, or the relationship it enjoys with its many adorers. Regards the former, the Ponsot practice more than dips into both organic and biodynamic viticulture (although Ponsot eschews these tags). As to the latter, if it feels the wines are not up to scratch then Ponsot will reduce the price, as was the case for virtually the entire 1994 vintage. Alternatively, as Ponsot says, ‘we send it to the distillery, as we did for the Morey Clos des Monts Luisants 1993 and 2012.’ Master of Wine Jasper Morris visits this beacon of Burgundy, discussing Ponsot’s at-times controversial ethos with its chief winemaker Alexandre Abel and the family’s fifth-generation winegrower William Ponsot. It is an engrossing insight into the inner workings of an unflinchingly exacting property, culminating in a spectacular, multi-vintage tasting of its sublime Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which is also available to our digital members as a tasting kit. Jasper on Terroir: The Charm of Burgundy
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW & Dominique Lafon One of the wonderful features of Burgundy is the multiplicity of place names, many of which feature in several different appellations. Theoretically there is a reason behind each name. In this tasting we take a look at the magical name of Charmes which can be found at village, premier cru and grand cru level. Is there a thread which links the Charmes vineyards in different villages? Join Jasper in the first edition of this series exploring the multi-faceted subject of terroir, to find out where the name came from and how they all link up. 2024 Burgundy with maverick micro-negociant Philippe Pacalet – Wednesday 11th February (Non-Member)
£125.00 – £140.00Price range: £125.00 through £140.00Few names evoke the same level of devotion among Burgundy lovers as Philippe Pacalet. A master of transparency, Philippe has, over the last two decades, carved out something of a cult following as one of the most inventive of Burgundy’s new wave of micro-négociants via a range of high-precision, low-intervention wines. Former estate manager at Domaine Prieuré-Roch, Pacalet set out on his own in 2001, quickly making a name for himself via a model that sees him partnering with various organic and biodynamic growers to make a range of wines at his small-scale winery. There, Pacalet follows a minimal-intervention approach via whole-bunch fermentation, ageing in old oak, natural yeasts, and minimal use of sulphur. The resultant wines, spanning a variety of communes, are characterised by energy and intensity, their captivating aromatics and seductive freshness harnessing a certain ‘funky’ purity. Having joined the family estate in 2019, Philippe’s son Réno is now carving his own path, launching a separate range late last year. With their importer Wine Source, we are thrilled to welcome both Philippe and Réno to the Club to tell us more about their respective approaches. We will taste a range of wines from the nascent 2024 vintage – a year defined by historically low yields but fine aromatic clarity and saline precision – as well as a trio of evolving vintages. This is a rare opportunity to explore how a shared winemaking philosophy of indigenous yeasts and strict terroir expression manifests across wines made by two generations. Do join us for what should be a fascinating evening. The wines we will be tasting: 2024 Maranges Blanc, Reno Pacalet 2024 Auxey-Duresses Blanc, Reno Pacalet 2024 Auxey-Duresses Rouge, Reno Pacalet 2024 Beaune Les Beaux Fougets, Cuvée Aria Rouge, Reno Pacalet 2024 Ladoix Blanc, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Meursault, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Gevrey Chambertin, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Pommard, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Nuits-St-Georges, 1er cru Aux Argillas, Philippe Pacalet 2023 Maranges, 1er cru La Fussière, Reno Pacalet 2021 Nuits-St-Georges, 1er Cru Aux Argillas, Philippe Pacalet 2020 Gevrey Chambertin, 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, Philippe Pacalet Wednesday 11th February St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. An exclusive invitation to taste the world’s oldest single malt Scotch whisky – Wednesday 24th September
£0.00Earlier this year, Gordon & MacPhail announced the release of the world’s oldest single malt Scotch whisky – Gordon & MacPhail 85 Years Old from Glenlivet Distillery, due for release in October. We are delighted, then, to invite a select group of whisky-loving Members to sample this liquid, and to taste a drop of liquid history. For more than 130 years, over four generations of family ownership, independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail has matched its own specially selected casks with spirit from over 100 Scottish distilleries. It was on 3rd February, 1940, in a quiet corner of the north-east of Scotland, that George Urquhart and his father, John, decided to lay down spirit from Glenlivet Distillery in a Gordon & MacPhail American oak cask to be enjoyed after their lifetime. During wartime, whisky production was curtailed due to rationing and lack of manpower, with the vast majority of malt whisky destined for the blends that dominated the market. Gordon and MacPhail was unusual in earmarking casks to be bottled in their own right as single malts. Only when the whisky was deemed ready would Cask 336 be shared. That time ended up being 85 years later – longer than any other single malt Scotch whisky in history – when the decision was taken to finally empty the cask and a total of 125 decanters of the 85 years old whisky were bottled – ‘not because it’s very old,’ says 4th generation family member Stephen Rankin, ‘but because of the quality’. Stephen will be our host to guide Members through not only the Gordon & MacPhail 85 Years Old from Glenlivet Distillery, but three other rare single malts from Gordon & MacPhail’s Rare Spirit Liquid Library. Please note that, while this is a complimentary event, it is limited to 24 attendees, and we have extended the initial invitation only to a select group of the Club’s Membership. We would ask, therefore, that if you sign up to the event and are then unable to attend, you let us know as soon as possible, so that we can offer your place to another Member. MS vs MW reloaded, with Kathrine Larsen-Robert MS and Richard Bampfield MW – Thursday 27th November
£115.00 – £130.00Price range: £115.00 through £130.00It is widely recognised that the Master Sommelier (MS) and Master of Wine (MW) qualifications represent the pinnacles of service and academic achievement in the wine world. The challenge of the blind tasting elements of the examinations alone is enough to send most of us into a cold sweat… There are 416 Masters of Wine dotted around the world, and 269 Master Sommeliers. And here at 67 Pall Mall, we are fortunate to work with several of them. In November, we will welcome the return of Club Member and friend, Richard Bampfield MW, alongside our Head of Wine for Europe, Kathrine Larsen-Robert MS, for a rescheduled follow-up to their much-loved event from earlier this year. This time, the pair will explore their different approaches to tasting, their motivations for pursuing their qualifications, and the work involved in the two different programmes. Both Kathrine and Richard have selected wines that have been an influence on their initial love for the subject and their subsequent careers – blind tastings are likely to feature! Join is for an informative but informal insight into the minds of an MW and an MS, and put your palate to the taste alongside the professionals… The wines we will be tasting: 2014 Fleur de Passion, Blanc de Blancs, Diebolt-Vallois, Champagne 2013 Dom Pérignon, Brut, Champagne 2019 Savennières, Les Genêts, Damien Laureau, Loire Valley 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, Phenomena, Castello di Argiano (Sesti) 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Pégau, Rhône Valley 2009 Chateau Beychevelle, St-Julien, Bordeaux 2022 Orange Muscat & Flora, Brown Brothers, Victoria, Australia Thursday 27th November St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. Burgundy: The Viticultural Revolution with William Kelley – Thursday 2nd March
£595.00The last handful of years has witnessed a viticultural revolution in Burgundy, unprecedented since the era of phylloxera. The manner in which vineyards are planted, how soils are cultivated and the way canopies are managed are all being rethought, with profound consequences for the wine in the glass. In this masterclass, William Kelley of The Wine Advocate explores this movement through the lens of some of Burgundy’s leading practitioners’ wines, ranging from grand cru vineyards to more humble appellations, all united by a common pursuit of excellence and willingness to adapt in a changing climate. We are delighted to welcome William to the St. James's Room for the first time, in what is sure to be an insightful and memorable evening spent tasting some truly exceptional Burgundy wines. Members should keep their eyes keenly trained on their inboxes for further exciting events with William in anticipation of the 2025 opening of our new Club in Beaune. William Kelley fell in love with wine while studying at Oxford, where he presided over the university's prestigious Wine Circle for three years while completing a doctorate in history. In addition to hosting tastings with many of the Old World's greatest wineries, ranging from Bordeaux first growths to boutique producers such as Yves Gangloff and Marta Rinaldi, he brought many of California's most celebrated winemakers to Oxford for the first time. Kelley had the privilege to cut his teeth as a taster on many of the great wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. After a stint covering Burgundy for Decanter magazine and working harvests in both California and the Côte d'Or, he made the move to The Wine Advocate in 2017, where his firsthand experience making wine of his own in Burgundy and California informs his writing style. We look forward to seeing you there. The wines we will be tasting: 2017 Domaine Jean-Marc Vincent St.Aubin 'Les Combes' 1er Cru, Jean-Marc Vincent 2018 Rully Blanc Maizières, Domaine Dureuil-Janthial 2017 Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin La Princée 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Domaine Lamy Caillat 2017 Volnay 1er Cru "Les Caillerets", Domaine Jean-Marc Bouley 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Dugat-Py 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Herbues, Nicolas Faure 2017 Corton, Les Grèves, Grand Cru, Domaine des Croix 2018 Domaine Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 'Pièce 15' Thursday 2nd March St. James’s Room 18:30 – Glass on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. What Makes a great Vintage in Burgundy? With Jasper Morris MW – Tuesday 26th April
£495.00Some are born great and some have greatness thrust upon them. Some wonderful vintages are delicious from the start, others you have to wait for. The debate continues between the more muscular 2009 and the deliciously svelte 2010: the former heralded from the start as a great vintage for Burgundy, the latter a more unexpected delight. Which is better now? Which will thrill us more in another decade? Jasper Morris MW will lead us through four pairs of wines, beginning with Domaine Leflaive’s superb 1er Cru Folatières. Our main focus will be on the red wines, leading in with a pair of premiers crus from Auxey-Duresses made by the insufficiently acclaimed Romain Taupenot, in charge of the family domaine in Morey St-Denis. The next pairing is a regular favourite: Frédéric Mugnier has shown such flair since he took over the Clos de la Maréchale vineyard in 2004, the first 1er cru in the Côte de Nuits as you head north from Beaune. Doubtless the least accessible now with the greatest promise for the future will be Faiveley’s fabulous grand cru Chambertin Clos de Bèze. What a series of wines to savour, with the added thrill of the competition between two great vintages in very different styles. Wines 2010 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières, Domaine Leflaive 2009 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières, Domaine Leflaive 2010 Auxey Duresses 1er Cru, Domaine Taupenot-Merme 2009 Auxey Duresses 1er Cru, Domaine Taupenot-Merme 2010 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, Domaine J-F Mugnier 2009 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, Domaine J-F Mugnier 2010 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Domaine Faiveley 2009 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Domaine Faiveley Should the event sell out before you are able to secure a ticket, please register your interest on the waiting list using this form. An exclusive invite to participate in the 67 Pall Mall Wine Academy – Wednesday 13th – Friday 15th August
£600.00As you are all aware, 67 Pall Mall is engaged in an exciting global development programme, with Clubs due to open in Bordeaux, Shanghai, Melbourne and more in the near future. This brings into focus the need to develop a talent pipeline, particularly for our sommelier teams, who are fundamental to delivering the outstanding wine experience that defines our Clubs. At the same time, we have been exploring ways to further develop our relationship with the charitable Gérard Basset Foundation, which is committed to facilitating the recruitment of young people from diverse backgrounds into the hospitality trade. All of which has led us to establish the 67 Pall Mall Wine Academy. This new initiative will not only provide opportunities for emerging talent and potential wine professionals, but also for you, our Members, to learn more about wine through our dedicated team of in-house experts. It will also afford Gerard Basset scholars valuable exposure to the world of exceptional service via an intensive programme of learning, tasting and personal development in the world’s most prestigious wine Club. The curriculum has been designed and will be delivered by the Club’s Heads of Wine in Europe and Asia, Kathrine Larsen-Robert MS and Richard Hemming MW, and will also feature selected guest contributors from across the wine world. It will combine structured seminars, hands-on learning, high-level tastings and dinners at top-end restaurants and in the Club, with deep dives into classic regions and styles via benchmark wines from some of the world’s finest producers. The ultimate aim is to educate and inspire through mentorship, knowledge and shared experience. Among the highlights of the programme will be: • A Bordeaux benchmarking tasting, featuring classed growth wines from the last three decades • A Prestige Cuvée Champagne comparative tasting • An ‘Icons of the New World’ tasting • Seminars on service, sustainability and blind-tasting techniques • Two dinners, including a private dinner at Restaurant 1890 by Gordon Ramsay at The Savoy It is important to note that this is not a formal academic course or qualification. Rather, from a Club perspective, the initiative helps us to identify talent for our growing number of Clubs across the world, while also cementing our role at the heart of the industry in nurturing the next generation of wine professionals. From a Member perspective, it is intended to provide committed wine lovers with a greater understanding and exposure to the world of fine wine, through the lens of professionals and mentors. The Academy is ultimately set to be a five-day residential programme, held across our Clubs around the world. In the first instance, however, we are launching the initiative with a small-scale, three-day immersion in London this summer, and we have a handful of places for Members, which we are delighted to offer on an invite-only basis. Venue: 67 Pall Mall and other central London venues Date: Daytime and evening, 13th-15th August (exact timings and schedule to follow) The price covers all wines and meals costs.
