Château Giscours Vertical Tasting Hosted by Alexander Van Beek | Monday 22nd November (Copy)
£130.00Château Giscours has a long and illustrious history, it was classified as a Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855 classification and has attracted a loyal following of connoisseurs over the centuries. Pierre de Lhomme, a rich draper founded the vineyard in 1552 in the prized Margaux commune and today it is owned by Dennis, Derk & Valerie Albada Jelgersma, the children of the late Eric Albada Jelgersma, the charismatic Dutch entrepreneur who was a renowned art collector and wine lover. Situated in the heart of the Margaux appellation, this third growth estate has undergone massive change under the direction of General Manager, Alexander Van Beek, a fellow dutchman, who arrived at the property in 1995 at the young age of 24. Since the purchase considerable investment has been made. Following an extensive terroir study there has been considerable replanting with a change from 60% Merlot in 1995 to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon today. Alexander will conduct a tasting spanning the 20 years of the property. A date not to be missed by any Bordeaux lover. Wines to be tasted: Château Giscours 1998, Château Giscours 2001, Château Giscours 2003, Château Giscours 2005, Château Giscours 2008, Château Giscours 2010, Château Giscours 2011 Château Giscours 2015, Château Giscours 2016 Monday 22nd November 2021 St James’s Room 18.30 –Masterclass begins £130 per ticketAdd to cart -

Dodging bullets – an evening with award-winning photojournalist Rick Findler | Wednesday 8th September
£50.00Join us for an inspiring evening with award-winning photojournalist Rick Findler. Rick has covered some of the most dangerous stories of the last 10 years, including the rise and fall of ISIS in Syria, Al-Shabaab terrorists in Somalia, the Hong Kong pro-democracy riots and has recently returned from Afghanistan. In 2013 Rick was smuggled through the closed borders of Syria to document the start of the Syrian civil war. His work is often published in leading publications such as The Times and The Guardian, with his photographs featured in awards such as The Picture Editors Guild Awards, The British Photography Awards, and The Sony World Photography Awards. Join us for a talk which will take you straight to the front lines of war, focusing on the adrenaline filled tasks of dodging bullets to get 'that picture' for the world's newspapers. He will also touch on the importance of fear management, and how he has learnt to maintain focus in high-stress environments. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Biodynamic Viticulture
Hosted by Jane Anson, Florence Cathiard, Daniel Cathiard, Yann Laudeho Leroy, Justine Tesseron, Bérénice Lurton, Frédéric Nivelle & Yuanjun Zhang While Bordeaux may not have carved out a name for itself as a hotbed of biodynamic viticulture, there exist a clutch of producers who have been quietly guided by its principles for years; furthermore, these are not boutique, artisanal operations, but some of the world’s most distinguished names such as Smith Haut Lafitte, Palmer and Latour. Dipping into this world of lunar calendars, compost preparations and fruit-versus-root days, Jane Anson speaks to Bordeaux’s biodynamic pioneer, Pontet-Canet, to hear how this once-considered extreme practice is achievable in such a capricious climate, and sits down with Yuanjun Zhang, wine buyer and sommelier at Bordeaux’s Tchin Tchin Wine Bar, for a tasting of superlative wines from these top-flight properties. Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, Pessac-Léognan 2018 Château Fonplégade, Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion 2016 Château Pontet-Canet, Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, Pauillac 2014 Château Palmer, Troisième Grand Cru Classé, Margaux 2010 Château Latour, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Pauillac 2009 Château Climens, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Barsac 2011Read more -
In Good Spirits: 58 Gin
Hosted by Amelia Singer & Carmen O'Neal 58 Gin essentially takes its name from 57 failed distillations which, for managing director Carmen O’Neal, didn’t quite hit the bullseye. The following run however was a triumph worth honouring. Ensconced in a London railway arch, the ‘Gin from the Heart’ sustainable ethos of 58 Gin can be detected every step of the way – even the apples and sloes (once they’ve fulfilled their primary purpose) are turned into crumble desserts. Wine educator Amelia Singer pays a visit to discover what makes this gin artisan tick. Rolling up her sleeves she mans the production line to concoct her own potion, before settling in at the bar with an array of gins which are also available as a tasting kit to digital members. The Expert Series: A comparison of the wine tasting approaches of a Sommelier and a Master of Wine
Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW & Zsofi Kiss Much has been written about the differences between the Master Sommelier and Master of Wine exams, in particular the approach to wine tasting. And yet it is likely that most sommeliers know little about the MW approach…….and vice-versa. In this episode of The Expert Series, join Zsofi Kiss, 67 Pall Mall’s Assistant Head Sommelier, and Richard Bampfield MW for a comparative tasting, each in the manner taught by their separate organisations. Who knows? maybe they will have more in common than we think… Homonna, Hatari, Tokaji Furmint, Tokaj 2016 (Please note that due to availability, a different vintage is being tasted in the episode than what is included in the wine kit) Felton Road, Block 6, Chardonnay, Central Otago 2017 (Please note that due to availability, a different vintage is being tasted in the episode than what is included in the wine kit) Weingut Sybille Kuntz, Organic Trocken Orange, Riesling Mosel 2017 Fèlsina Berardenga, Colonia, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2009 Château Pichon-Longueville-Baron, 2ème Cru Classé, Pauillac 1996 Kikelet Pince, Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos, Tokaj 2013Read more -
Altered Perceptions with Demetri Walters MW & Neil Tully MW | Monday 26th July
£85.00Have you ever considered how wine packaging affects your perception and appreciation of what's in the bottle? We take it for granted that what's on the label is genuinely in the bottle, though we little consider how readily our minds might deceive us in this respect. In order to put this notion to the test, Demetri Walters MW quizzes branding expert, Neil Tully MW, into what our brains are telling us when we select a bottle of wine. In an entertaining exchange of ideas on this topic you, the guinea-pigs, will taste a series of wines that test the supposed reality of grape variety, price & quality, regional typicity and maturity, though things may not be entirely as they seem. Expect some trickery, and a lot of fun! Wines to be confirmed. Monday 26th July St James’s Room 18:30 – welcome drink on arrival 19:00 – seated workshop to begin £85 per ticketAdd to cart -

The Expert Series: The Joy of Muscat
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW & Sarah Jane Evans MW Join Demetri Walters MW and Sarah Jane Evans MW for a celebration of Muscat, a very ancient grape that has a distinct personality. In all its forms, whether dry, sweet, or fortified sweet, Muscat is pungently aromatic and distinct. Known to the ancient Greeks, as well as other key winemaking cultures around the Mediterranean world, Muscat has endured for millennia, but is still not taken sufficiently seriously by those who aren't so familiar with it. Be part of its renaissance with tasting various well known wine styles to illustrate the point, led expertly by Demetri.
