Deep Dive Bordeaux: 1st wines vs. 2nd wines
Hosted by Jane Anson & Richard Bampfield MW Can 2nd wines in the ‘best’ vintages outperform 1st wines in the more challenging years? Join Jane Anson and Richard Bampfield MW for an investigative look at if the old Bordeaux mantra rings true, that smart money buys Second Wines in the top vintages, and the Grands Vins of the lesser. Here we taste and compare sequential vintages of the Grand Vins and Second Wines of Château Cheval Blanc, Château Margaux, and Château Rauzan-Ségla, in a tasting that puts our perceptions of 1st and 2nd wines to the test. Jasper on Terroir: Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW & Karine Serafin Lofty in both reputation and altitude, the premier cru of Les Cazetiers is referenced by many commentators as being one of the finest, if not the finest in Gevrey, and planted at up to 370m it’s also one of the highest in all of Burgundy. One such ardent fan, Burgundy expert Jasper Morris MW, interviews Karine Sérafin of Domaine Sérafin - one of the appellation’s top estates - to discover what elevates the vineyard above many of its peers. Discover one of Burgundy’s most fascinating domaines – Tuesday 24th February (NM)
£195.00 – £210.00Price range: £195.00 through £210.00Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageDomaine Prieuré-Roch stands among Burgundy’s most fascinating estates – described by Jasper Morris MW as 'exceptional and unconventional’. The story begins in 1988 when Henry-Frédéric Roch - then co-director of the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti - chose to forge his own path by acquiring prime vineyard parcels being sold by DRC. Roch’s lineage gave him a rare insight: he was the grandson of Henri Leroy, the revered founder of Maison Leroy, and closely tied to the great Burgundian families that shape the region’s history. Over the years, the domaine has grown to encompass around 20 hectares across some of Burgundy’s most famous terroirs - from Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée through Nuits-Saint-Georges, Ladoix and Savigny-les-Beaune. Almost unheard of in the Côte d’Or, Prieuré-Roch owns three of the region’s most prestigious clos as monopoles: Clos des Corvées in Nuits-Saint-Georges; fellow premier cru Clos des Varoilles in Gevrey-Chambertin; and the jewel-like Clos Goillotte in Vosne-Romanée. Inspired by his grandfather’s legacy, Roch farmed organically, championed whole-bunch vinification and avoided synthetic treatments, allowing the terroir to shine through. Since his passing in 2018, Roch’s philosophy has continued under the stewardship of winemaker Antonio Quari, whose wines are celebrated for their extraordinary energy, aromatic complexity and layered depth. We are delighted to invite Members to join Antonio for what promises to be a fascinating evening exploring the wines via the 2023 vintage, alongside a bonus 2017 wine. The wines we will be tasting: 2023 Ladoix Le Cloud, Le Clou Rouge, Domaine Prieuré-Roch 2023 Vieilles Vignes Premier Cru, Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Prieuré-Roch 2023 Clos des Varoilles Premier Cru (Monopole), Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Prieuré-Roch 2023 Vieilles Vignes Premier Cru, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Prieuré-Roch 2023 Vosne-Romanee, Le Clos Goillotte, Domaine Prieuré-Roch 2023 Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru, Chambertin, Domaine Prieuré-Roch 2017 Le Clos des Corvées Premier Cru, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Prieuré-Roch Tuesday 24th February St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsPlease note that once your order is placed, your ticket status will display as “processing” until after the event, when your member account is then charged. Members’ Social – Monday 30th January
£45.00With a new year ahead, we have a plethora of vinous delights up our sleeves for our monthly Members’ Socials. Previous editions have seen us test our Members' olfactory prowess with Head Sommelier Federico Moccia's electric blind tastings. We are now thrilled to announce our Club Quiz debut, 67 Pall Mall’s wine-centric take on the universally adored pub quiz, where general wine knowledge will be put to the test, with a few Club-focused teasers thrown in to boot… To play along with quizmaster Federico, Members need only scan a QR code to answer a selection of multiple-choice questions: can you guess which Bordeaux second label was most popular in the Club in 2022? Or which village in Burgundy has the most Grand Crus? For a layer of competitive intrigue, results will play out live on screen, so Members can see how they stack up against their vin-curious compatriots. Those with full marks go into a draw, with prizes awarded on the night. However, this is a test of knowledge where points are by no means commensurate with pleasure. Regardless of your know-how, the fizz will be flowing as always, and delicious canapés will be doing the rounds accompanied by a selection of sommelier-chosen wines. Members need not even enter to enjoy this social; simply enjoy the duelling, glass in hand. We’d be delighted if Members want to join us for a post-quiz dinner in the Members' Lounge. Reservations can be made and, as always, your wine-loving friends are most welcome. Simply select the number of tickets required when booking, and away we go... Academie du Vin Book Club – The Bordeaux Club with Hugh Johnson, Neil McKendrick and Simon Berry – Friday 16th December
£150.00Join us for an event exploring the history of the Bordeaux Club, a group of six friends who gathered to share and celebrate the finest wines of Bordeaux. Over its 70-year life there were only nineteen members in all. Like-minded in their love of wine, they differed wildly (often alarmingly!) in their personal wealth, life and circumstances. Their opinions, always voiced, had the power to ignite anger and almost divide friendships just as easily as they bound them together. The event celebrates the launch of the book of the same name by Neil, member and minute-taker for 57 of the Club’s 70 extraordinary years. The book celebrates the beauties of top-class Bordeaux and the houses where they were drunk – from splendid country mansions to panelled Dickensian boardrooms. This is a record of connoisseurs in full cry– their quarry many of the greatest wines ever made. ❝Associations and societies such as the Bordeaux Club are the very acme of civilization. Botticelli and Bach were engaged in the eternal quest for truth and beauty in painting and music, and the Bordeaux Club did the same for viniculture. ❞ - ANDREW ROBERTS A copy of the book is included in the ticket price. Hugh, Neil and Simon will be tasting and discussing some fine clarets, including: 2008 Chateau Calon-Ségur, Grand Cru Classé 1998 Chateau Batailley, Grand Cru Classé 1988 Château Rausan-Ségla, Grand Cru Classé 2010 Château Latour, Le Pauillac de Latour St. James’s Room 18:30- Glass on arrival 19:00 - Event begins 20:30 - Event ends Please note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. Punset Masterclass with Marina Marcarino – Tuesday 29th November
£75.00Continuing our quest to bring under-the-radar producers to our Members, we are delighted to welcome a pioneer of Piedmont, Marina Marcarino, to the St. James’s Room, where we will get to enjoy sumptuous wines and learn about her nature-based philosophy. The Macarinos are steeped in wine production, although bottles were kept within the family until 1964 when, with commercial success beckoning, Renzo Marcarino shared with the wider world. 1982 represented another Punset milestone with Marina discovering organic farming, although it was a brutal introduction with the first vintage after conversion being entirely lost. Not one to be easily discouraged, Marina persevered and is today considered a reference point for organic viticulture, along the way adding biodynamics to her methods and adhering to the agronomic philosophy of Manasobu Fukuoka, also known as ‘the agriculture of doing nothing’. Please join us for an insightful evening with the exuberant and self-confessed hyperactive Marina, and taste the wines - including some stunning library vintages - which have made her one of Piedmont’s hottest tickets. The wines we will be tasting: 2020 Punset, Roero Arneis 2020 Punset, Barbera d'Alba 2020 Punset, Dolcetto d'Alba 2015 Punset, Basarin, Barbaresco Riserva 2007 Punset, Basarin, Barbaresco Riserva 2013 Punset, San Cristoforo Campo Quadro, Barbaresco Riserva 2004 Punset, San Cristoforo Campo Quadro, Barbaresco Riserva Tuesday 29th November St. James’s Room 18:30 – Glass on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. The Yin and Yang of Wine Presented by Janet Wang, James Bampfield and Richard Bampfield MW
£100.00Yin and Yang is a philosophical concept that most of us understand as the interactions of opposites: it can describe extremes, tensions, contradictions, but also co-existence, symbiosis and balance. As 67 Members know, great wine is created through the resolution of opposites in the vineyard and the chais: day and night, heat and cold, wet and dry, wood and fruit, sugar and acidity…. Yin and Yang therefore offers a perfect medium for us to gain deeper insight and appreciation for wine. Join us for an evening hosted by Richard Bampfield MW and Janet Z. Wang, with Richard’s brother James as their special guest. Richard and Janet will in tandem be taking us through a flight of 8 wines selected to demonstrate different and contrasting aspects of Yin and Yang – some obvious and others more nuanced. James, who specialises in Eastern philosophy, will treat us to some bonus material about turning concepts of Yin and Yang into practical application in business organisation and leadership. The presentations will cover not only how the concepts of Yin and Yang feature in the wines themselves, but also how they influence the tasting experience. We hope Members will join us in what is sure to be an enlightening and distinctive evening… The wines that will be tasted: Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaumes 2018 Le Domaine d’Henri Hamilton Russell Chardonnay 2020 2017 Syrah “The Joy Fantastic” Black Sheep Finds Saint-Joseph “Le Grand Pompée” 2011 Jaboulet 2018 Wwe Dr. H. Live From the Vines: E. Guigal
£155.00Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW & Philippe Guigal Established in 1946, Guigal is arguably a more recent tenant of a region which – like many others in France – threads its way back to the Romans. Yet, despite its relative precociousness, for much of its existence Guigal has been justifiably framed as Rhône nobility. Guigal’s birthplace is a region in the Rhône’s north where the sun is capable of cascading down onto the vines to such extremes that it gave the appellation its name: Côte Rôtie, or ‘roasted slope’. While the northern Rhône remains its beating heart, in 2017 Guigal spread its wings, incorporating into its stable the Châteauneuf-du-Pape property of Domaine Nalys. The sum of these parts represents a cross section of the Rhône Valley’s preeminent sites, and Philippe Guigal joins Richard Bampfield MW to discuss his family’s adventures and taste the wines which are also available as a tasting kit to our digital members. Live From the Vines: Château Montrose
Hosted by Jane Anson & Hervé Berland We are on home turf for Jane Anson in this episode of Live From the Vines, as we meander to Saint-Estèphe to meet Hervé Berland, CEO of Château Montrose. Here we learn the story of three families, pioneers in the Médoc since 1815, each on a quest for excellence and legendary vintages, who built and shaped Château Montrose over the course of two centuries. We then look into the future through the eyes of current owners, Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who launched a seven year renovation of the estate, including a 1,000-m2, 11 metre-high main barrel hall for maturation in ideal conditions and 3,000 m2 of rooftop solar panels. 850th anniversary of Schloss Gobelsburg – Jubilee Cuvée tasting with Michael Moosbrugger | Tuesday 19th October
£65.00Schloss Gobelsburg, wine producer in the Kamptal region of Eastern Austria, is celebrating its 850th anniversary this year. They track their history as a wine producing estate back to 1171. The castle still belongs to the Cistercian monks of nearby Zwettl, though Michael Moosbrugger has overseen the estate since 1996, and presided over a period of dramatic success, making this now one of the most iconic estates of Austria. Seven times Schloss Gobelsburg has featured in Wine and Spirits Magazine “Top 100 Wineries” as well as innumerable other international and Austrian awards for both the winery and its wines. Join Michael in the St. James’s Room to present a range of recent, and not so recent vintages, on 19th October. In addition to his great single vineyard Riesling and Gruner Veltliner from the best terroirs of the regions: (Lamm for GV and Heiligenstein for Riesling) we will also drink the Jubilee Cuvée, released this year. It has just won 99 points from Stuart Piggott, writing for James Suckling, and must be on the shortlist for the year’s most unusual wine: a varietal and vintage blend of 30 different vintages, taking us back as far as 1971. Michael has blended this to mark this landmark in the history of this great estate, and we are delighted to offer our Members the opportunity to toast to it’s individualism. Wines to be tasted: Brut Rosé sparkling GV Langenlois 2020 GV Lamm 2013 Riesling Gaisberg 2017 Riesling Heiligenstein 2010 Jubilee Tradition 50 years Pinot Noir Reserve 2010 GV Eiswein 2018. 20-vintage vertical of SuperTuscan Sassicaia going back to 1975, with owner Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta – Wednesday 26th November
£2,250.00Read moreYes, you read that correctly. Well, we did promise you some rather special events to celebrate our 10th anniversary…
Sassicaia is the original ‘SuperTuscan’ – a category it essentially invented with the 1968 launch of its revolutionary Bordeaux blend. The wine actually dates back to the 1940s, when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by a visit to Bordeaux, planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on his San Guido estate on the Tuscan coast, to make a wine for family and friends. In a region dominated by Sangiovese, such a move was not only unconventional, it was against the prevailing rules, meaning that when the wine came to be released commercially, it was done so as a humble Vino da Tavola. Nonetheless, Sassicaia’s elegance, complexity and longevity quickly gained critical acclaim, helping to redefine Italian wine’s global image and inspiring a wave of winemakers to experiment in similar fashion. Its 1985 vintage alone is a legend in its own lifetime, while the label as a whole sits not only as a benchmark for the country’s fine wines but alongside the world’s very top Cabernet blends, from Bordeaux to California. We are beyond thrilled to welcome Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, granddaughter of the founder and today the face of the estate, to host 12 Members at this landmark event. She will be joined in assessing the wines by our Head Sommelier Federico Moccia and friend of the Club Nelson Pari. Please note that there are only 12 places available at this very special tasting, on a first come, first served basis. 1975 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1977 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1978 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1981 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1982 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1985 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1988 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1990 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1993 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1997 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1999 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2001 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2004 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2009 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2011 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2013 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2016 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2018 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2021 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2022 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri Wednesday 26th November St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:00 - Break for canapés to be served 21:30 - Masterclass ends Please note, tickets for this tasting are refundable for cancellations up to 1 month before the event. Valentine’s Day Oyster Shucking & Wine Pairing Masterclass
£125.00"I need to think, and to think I must have oysters and champagne." - Gyles Brandreth We are very excited to invite Members to a very romantic Oyster shucking workshop, where our sommeliers have chosen the perfect wines to pair. If you are a fan of oysters, then you know the pleasures that these intriguing bivalves offer. Oysters are as varied as their oceanic terroir - they can be crisp or silky, briny or sweet, 'citrusy' or redolent of cucumber. And no matter what the flavour or texture, they all beg for just the right wine... Oyster Boy combines street market patter with fine dining expertise, and for the last 8 years, the team have been visiting the finest of Europe’s many oyster farms, tasting the various bivalves to bring the best flavours and textures back to the London locations. We welcome Oyster Boy for a pairing of man's oldest delicacy with wines chosen by our sommelier team, following numerous tastings we have orchestrated to ensure that we perfect the pairings. In this workshop, Members will learn the differences in oyster species and their farming methods, the different textures and tastes they possess, and the finest wines with which to pair them. Additionally, you will also learn how to professionally and safely shuck (open) an oyster yourself. The wine & oyster pairings we will taste: WEST MERSEA ROCK, Colchester, Essex Meaty and briny with agricultural and herby aftertaste 2017 Chateau Guiraud , 'Le G de Chateau Guiraud' Blanc Sec CARLINGFORD- North East of Dublin, County Louth.
