A masterclass with former Head Sommelier Terry Kandylis – Wednesday 5th November
£145.00 – £160.00Price range: £145.00 through £160.00As part of our ten-year celebrations, we’re thrilled to be welcoming back some former favourites who have played a key role in shaping the Club’s journey over the last decade. And on Wednesday 5th November, Terry Kandylis will be returning to take us on a journey through a flight of his favourites wines, as well as a selection from his own winemaking venture. Terry was with us at the Club from its opening, latterly as Head Sommelier, before the pandemic brought a change of direction. Back in 2020, in the midst of lockdown, Terry took a trip to Ribera del Duero, where he uncovered a range of plots – often old, abandoned bush vines that were due to be uprooted. The intrepid – and somewhat incredulous – sommelier bought up the sites and set out to preserve and enhance the legacy of the gnarly old vines. Today, as well as serving as Group Head Sommelier of Noble Rot restaurants, Terry oversees a range of wines for his label Bendito Destino, or Blessed Destiny. ‘67 contributed hugely to my wine knowledge and experience and I will forever be grateful for the time I spent there and the people I met,’ says Terry. ‘I wanted to come back and host a tasting of wines that shaped me through my journey and gave me the inspiration to do what I do now.’Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe wines Terry has chosen all reflect this, often via the people behind them, starting with Jean-Marie Guffens, the Belgian maverick who single handedly put Maconnais back on the vinous map by making ‘Montrachet for normal people’. Dujac, meanwhile, is ‘the producer that made me fall in love with Burgundy’, while Tondonia is ‘Rich, textural, complex, a gastronomic wine that confirms why we should be drinking more rosé with character.’
Finally, Terry has selected a Barolo from Roagna – ‘another inspirational producer, which Luca Roagna has taken to a completely new level by looking back at history and learning from the past generations. That’s something I try to do too. “The past is the future” – that's my motto.’ We are delighted to welcome a pillar of our past back to the Club to present a selection of these favourite personal picks alongside a quartet of his own astonishing wines. The wines we will be tasting: 2020 Mâcon-Pierreclos, Tri de Chavigne, Domaine Guffens Heynen 2023 Bendito Destino, Abillo Mayor ‘Los Prados’ 2012 Viña Tondonia, Rosado 2022 Bendito Destino, Clarete, Navazal 2014 Charmes-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Domaine Dujac 2023 Bendito Destino, La Cabaña 2010 Barolo, Roagna 2022 Bendito Destino, Los Castaños Wednesday 5th November St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:30 - Masterclass endsPlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 5 business days before the event. Federico’s Christmas favourites – Friday 2nd December
£75.00Not all Christmas lists are created equal, and few, if any, provoke as much serious thought as the curation of the wine list for your Christmas Day table: Champagne or Chablis with the smoked salmon, perhaps even an off-piste fino Sherry, and does opening that tempting but youthful classed growth equal vinous infanticide? Fortunately, the Club’s Head Sommelier Federico Moccia is on hand to help crystallise your thoughts (or delightfully muddy the waters) with a clutch of superb wines. Federico’s hand-picked selection of his festive favourites will prove ideal partners for your dishes over the Christmas season, including the big day itself. We hope to see you in the St. James’s Room for an evening of mince-pie merriment awash with fine wines and a warm festive glow. The wines we will be tasting: NV Charles Heidsieck, Brut Réserve 2018 Domaine Paul Pillot, Les Champs Gains, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 2019 CVNE, Contino Blanco, Rioja 2015 Monchiero, Montanello, Barolo Riserva 2009 Château Pichon Longueville, Réserve de la Comtesse, Pauillac 1997 Niepoort, Vintage Port Friday 2nd December St. James’s Room 18:30 – Glass on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. Louis M. Martini Masterclass with Edouard Baijot MW – Tuesday 13th December
£85.00Louis M. Martini is etched into Napa Valley folklore and has been creating top-tier Cabernet Sauvignon since 1933. The man himself reached the shores of the United States in 1899 at 12 years of age with little English or education to speak of. When 19, he returned to Italy to learn his craft, before returning and finding minor success in producing grape ‘bricks’ and concentrate which could legally be used for home winemaking during Prohibition. One of the first to champion single varietal wines in Napa and the first winery built in the region after the repeal of Prohibition, Louis M. Martini’s legacy of innovation has since been handed down through the generations. Join Edouard Baijot MW in the St. James’s Room for a masterclass in which we discover seven stellar wines from this iconic Napa Valley winery, including its fascinating and diverse expressions of Cabernet from California’s premier regions. The wines we will be tasting: 2018 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Monte Rosso Gnarly Vine Zinfandel 2016 Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Lot 1 Cabernet Sauvignon Tuesday 13th December St. James’s Room 18:30 - J Cuvée 20 Brut on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. Deep Dive Bordeaux: The Terroirs of Saint-Émilion
Hosted by Jane Anson & Etienne Le Floc'h Saint-Emilion is renowned for its cool, clay and limestone soils which provide the perfect foil for the early-ripening Merlot, the signature grape of this striking corner of Bordeaux. However, closer inspection of its contours soon reveals that the geological makeup of this grand appellation is a mite more complex. Accompanying Jane Anson in her excavation of Saint-Emilion’s soils is Etienne Le Floc'h of wine merchant Etablissement Martin. Supported by a clutch of imperious wines from notable vintages, the pair debate the makeup of these terroirs, their intriguing individuality and how these characteristics are ultimately realised in these much-coveted bottles. Extreme winemaking with Patagonia’s Otronia and superstar winemaker Alberto Antonini – Monday 13th October
£95.00 – £110.00Price range: £95.00 through £110.00‘Extreme winemaking’ has become something of a beacon for those looking for characterful wines from offbeat regions. And it doesn’t get much more extreme – or offbeat – than the wines of Otronia, made in the world’s most southerly vineyard. In Chubut, at parallel 45’33, Otronia’s vineyards are 500 miles further south than those of that other famous Patagonian outpost – Piero Incisa della Rocchetta and Jean-Marc Roulot’s Bodega Chacra. Here, in 2010, Argentinian energy tycoon Alejandro Bulgheroni planted 50 hectares of vines with the initial goal of making only sparkling wine (it was felt there would be insufficient warmth to ripen grapes for still wines). But the cool climate, which lends a high natural acidity to the grapes along with a remarkable aromatic intensity, is compensated by long, sunny days that yield a purity of sunlight, while the inherently dry, disease-free conditions allow organic practices to be followed. Even so, making wine in the middle of a cold desert, with no rain, extreme winds and temperature variations, stretches the limits of viticulture. The environment is incredibly hostile, with very little rainfall, bitterly cold temperatures, year-round frost-risk and winds of up to 110km/hr. But fortune favours the brave, and these merciless conditions have given rise to elegant wines of freshness and purity, precision and tension. They are overseen by world-renowned Alberto Antonini, the consultant winemaker who has made wines all around the world for clients such as Antinori, Biondi-Santi, Robert Mondavi, Au Bon Climat and Zuccardi. ‘Otronia is an amazing and challenging project I started from scratch back in 2011,’ he says. ‘I’m so happy with the results…’ And we are very happy to welcome Alberto to the Club. We invite you to join him for an evening exploring some of the world’s most extreme wines with one of the world’s most acclaimed winemakers as we taste Otronia’s flagship Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs alongside other wines from this astonishing location. Rhône legend Château Rayas going back to 1998 – Tuesday 18th November
£995.00 – £1,010.00Price range: £995.00 through £1,010.00As we continue the build-up to our 10th anniversary celebrations, the headline events keep on coming… Few names in the Rhône Valley are wrapped in as much mystique and intrigue as Château Rayas. Undoubtedly the most acclaimed name in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, its wines have transcended the appellation to become fiercely collected, dizzyingly pricey and widely revered for their pure, silken expressions of Grenache. Yet behind them is a rather ramshackle provenance. The Rayas cellar was described by Jancis Robinson MW as the least salubrious she has ever visited. ‘I’ve never seen such grey, ancient, cobwebby casks ranged apparently at random in the dusty, earth-floored winery,’ she wrote of a rare visit to the property. And yet… ‘The most extraordinary of many extraordinary aspects of Rayas is how pure the wines are compared to the conditions in which they are made and aged. Rich and ethereal, transparent and floral, utterly hedonistic but without heft…’ she says. There is little doubt that Rayas is, to put it mildly, unorthodox. North-facing vines on soil featuring none of Châteauneuf’s famous ‘galets roulés’; ridiculously low yields of around 15hl/ha; whole-bunch ferments in concrete tanks; and aged in rarely seen 450-litre ‘double-piéce’ and larger oak foudres. Both the grand vin and the second wine, Pignan, are 100% Grenache while the wines of a separate estate, Château de Fonsalette, include two red Côtes du Rhônes: a Grenache-Syrah-Cinsault blend and an ultra-rare single-vineyard Syrah. We have managed to assemble a stunning line-up of all four wines across three vintages – 1998, 1999 and 2000. To present them, someone who knows the wines as well as anyone – Rhône expert Matt Walls, contributing editor and Rhône Regional Chair for Decanter and the author of two books on the Rhône: Wines of the Rhône (2021) and The Smart Travellers Wine Guide to the Rhône Valley (2025). ‘Just how does Emmanuel Reynaud create wines that are so strong in character, so identifiable by their perfume alone? So delicate but so long-lived?’ asks Matt. ‘Only he knows. But having visited Rayas every year since 2012, I've gleaned various points on how he works. I still can’t fully explain the miracle of his wines, but I'll share what I know about the myth and legend that surround Rayas.’ It should make for an unforgettable evening. Why clones make a difference in the vineyard – Friday 26th September
£75.00 – £90.00Price range: £75.00 through £90.00We all know that the vagaries of terroir mean Chardonnay grown in Burgundy will taste very different from Chardonnay grown in California. But even within the same vineyard, the planting of varying clones means the same grape variety can yield very different characteristics. Chardonnay grown around the world is genetically identical, but develops clonal variations according to the local terroir. These mutations can alter the physiology of the vine, creating differing foliage types, grape cluster/berry sizes, skin-juice ratio, sugar/acid/tannin levels, colour etc etc. It is these variations that lend individual clones their character, which shines through in the eventual wine – leading wine geeks to get very excited about wines made from the Gingin or Pommard clones, for example. We are delighted, then, to welcome founder of the West London Wine School Jimmy Smith to make sense of all this in his signature accessible, inclusive and entertaining style. With fellow educator and winemaker Sam Hill, he will explain how clones work and why they’re important, all by way of live examples in the form of the debut release of clonal wines from their Surrey Hills winery, Beare Green. Jimmy and Sam have meticulously researched the impact of clonal selection of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to produce a range of exceptionally high-quality wines. Working with some of the UK's top growers across the South of England, the winery crafts small-batch wines which, beyond the all-important clonal selection, harness natural yeast fermentation and minimal intervention amid a range of other winemaking innovations. All will be revealed on the night – so join us to tune in and geek out (in a very non-geeky way). The wines we will be tasting: 2023 Dio Bacchus, Surrey Hills (glass on arrival) 2023 Chardonnay, Thakeham Vineyard (Clone 121), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 95), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 96), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Clonal Blend, West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 777), West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 114), West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Clonal Blend, West Sussex Friday 26th September Lutyens Room 18:30 - Welcome Drink 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. 2024 Burgundy with maverick micro-negociant Philippe Pacalet – Wednesday 11th February
£125.00 – £140.00Price range: £125.00 through £140.00Few names evoke the same level of devotion among Burgundy lovers as Philippe Pacalet. A master of transparency, Philippe has, over the last two decades, carved out something of a cult following as one of the most inventive of Burgundy’s new wave of micro-négociants via a range of high-precision, low-intervention wines. Former estate manager at Domaine Prieuré-Roch, Pacalet set out on his own in 2001, quickly making a name for himself via a model that sees him partnering with various organic and biodynamic growers to make a range of wines at his small-scale winery. There, Pacalet follows a minimal-intervention approach via whole-bunch fermentation, ageing in old oak, natural yeasts, and minimal use of sulphur. The resultant wines, spanning a variety of communes, are characterised by energy and intensity, their captivating aromatics and seductive freshness harnessing a certain ‘funky’ purity. Having joined the family estate in 2019, Philippe’s son Réno is now carving his own path, launching a separate range late last year. With their importer Wine Source, we are thrilled to welcome both Philippe and Réno to the Club to tell us more about their respective approaches. We will taste a range of wines from the nascent 2024 vintage – a year defined by historically low yields but fine aromatic clarity and saline precision – as well as a trio of evolving vintages. This is a rare opportunity to explore how a shared winemaking philosophy of indigenous yeasts and strict terroir expression manifests across wines made by two generations. Do join us for what should be a fascinating evening. The wines we will be tasting: 2024 Maranges Blanc, Reno Pacalet 2024 Auxey-Duresses Blanc, Reno Pacalet 2024 Auxey-Duresses Rouge, Reno Pacalet 2024 Beaune Les Beaux Fougets, Cuvée Aria Rouge, Reno Pacalet 2024 Ladoix Blanc, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Meursault, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Gevrey Chambertin, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Pommard, Philippe Pacalet 2024 Nuits-St-Georges, 1er cru Aux Argillas, Philippe Pacalet 2023 Maranges, 1er cru La Fussière, Reno Pacalet 2021 Nuits-St-Georges, 1er Cru Aux Argillas, Philippe Pacalet 2020 Gevrey Chambertin, 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, Philippe Pacalet Wednesday 11th February St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. The 2021 vintage has already attracted significant acclaim, with Eric Guido of Vinous describing it as 'a marriage of the previous two vintages, combining rich, intense fruit with finely balanced tannins' to deliver 'elegance in the extreme'. Alongside the headline releases, a small selection of Rosso di Montalcino 2024 and late-release 2023s will also be poured, offering an early insight into the next chapter of the appellation. We will also be joined by Santiago Marone Cinzano, who will present the inaugural releases of his pioneering 'itinerant cru' Brunello Lot. 1. Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one such estate, its championing of South Africa’s coastal Hemel-en-Aarde district, 50 years ago, foreshadowing and enabling the region’s emergence as the country’s prime cool-climate haven. Even 30 years ago, it was still the only winery in the region. Today, there are 28 – and Hamilton Russell’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay stand indisputably among the country’s finest. The brand was founded by Tim Hamilton Russell in 1975, but its international acclaim has been achieved under the direction of his son, Anthony, who took over in 1994. Throughout it all, the focus on just two varieties has remained total. ‘The best decision I ever made,’ says Anthony, ‘was focusing solely on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, instead of 11 different varieties.’ Anthony’s recent interview in our Back Label newsletter will give some sense of what an entertaining speaker he is. We are delighted to welcome him to the club to celebrate the 50th year of his family winery with a Pinot-themed dinner going back into the archives. Do join us for what should be a memorable evening.
