A Rare Look at the Geography of Wine with Daniel Crouch Rare Books – Wednesday 28th May
£65.00Just a short stroll from the Club lies one of London’s most quietly extraordinary destinations - Daniel Crouch Rare Books – a world-renowned specialist in rare maps, atlases and travel books, and something of a guardian of extraordinary objects that once defined how the world was understood. We are delighted, then, to welcome Daniel and his team to the Club to showcase highlights from this unique collection, focusing on wine regions in particular, and take Members on a journey through time, borders and discovery. With clients ranging from museums to modern-day explorers, the collection includes some of the most significant cartographic works in existence. Of particular note is a complete set of Louis Larmat’s Atlas de la France Vinicole – the world’s first national wine atlas. Published between 1941 and 1947, this six-volume opus blends cartographic precision with the romance of terroir. Also on show, a stunning 1874 hand-coloured map of Bordeaux’s fabled 1855 Classification, produced by Unal Serres. Commissioned for the Exposition Universelle in Paris and endorsed by Napoleon III, this map was a turning point in codifying Bordeaux’s greatest estates by price and prestige. Wine & The Food of Asia
£45.00 – £84.00Price range: £45.00 through £84.00Wine & The Food of Asia is 67 Pall Mall's third book. Authored by Head of Wine Asia, Richard Hemming MW in collaboration with the esteemed At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy, the book explores the intricate art of pairing wine with Asian cuisine, offering readers original insights into harmonising diverse culinary traditions with the world of wine. Wine & The Food of Asia is the culmination of extensive research, including hundreds of methodical tastings conducted over the course of a year. Featuring more than 400 wines from nearly 100 grape varieties across 20 countries, the book presents 80 iconic Asian recipes paired with an array of wines—from approachable favourites to rare gems—designed to captivate both casual wine enthusiasts and seasoned collectors. At the heart of the book lies a comprehensive exploration of pairing wine with the bold, diverse, and often challenging flavours of Asian cuisine. Richard Hemming MW brings over two decades of experience in viticulture, winemaking, and wine education to this ambitious project. By bridging the worlds of wine and Asian gastronomy, Hemming challenges traditional approaches and offers a fresh perspective on pairing wine with dishes from 13 countries, including India, Nepal, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea, Japan—and, of course, Singapore. In addition to being a wine reference, Wine & The Food of Asia doubles as a practical kitchen guide. Recipes for beloved dishes such as Pad Thai and Black Pepper Crab, provided by the culinary experts at the At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy, are accompanied by expertly curated wine pairings. For each recipe, Hemming suggests one primary match along with at least two alternative options, giving readers flexibility and inspiration. “Matching wine with food is about the pursuit of pleasure, not dogma. The most enjoyable part of creating this book was cooking the recipes at home and pairing them with great wines. For me, it’s all about bringing people together to share good food and wonderful wine. That’s the essence of what 67 Pall Mall is about,” shares Richard Hemming MW. Jeannie Cho Lee MW lauds the book, saying, “It was with delight and pleasure that I read this much-needed book. The world of wine is vast and deep; the world of Asian cuisine may be even more complex. Bringing the two together is nothing short of herculean!” Whether used as a wine guide, a cookbook, or a source of inspiration, this book is an essential addition to the collections of wine and food lovers everywhere. The book is priced at £45.00, the pricing below includes shipping. We kindly ask Members who wish to collect their order from Club to indicate their desired date in the order notes. Jasper on Terroir: Volnay 1er Cru
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW ‘Volnay is my wine,’ says Jasper Morris MW, our lead for this masterclass dedicated to one of Burgundy’s red-wine treasures; certainly, the fragrance and gossamer touch of Volnay can leave an indelible impression. Starting out among the vines, Morris unpicks the intricacies of Volnay’s sloped premier cru vineyards, some laced with limestone, others sitting on beds of clay. To further elucidate their distinguishing marks and individual charms, we’re introduced to a line-up of textbook Volnay from Morris’ most cherished spots including Clos des Chênes, Les Taillepieds, and the centenarian vines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon’s Champans. An intimate dinner showcasing the wines of Tasmania – Wednesday 29th October
£145.00Read moreOver the last decade or so, the wines of Tasmania have been receiving increasingly enthusiastic plaudits. The rise to prominence has coincided with a thirst for elegant, nuanced wines of restraint and character – qualities that the island’s cool climate is perfectly equipped to produce. Today, winemakers are queuing up to exploit the state’s island air, long summer days, wet winters and varied topography. But Tasmania’s vinous heritage dates back a generation or two earlier, to a handful of enterprising pioneers… Founded in 1958 – making it Tasmania’s second-oldest winery – Moorilla was transformed after its purchase in the ‘90s by colourful gambler David Walsh. While Walsh is perhaps best known for his installation of Hobart’s renowned – and somewhat risqué – Museum of Old and New Art, the bold, innovative wines made at the equally striking Morilla winery are arguably even more noteworthy. There, Canadian winemaker Conor van der Best harnesses grapes from two geographically distinct vineyards (Moorilla in the south, St Matthias in the north) to create three Tasmanian expressions of European styles: Cloth, Muse and Praxis. Domaine A, meanwhile, was the dream of Swiss expatriates Peter and Ruth Althaus, who, having searched far and wide for their perfect spot, settled on Stoney Vineyard (the oldest in Tasmania’s most noted wine region, Coal River Valley, planted in 1973). More than a few eyebrows were raised when they chose to champion Cabernet Sauvignon on the north-facing, ocean-influenced site. But with the vines receiving some of the longest daylight hours in Australia, and a cellar regime that can see a decade or more of ageing before release, the resultant wines show incredible subtlety and poise. It was an approach that carried Domaine A quietly to the forefront of Australian winemaking until Peter and Ruth’s retirement in 2018, when they handed over to the new custodians: the Walsh- van der Reest combo of Moorilla. We are delighted to welcome Conor van der Reest to the Club to host an intimate dinner featuring the wines of both producers. We invite you to join us to discover them for yourselves, introduced by the winemaker behind them, in what promises to be an enlightening evening. Our menu for the night: Welcome drink: Cloth, Late Disgorged Sparkling, Moorilla, Tasmania, Australia Foie gras & game terrine, fig chutney, sourdough 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, Praxis, Moorilla, Tasmania, Australia 2023 Pinot Noir, Praxis, Moorilla, Tasmania, Australia Stuffed cornfed chicken, salami, rainbow chard 2018 Pinot Noir, Muse, Moorilla, Tasmania, Australia 2018 Pinot Noir, Domaine A, Tasmania, Australia A selection of British & European cheeses 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Domaine A, Tasmania, Australia 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stoney Vineyard, Domaine A, Tasmania, AustraliaPlease reach out to [email protected] if you have any dietary requirements/allergies. Into the Vines Through the Wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia – Tuesday 21st February
£50.00Nudging up against Slovenia and Austria, Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s name has been made on the back of characterful, whistle-clean white wines which seem to directly echo the purity of the region’s mountainous terroir; however, this doesn’t even begin to tell the full story. Here you will also find generous and elegant reds, not to mention a swathe of idiosyncratic wine styles found nowhere else - anyone for a super-macerated, copper-coloured Pinot Grigio that’s been aged on its lees for two years? We hope Members will be similarly enthused and delighted to welcome Matteo Bellotto and Angelo Turi from Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s consorzio, as we taste the nuances of a region which plays host to 66 different varieties planted on a complex array of soils. Aided by in-depth data presented via Google Earth, Members will embark on a journey deep into the viticultural tradition of a region whose uniqueness is perfectly transmitted through its wines.
