Live From the Vines: C.V.N.E.
Hosted by Sarah Jane Evans MW & Victor Urrutia Back in 2003, ‘tyro’ would have been an apposite description of CVNE’s Victor Urrutia when, at the age of just 29, he accepted a request from his father to become the family company’s CEO. Nigh on two decades later, CVNE has been remoulded, tweaked and transformed into one of Spain’s titans, home to some of Rioja’s most famous wineries including Contino, Imperial and Viña Real. In conversation with Spanish expert Sarah Jane Evans MW, Urrutia talks about CVNE’s journey since it was born in 1879, the landmarks which have shaped it and, most importantly, those vineyards and wine which have been central to it all. To taste CVNE’s wines is to taste Rioja itself, and this compelling chapter of Live from the Vines comes with its own CVNE mini portfolio of wines, allowing you to sample the work of one of the world’s most distinguished producers alongside the very man in charge. Live From the Vines: Zambartas Wineries
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW, Marleen Zambartas, Marcos Zambartas & Christodoulos Karaolis Zambartas is a celebration of heritage and culture, of hands-dirty winemaking and lost varietals. Ostensibly founded in 2006 by Akis Zambartas, its beginnings go back to the 1980s when Akis began scouring his homeland of Cyprus for forgotten indigenous grapes. Today it is Akis’ winemaker son Marcos who runs the family winery alongside his wife Marleen. The pair discuss with Demetri Walters MW how those native varietals remain the driving force behind much of what they do, as illustrated by a selection of wines which include its flagship Margelina - a field blend fusion from one of Cyprus’ few remaining centenarian vineyards. Live From the Vines: Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
Hosted by Jane Anson & Nicolas Glumineau Universally regarded as one of the so-called ‘Super Seconds’ and with Latour as next-door neighbour, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande rubs shoulders both figuratively and geographically with Bordeaux’s First Growths. Its standing has been centuries in the making, during which time it has rarely changed hands, the most recent chapter beginning in 2007 when it was acquired by Champagne Louis Roederer. In conversation with Jane Anson, incumbent CEO and winemaker Nicolas Glumineau sketches out the rebirth of an estate whose reputation was founded on the acumen of a string of notable women whose influence reverberates to this day. Live From the Vines: Klein Constantia
Hosted by Hans Aström, Matt Day & Demetri Walters MW Klein Constantia has gone through many iterations since its genesis in 1685, but having seen itself referenced in works by both Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, this land has rarely been far away from centre stage. In addition to touching on its occasionally turbulent past, Demetri Walters MW delves into the soils and cellars of Klein Constantia with its managing director Hans Aström and winemaker Matt Day. Particular attention is paid to the legendary sweet wine, Vin de Constance, which was revived by the estate, has been instrumental in forging its reputation and marks the finale to the accompanying set of fabulous wines available to our digital members. Live From the Vines: Henschke
Hosted by Stephen Henschke, Prue Henschke & Richard Bampfield MW We enter at sunrise in Barossa’s Eden Valley, where the Henschke family has been making wine since Johann Christian Henschke planted his first vineyard in the early 1860s. Here we meet fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and viticulturist Prue with our host Richard Bampfield MW, as we discover their innovation and sustainability led approach in the vineyard. Live From the Vines: Sula Vineyards
Hosted by Rajeev Samant, Kerry Damskey & Steve Daniel Up until 1996, the Indian province of Nashik was virgin wine territory, yet today it is considered the wine capital of India. It was Sula’s founder Rajeev Samant who envisioned a new future for the region, planted its first wine grapes and triggered Nashik’s remarkable ascent to the pinnacle of Indian winemaking. This is what Sula does, it blazes trails, and this is a rare opportunity to go behind the cellar doors and taste a clutch of its wines, alongside not only Samant but also Sula’s master winemaker Kerry Damskey. Hear the reasoning behind that monumental leap of faith and what these figureheads of Sula see in their crystal ball, not just for Sula but also the entire Indian wine scene. It’s no doubt a future they will play a hand in mapping. Jasper on Vintage: 2015 – Red
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW 2015 ranks as one of Burgundy’s preeminent red vintages of recent times, with more than a smattering of stardust to be found along the region’s Route des Grand Crus. Yet, despite the lauded nature of the year, the empirical observations of Jasper Morris MW are no less crucial. In this episode, Morris delivers his verdict on 2015, cherry-picking a handful of wines from key appellations to make his case, while reviewing the vintage’s talking points, explain what to look out for, and how much staying power you can expect from this celebrated year. Live From the Vines: Álvaro Palacios – Bierzo
Hosted by Ricardo Perez Palacios & Ronan Sayburn MS Descendientes de J. Palacios is the work of two men: the esteemed Alvaro Palacios (who in the early 1990s lit up the wine world with his Priorat wines, most notably L’Ermita and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios. The pair joined forces towards the end of that same decade, launching Descendientes de J. Palacios in the then-obscure region of Bierzo in northeast Spain. Now a poorly guarded secret, Bierzo seems to have it all: old vines; a monastic winemaking heritage; poor soils on teeth-clenchingly steep slopes, and a relatively unheard of grape variety (Mencia) perfectly acclimatised to its surroundings Ronan Sayburn MS and Ricardo Pérez Palacios discuss the allure of Bierzo and the Mencia grape, and how this is realised in a portfolio of wines which is among the most desired in Spain and includes the majestic, prized Moncerbal. Deep Dive Bordeaux: The Terroirs of Saint-Émilion
Hosted by Jane Anson & Etienne Le Floc'h Saint-Emilion is renowned for its cool, clay and limestone soils which provide the perfect foil for the early-ripening Merlot, the signature grape of this striking corner of Bordeaux. However, closer inspection of its contours soon reveals that the geological makeup of this grand appellation is a mite more complex. Accompanying Jane Anson in her excavation of Saint-Emilion’s soils is Etienne Le Floc'h of wine merchant Etablissement Martin. Supported by a clutch of imperious wines from notable vintages, the pair debate the makeup of these terroirs, their intriguing individuality and how these characteristics are ultimately realised in these much-coveted bottles. Live From the Vines: Château Montrose
Hosted by Jane Anson & Hervé Berland We are on home turf for Jane Anson in this episode of Live From the Vines, as we meander to Saint-Estèphe to meet Hervé Berland, CEO of Château Montrose. Here we learn the story of three families, pioneers in the Médoc since 1815, each on a quest for excellence and legendary vintages, who built and shaped Château Montrose over the course of two centuries. We then look into the future through the eyes of current owners, Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who launched a seven year renovation of the estate, including a 1,000-m2, 11 metre-high main barrel hall for maturation in ideal conditions and 3,000 m2 of rooftop solar panels. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Pessac-Léognan
Hosted by Jane Anson The soils of Pessac-Léognan – awash with sand and gravel – arguably provided the genesis of what is today the world’s most celebrated and marketable region: Bordeaux. In 1305, the man who was to become Pope Pape Clément V planted the first vineyard on the estate now known as Château Pape Clément, while in the mid-17th century, the then owners of Château Haut Brion - the only non-Médoc classed growth and where grapes have been cultivated since Roman times – opened an eponymous tavern in London (the Pontac’s Head) as a means of promoting and selling its wines. This is an extraordinary opportunity to taste from these two historic properties as well as four of its esteemed peers. Lead by Bordeaux specialist Jane Anson, this tour of Pessac examines its history, climate and terroir which have coalesced to create not only phenomenal red wines but superlative whites as well. Live From the Vines: Château Haut-Bailly
Hosted by Véronique Sanders, Jane Anson & Gabriel Vialard Château Haut-Bailly possesses a multi-layered backstory, and its territory was regarded as a prime spot for growing vines as far back as the mid-15th century. Today it stands as one of Bordeaux’s most composed yet progressive producers, with 2021 seeing it cut the ribbon on a spectacular new cellar set into the landscape on the edge of its vineyards. Join Bordeaux expert Jane Anson, Haut-Bailly’s general manager Véronique Sanders, and its technical director Gabriel Vialard as they discuss its history, perpetual evolution and, of course, its wines, as they taste though a half-dozen flight of its grand vin comprising vintages stretching back to 1989. Live From the Vines: Rippon Vineyard & Winery
Hosted by Nick Mills & Jo Mills Rippon’s home of Wanaka on New Zealand’s South Island would deserve to sit on any rollcall listing wine’s most dramatic landscapes. This pocket of Central Otago has been under the stewardship of the Mills family since 1912, although it wasn’t until the mid-1970s that thoughts turned – albeit tentatively - to growing vines, when Rolf Mills laid down a few experimental rows. Join and taste alongside winemaker Nick Mills and his wife Jo (Rippon’s director), as they illustrate Rippon’s evolution from its speculative beginnings to the prime, unirrigated, biodynamic estate it is today. Hear how their predecessors had the freedom to plant with wild abandon, meaning anything and everything went into the ground, before successive generations sorted the wheat from the chaff and settled on the six varieties they grow today.
