Deep Dive Bordeaux: The Terroirs of Saint-Émilion
Hosted by Jane Anson & Etienne Le Floc'h Saint-Emilion is renowned for its cool, clay and limestone soils which provide the perfect foil for the early-ripening Merlot, the signature grape of this striking corner of Bordeaux. However, closer inspection of its contours soon reveals that the geological makeup of this grand appellation is a mite more complex. Accompanying Jane Anson in her excavation of Saint-Emilion’s soils is Etienne Le Floc'h of wine merchant Etablissement Martin. Supported by a clutch of imperious wines from notable vintages, the pair debate the makeup of these terroirs, their intriguing individuality and how these characteristics are ultimately realised in these much-coveted bottles. Live From the Vines: Château Montrose
Hosted by Jane Anson & Hervé Berland We are on home turf for Jane Anson in this episode of Live From the Vines, as we meander to Saint-Estèphe to meet Hervé Berland, CEO of Château Montrose. Here we learn the story of three families, pioneers in the Médoc since 1815, each on a quest for excellence and legendary vintages, who built and shaped Château Montrose over the course of two centuries. We then look into the future through the eyes of current owners, Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who launched a seven year renovation of the estate, including a 1,000-m2, 11 metre-high main barrel hall for maturation in ideal conditions and 3,000 m2 of rooftop solar panels. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Pessac-Léognan
Hosted by Jane Anson The soils of Pessac-Léognan – awash with sand and gravel – arguably provided the genesis of what is today the world’s most celebrated and marketable region: Bordeaux. In 1305, the man who was to become Pope Pape Clément V planted the first vineyard on the estate now known as Château Pape Clément, while in the mid-17th century, the then owners of Château Haut Brion - the only non-Médoc classed growth and where grapes have been cultivated since Roman times – opened an eponymous tavern in London (the Pontac’s Head) as a means of promoting and selling its wines. This is an extraordinary opportunity to taste from these two historic properties as well as four of its esteemed peers. Lead by Bordeaux specialist Jane Anson, this tour of Pessac examines its history, climate and terroir which have coalesced to create not only phenomenal red wines but superlative whites as well. Live From the Vines: Château Haut-Bailly
Hosted by Véronique Sanders, Jane Anson & Gabriel Vialard Château Haut-Bailly possesses a multi-layered backstory, and its territory was regarded as a prime spot for growing vines as far back as the mid-15th century. Today it stands as one of Bordeaux’s most composed yet progressive producers, with 2021 seeing it cut the ribbon on a spectacular new cellar set into the landscape on the edge of its vineyards. Join Bordeaux expert Jane Anson, Haut-Bailly’s general manager Véronique Sanders, and its technical director Gabriel Vialard as they discuss its history, perpetual evolution and, of course, its wines, as they taste though a half-dozen flight of its grand vin comprising vintages stretching back to 1989. The wines we will taste: Château Haut-Bailly, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan 1989 Château Haut-Bailly, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan 2016 Château Haut-Bailly, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan 2014 Château Haut-Bailly, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan 2010 Château Haut-Bailly, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan 2008 Château Haut-Bailly, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan 2006Read more -

Deep Dive Bordeaux: Dry white vs Sweet white
Hosted by Jane Anson & Demetri Walters MW Assisted by a terrific line-up of wines including Château Climens, Château Guiraud and the acclaimed Château d'Yquem, Jane Anson and Demetri Walters MW continue our forensic investigation into all things Bordeaux by taking a close look at the paler side of the world’s best-dressed region. Ranging from the exhilaratingly dry through to the indulgently sticky, our duo talk grapes, methods, properties and histories as they outline why Bordeaux’s white wines can stand just as tall as their red counterparts. Live From the Vines: Rippon Vineyard & Winery
Hosted by Nick Mills & Jo Mills Rippon’s home of Wanaka on New Zealand’s South Island would deserve to sit on any rollcall listing wine’s most dramatic landscapes. This pocket of Central Otago has been under the stewardship of the Mills family since 1912, although it wasn’t until the mid-1970s that thoughts turned – albeit tentatively - to growing vines, when Rolf Mills laid down a few experimental rows. Join and taste alongside winemaker Nick Mills and his wife Jo (Rippon’s director), as they illustrate Rippon’s evolution from its speculative beginnings to the prime, unirrigated, biodynamic estate it is today. Hear how their predecessors had the freedom to plant with wild abandon, meaning anything and everything went into the ground, before successive generations sorted the wheat from the chaff and settled on the six varieties they grow today. In Good Spirits: Cambridge Distillery
Hosted by William Lowe MW, Alex Rushmer & Kiki Hopkins Achieving Master of Wine status necessitates sacrifice, intellect, drive and a thick skin; to do so when you’ve already gained your Master Distiller wings suggests an individual of notable propulsion. William Lowe MW completed the set in 2020 - becoming the first person to hold both – and he brings the same ‘no limits’ attitude to Cambridge Distillery which he founded with his wife, Lucy. Renowned for using only fresh ingredients and treating each botanical delicately and individually, Lowe takes Kiki Hopkins around the Cambridge Gin Lab, unpacking the formulas and art behind premium gin production. There’s time to concoct a distillate from a bunch of fresh lemon verbena leaves, before the pair sit down with chef Alex Rushmer and taste through a medley of Cambridge Distillery’s diverse creations. Live From the Vines: Hirsch Vineyards
Hosted by Jasmine Hirsch & Elaine Brown When David Hirsch purchased a sheep ranch in 1978 on the Sonoma Coast, he was not sure what to do with the 1000 acres he had just acquired, in a remote location close to the ocean, surrounded by red wood trees. By 1980, the first vines were grown and the fruit sold, but no wine was to be produced until the early 90’s, when he was approached by wine makers of some renown seeking cooler vineyards closer to the coast. By 2000 David had caught the vinous bug, transforming into a fully dynamic winery producing 6000-8000 cases of wine a year. Wander amongst the vines with us in an episode where we learn more about this extraordinary story with Jasmine Hirsch and Elaine Brown. Hosted by Noelia Orts, Alvaro Espinosa & Ronan Sayburn MS Emiliana opened its doors in 1998 and since day one has been a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, not only in its native Chile but on the global stage as well. One of its founders, the perpetually effervescent Alvaro Espinoza, was the trailblazer for biodynamics in Chile, and today it is Emiliana’s brilliant Noelia Orts who maintains the house’s tradition as being a place of prodigious winemaking. Joined by Ronan Sayburn MS, the trio discuss why Chile is heralded as a vinegrowing Shangri-La, and embark on a tasting tour of Emiliana’s vineyards which wind through the length of the country. Jasper on Vintage: 2017 – Red
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Mother Nature takes Burgundy’s vignerons on a white-knuckle ride at the best of times, and in 2016 she was in full flow, with frost driving down yields and leading to an army of jittery winemakers the following year, not least as it appeared 2017 was heading in the same direction. Fortunately, the vintage altered course and the wines of 2017 have been widely lauded, and while it’s the whites which have largely taken the glory, an abundance of terroir-driven, light on their feet and engaging reds have emerged from the year. Bringing his reservoirs of wisdom and expertise to bear, Jasper Morris MW marks your card for this fabulous vintage, adding flesh to the headlines and zeroing in on the appellations to note, proving once again he is your first port of call before any cellars are stocked. The Expert Series: France – Savoie
Hosted by Wink Lorch & Rosemary George MW Rosemary George MW and wine writer Wink Lorch continue their investigation into France’s eastern edges with this expert sketch of Savoie. This is largely white wine territory although varieties of both hues thrive here, and while grapes such as Jacquère, Altesse and the red Mondeuse are far from international celebrities, Savoie’s Alpine surroundings are argued to deliver a tangible freshness to the wines, with the winemaking suitably well harnessed as to celebrate this innate quality. George and Lorch discuss the idiosyncrasies of this picture-postcard region, ably supported by a flight of hand-picked examples which throw contemporary Savoie into sharp relief. The Expert Series: Introduction to the Loire Valley – Red
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW The Loire River is France’s longest, beginning in the country’s heated south then rising north before abruptly coursing west and making its way to the Atlantic. It is on this last stretch where you will find – on both banks – some of France’s most honoured wine regions yet, conversely, some of its most underrated reds. The effortlessly food-friendly Cabernet Franc is the main player here and understandably takes centre stage as Demetri Walters MW concludes his Loire Valley profile. However, as Walters digs into the region’s winemaking heritage and highlights some of today’s leading practitioners, he also reveals more about the lesser-spotted Sancerre rouge, and opens a wine made from Grolleau, historically a high-yielding, workhorse grape, which has been transformed into anything but by one of our featured producers. Live From the Vines: Urla Winery
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW & Can Ortabas Established in 2006 by Can Ortabaș, Urla Winery - on Turkey’s Aegean coast - is something of a young buck, yet its inspiration and true genesis stretches back over 3,000 years, to a time which saw the planting on his property the ruined, terraced vineyards that Ortabaș chanced upon in 2000. Today, Urla Winery is one of the Aegean’s most dynamic producers: forever forward thinking, while at the same time drawing on its homeland’s winemaking heritage, even reviving its ancient varietals. Hosted by Master of Wine Demetri Walters alongside Can Ortabaș, this tasting is a rare opportunity to delve into the distinctive, characterful wines crafted by a winery which represents part of a new wave of Mediterranean ambition.
