Movie night – ‘Sparkling: The Story of Champagne’ – Wednesday 18th February (NM)
£55.00Read moreChampagne rarely needs an introduction, but its story - and the people behind it - is far richer than even its finest cuvées. Sparkling: The Story of Champagne is a beautifully observed documentary that travels beyond the cellars and grandes marques to explore how one region came to define celebration itself.
Filmed on location across Champagne and beyond, the film features a diverse cast of voices, including Vitalie Taittinger, Bruno Paillard and Stephen Fry and takes viewers inside some of the most storied houses in the region: Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon, Pommery, Bollinger and Pol Roger, alongside a new generation of English sparkling wine producers, from Bolney to Balfour, Squerryes to Sugrue. Members may also recognise a familiar setting. 67 Pall Mall served as one of the filming locations, where Sir Nicholas Soames spoke of his grandfather Sir Winston Churchill’s enduring connection to Pol Roger. The film has been warmly received on release, described by the New York Times as 'a lush valentine to French bubbly' while the Chicago Sun-Times noted that it is 'nearly impossible to watch Sparkling and not suddenly have the urge to sip a glass or two.' We intend to lean into that temptation. Join us for a relaxed evening in the Club, with popcorn to hand and a selection of sparkling wines poured during the film - including a range of cuvées from several of the houses featured on screen - proof that some stories are best told with a glass in hand.A short preview of the film can be seen here.

The Barolo Boys are back in town – Wednesday 28th January (PL)
£75.00 – £90.00Price range: £75.00 through £90.00According to the local Consorzio, there are fewer than 100 producers making a Barolo del Comune, the ‘village’ wine of the famous Piedmont DOCG. Our Head of Wine Operations Federico Moccia and his friend and former colleague Nelson Pari, aka The Barolo Boys, feel that figure should be far higher for a wine style they feel represents the essence of the region. In January, Fede and Nelson are back for another Barolo del Comune tasting to complement their annual regional report, this year exploring the tricky 2022 vintage through eight fantastic wines spanning six different communes. The Barolo Boys believe that the future of Barolo lies in adopting a Burgundian approach, starting with an emphasis on village wines. This will require the efforts of producers, importers, sommeliers and consumers alike to understand the importance of the category. Fede and Nelson are leading the way, this year through the lens of one of the more challenging recent vintages. ‘2022 is, on paper, one of the most disastrous vintages in the history of Barolo, featuring the highest level of drought recorded in the region,’ says Nelson. ‘Nonetheless, the wines are great – less tannins, less acidity, with a greater focus on aromas and, thankfully, not as much “warmth” as you might expect. The place might be the same but the winemakers are not the same ones as struggled to deal with similarly hot years in 2003 and 2017, meaning this is another terroir-driven vintage to follow on from the magical trio of ‘19, ‘20 and ‘21.’ Come and meet the Barolo Boys and discover more about the vintage – and the region – in what is always a fun event. The wines we will be tasting: 2022 Barolo del Comune di Verduno, Diego Morra 2022 Barolo del Comune di Barolo, Famiglia Anselma 2022 Barolo del Comune di La Morra, Cristian Boffa 2022 Barolo del Comune di Castiglione Falletto, Vecchie Viti, Roccheviberti 2022 Barolo del Comune di Castiglione Falletto, Boroli 2022 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba, Galarin 2022 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, Francesco Versio 2022 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, Ettore Germano Wednesday 28th January St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. Amarone, Bardolino and Soave with Guerrieri Rizzardi – Tuesday 21st October (Non-Member)
£75.00 – £90.00Price range: £75.00 through £90.00The Veneto is a wonderfully eclectic part of the Italian wine scene, yielding wines as diverse as Amarone and Prosecco, Bardolino and Soave. Few producers, though, tend to make them all… Guerrieri Rizzardi is a historic estate, established through the union of two noble families – the Guerrieris of Bardolino and the Rizzardis of Valpolicella – with winemaking roots dating back to the 15th century. Today, it remains family-owned and run, with a particular focus on sustainable, terroir-driven winemaking across its three estates in Valpolicella, Bardolino and Soave. The resultant range spans light, aromatic whites to robust reds, with particular acclaim for its Amarone della Valpolicella. The family vineyards take in some of the most prestigious appellations of the Veneto, including the historic Clos Roareti vineyard in Valpolicella. The winery emphasises minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar, aiming to balance environmental stewardship with the production of expressive, ageworthy wines that showcase the Veneto’s rich heritage and varied microclimates. Irish-born Daniel Stewart moved to Italy in 2013 and is one of the directors of the historic house, based at its main winery in Bardolino. We invite you to join him to discover these terroir-driven, classically authentic wines. The wines we will be tasting: 2024 Soave Classico, Costeggiola, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2024 Lugana, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2023 Montebaldo Bardolino, Delara, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2023 Bardolino Classico, Cuvée XV, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2019 Amarone della Valpolicalla Classico, 3 Cru, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2019 Amarone della Valpolicalla Classico Riserva, Villa Rizzardi, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2015 Amarone della Valpolicalla Classico Riserva, Villa Rizzardi, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2015 Amarone della Valpolicalla Classico Riserva, Calcarole, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2005 Amarone della Valpolicalla Classico Riserva, Calcarole, Guerrieri Rizzardi 2020 Recioto di Soave Classico, Rizzardi Tuesday 21st October St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. Why clones make a difference in the vineyard – Friday 26th September (non-member)
£75.00 – £90.00Price range: £75.00 through £90.00We all know that the vagaries of terroir mean Chardonnay grown in Burgundy will taste very different from Chardonnay grown in California. But even within the same vineyard, the planting of varying clones means the same grape variety can yield very different characteristics. Chardonnay grown around the world is genetically identical, but develops clonal variations according to the local terroir. These mutations can alter the physiology of the vine, creating differing foliage types, grape cluster/berry sizes, skin-juice ratio, sugar/acid/tannin levels, colour etc etc. It is these variations that lend individual clones their character, which shines through in the eventual wine – leading wine geeks to get very excited about wines made from the Gingin or Pommard clones, for example. We are delighted, then, to welcome founder of the West London Wine School Jimmy Smith to make sense of all this in his signature accessible, inclusive and entertaining style. With fellow educator and winemaker Sam Hill, he will explain how clones work and why they’re important, all by way of live examples in the form of the debut release of clonal wines from their Surrey Hills winery, Beare Green. Jimmy and Sam have meticulously researched the impact of clonal selection of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to produce a range of exceptionally high-quality wines. Working with some of the UK's top growers across the South of England, the winery crafts small-batch wines which, beyond the all-important clonal selection, harness natural yeast fermentation and minimal intervention amid a range of other winemaking innovations. All will be revealed on the night – so join us to tune in and geek out (in a very non-geeky way). The wines we will be tasting: 2023 Dio Bacchus, Surrey Hills (glass on arrival) 2023 Chardonnay, Thakeham Vineyard (Clone 121), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 95), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 96), West Sussex 2023 Chardonnay, Clonal Blend, West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 777), West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Pulborough Vineyard (Clone 114), West Sussex 2023 Pinot Noir, Clonal Blend, West Sussex Friday 26th September Lutyens Room 18:30 - Welcome Drink 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. 2021 Barolo tasting with Federico Moccia and Nelson Pari – Wednesday 22nd January (Non-Member)
£75.00 – £90.00Price range: £75.00 through £90.00Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageAccording to the local Consorzio, there are fewer than 100 producers making a Barolo del Comune, the ‘village’ wine of the famous Piedmont region. Head Sommelier Federico Moccia and Nelson Pari, aka The Barolo Boys, feel the figure highlights the rather overlooked state of this style within the region.
So in January, Fede and Nelson are back for another Barolo del Comune tasting to complement their annual report, this year exploring the 2021 vintage through seven exemplary producers. The Barolo Boys believe that the future of Barolo lies in adopting a Burgundian approach, with an emphasis on village wines. This will require the efforts of producers, importers, sommeliers and consumers alike to understand the importance of the category, and highlighting what the French would call the local ‘cru’. Fede and Nelson are leading the way… The 2021 vintage will be remembered for its mild, dry winter, late budding, and frost challenges, with a warm spring and summer preceding the early-October harvest. Overall, say Fede and Nelson, the vintage offers a classic style, with much to admire for aficionados of traditional Barolo – wines with ‘tension and muscle’, adds Nelson – amid a warmer interpretation of this celebrated wine compared to the cooler 2016 and more balanced 2019. Come and meet the Barolo Boys and discover more about the region – and the latest vintage. The wines we will be tasting: 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno, Diego Morra 2021 Barolo del Comune di Barolo, Marchesi di Barolo 2021 Barolo del Comune di La Morra, Gianni Gagliardo 2021 Barolo del Comune di Castiglione Falletto, Monchiero 2021 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba, Castello di Perno 2021 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba, Domenico Clerico 2021 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, Ettore Germano Please note that we now offer a tasting board of charcuterie, cheese, olives and smoked crispy chickpeas to accompany your tasting. Live From the Vines: Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm
Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW, Katharina Prüm & Mihailo Martinovic Over 100 vintages on the clock yet less than a handful of careful (family) owners, J. J. (Joh. Jos.) Prüm is an object lesson in the boons of succession and continuity. To state that J. J. Prüm creates some of the world’s most exquisite and sought-after Rieslings is not throwaway applause, but an argument borne out by decades of critical glory, not to mention the going price for its wines, most notably those from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. This renowned site features prominently in the line-up of wines enjoyed here by Richard Bampfield MW and J. J. Prüm’s owner Katherine Prüm (and available as a tasting kit to digital members), as they discuss her antecedents, the family’s dedication to Riesling, and Prüm’s next steps. Hosted by Duncan Savage Duncan Savage’s Sauvignon sleight of hand puts him on a whole other level with the grape according to wine legend and fellow South African, Eben Sadie. Seeing as Savage worked under the peerless Didier Daganeau in the Loire Valley and was once winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards - whose Sauvignons and Sémillons under his watch hoovered up awards – his breeding is certainly impeccable. Yet there are many more strings to his bow, and here he introduces us to the full repertoire from his function-over-form urban winery, from which comes some of South Africa’s hottest tickets including Cinsault, Syrah and blends of both hues.
