Chateau Musar back to 1970, with family member Marc Hochar – Thursday 6th November
£125.00 – £140.00Price range: £125.00 through £140.00Lebanon’s Chateau Musar is one of the world's most singular wineries – a truly legendary name making uncompromising, fascinating wines, often against the odds. Its history dates back to 1930, when Gaston Hochar planted his first vines in the Bekaa Valley following a holiday to Bordeaux. His son Serge went further, studying in Bordeaux and, on his return, encouraging his father to step aside so that he could make the wine his way. He went on to lead the property for over half a century, along the way becoming the first inductee to Decanter Magazine’s Hall of Fame, in 1984. That award recognised Hochar’s commitment to continued production during Lebanon’s Civil War (1975-1990). Serge would harvest the grapes when the shelling paused, while their transit to the winery, on the other side of Beirut, took as long as avoiding militia check-points permitted (sometimes days). The struggle has been lent added resonance in recent years, when Lebanon has again found itself in the midst of conflict. Musar’s signature red is an unusual blend of old-vine, low-yielding Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, fermented in concrete, aged in oak for two years, then blended before returning to vat and, after bottling, being aged for another five years before release. The whole approach is low-interventionist and the result truly unique – and very long-lived. Alongside six vintages of the red, we will try some of Musar’s other wines, including the white, made in an oxidative fashion from ancient Lebanese grape varieties, which is just as unusual and ageworthy as the red. The relatively recent Musar Jeune range is the polar opposite – unoaked, fresh-tasting and ready to drink on release. After Serge’s sad passing a decade ago, today his sons Marc and Gaston are the third-generation leaders of the estate. We are thrilled to welcome Marc to the Club for what is sure to be a fascinating evening. Five-vintage masterclass of Château d’Yquem going back to 1985 – Monday 17th February
£195.00Some wines need little introduction. And so it is with Château d’Yquem, undoubtedly the most famous – and in the eyes of most people, the finest – sweet wine in the world. We are thrilled, then, to announce a rather special tasting of the Sauternes 1er cru classé superieur, hosted by the property’s estate manager, and spanning five vintages of the grand vin, going back to 1985, as well as the dry wine, Y. There is little to say about Yquem that hasn’t already been said, but perhaps this note on the 1990 (also included in the tasting) from our good friend Jane Anson will help set the scene: ‘Exuberant, concentrated and luscious; a beautiful wine that still has decades ahead of it and clearly shows why Yquem stands in its own category in the appellation.’ Instead, then, we’ll tell you about Lorenzo Pasquini, Yquem’s estate manager and our host for the evening. Lorenzo arrived at Yquem in 2020 having worked at Robert Mondavi winery in California, Cheval des Andes in Argentina and Châteaux Palmer and Giscours in Bordeaux. The advice he received from Yquem president Pierre Lurton on taking the reins? ‘Never compromise on quality.’ ‘Yquem is a very emotional wine, very complex but very easy to love,’ he says. ‘In order to maintain it at its own rank, every year we have to find the 0.1% improvement that will make the difference.’ Join us to find out how they do it, and for a rare opportunity to taste these wines. Please note, we expect this event to be popular, and early booking is recommended. The wines we will be tasting: 2017 Y d’Yquem (Ygrec), Bordeaux Superieur Blanc 2022 Château d’Yquem, 1er Cru Superieur, Sauternes 2010 Château d’Yquem, 1er Cru Superieur, Sauternes 2005 Château d’Yquem, 1er Cru Superieur, Sauternes 1990 Château d’Yquem, 1er Cru Superieur, Sauternes 1985 Château d’Yquem, 1er Cru Superieur, Sauternes Monday 17th February St. James’s Room 19:30 – Welcome reception 20:00 – Masterclass begins 21:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 5 days before the event. La Rioja Alta Gran Reservas (and more) going back to 1985 – Wednesday 11th June
£125.00 – £140.00Price range: £125.00 through £140.00Amid all the talk of modernisation in Rioja, few bodegas are more resolutely traditional than the venerable La Rioja Alta. Described vividly by Decanter magazine as ‘a maze of tunnels and barrel rooms… dark, slightly faded, with row upon row of fragrant oak barrels and dusty, be-cobwebbed bottles stacked in every conceivable corner’, the Haro winery stands as testament to La Rioja Alta’s commitment to ageworthy Reservas and Gran Reservas, matured over long periods in American oak. Indeed such is the importance it attaches to ageing that the winery has its own in-house cooperage to season the wood and craft the barrels to its precise specifications. That heritage is furthered by the fact that descendants of the original founding families remain involved, and we are delighted to welcome the current president, fifth-generation Guillermo de Aranzabal, to showcase both new releases and library vintages of La Rioja Alta’s two famous Gran Reservas. The ‘904’ is an elegant blend of higher-altitude Tempranillo and Graciano aged for a minimum of four years in American oak and made only around three times per decade, while the more powerful ‘890’, based around 95% Tempranillo, is aged for six years in oak (and, like the ‘904’, further in bottle) before release. The estate isn’t wholly wedded to tradition, though, and we will also try the first release of El Camino, a single-vineyard wine from its Torre de Ona project, not yet in the UK, and made in a notably more modern style, in line with the Rioja DOCa’s new terroir-driven approach. In addition, there will be the chance to enjoy wines from the group’s ventures in Ribera del Duero and Rías Baixas, to where it expanded in 1990 and 1988, respectively. All in all, this promises to be a very special evening – do join us. The wines we will be tasting: 2021 Albariño 'Lindeiros', Lagar de Fornelos, Rias Baixas, Spain 2019 Áster, Finca El Otero, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2021 El Camino, Torre de Ona, Rioja, Spain 2019 Viña Ardanza, Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain 2016 ‘904’ Rioja Gran Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain 2011 ‘890’ Rioja Gran Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain 2001 ‘904’ Rioja Gran Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain 2001 ‘890’ Rioja Gran Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain 1995 ‘904’ Rioja Gran Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain 1985 ‘890’ Rioja Gran Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Spain St James’s Room Wednesday 11th June 18:30 Welcome Drink 19:00 Masterclass starts 20:30 Masterclass ends Please note that we now offer a tasting board of charcuterie, cheese, olives and smoked crispy chickpeas to accompany your tasting. Israel – The Rising Star with Tal Sunderland-Cohen – Tuesday 14th March
£70.00Tal Sunderland-Cohen is back at 67 Pall Mall for another evening of education, anecdotes and fine wines! Come and explore why Oz Clarke and many other wine aficionados have called Israel the “Rising star of the wine world”. Wine has been produced in Israel of thousands of years; but traditionally this was sweet, sacramental wines. Over the past few decades, the public perception of Israeli wines has shifted dramatically around the world, thanks to the success of both large and boutique producers who are pushing boundaries in winemaking and experimenting with indigenous wine varietals. Where did the modern Israeli wine industry come from? What makes it unique? Where are the best wines being crafted, and who are the star wine-makers? As usual, Tal has chosen a wide-ranging selection of excellent, interesting wines that represent some of the best expressions available in Israel today: 2020 Segal winery, Levant Judean Hills Native Marawi 2020 Feldstein Dabouki Alona Valley 2019 Gvaot winery, Hamdani-Jandali Blend 2019 Teperberg winery, Essence Chardonnay 2019 2022 Agur winery, Rose 2020 Barkan Vineyards, Classic Argaman 2021 Pinto winery, Malbec Desert Wine 2021 Dalton Winery, Asufa Majestic 2019 Gush Etzion Winery Lone Oak Tree Reserve Cabernet Franc 2017 Domaine Netofa Winery, Dor Syrah Tuesday 14th March St. James’s Room 18:30 – Glass on arrival 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. Brunello 2018 Walkaround Tasting with Honest Grapes – Wednesday 15th February
£30.00Honest Grapes and 67 Pall Mall are delighted to welcome you for a walk-around tasting to sample some elegant 2018 Brunello wines available En Primeur, or as the Italians say, AntePrima. We are honoured to be joined by some of the most prestigious Brunello winemakers, who will provide some insight into this unique vintage. Attendees will leave fueled with an appreciation of Brunello wines and an understanding of their qualities. After the baking and arid 2017 vintage, 2018 was cooler and damper, yielding wines stylistically recalling an era prior to the recent solar years, with generally impressive results. Vinous’ Eric Guido has described the best wines as “Burgundian”, with “vividly dark, ripe fruit, balanced acidity and refined tannins”. He also notes that in 2018 the “quality of mid-level wines is higher than in the past” and we have a selection which, bright, fresh and supple, will delight on release, whilst the top wines “will overperform, overdeliver and thrill”. In short, this is an absolutely charming vintage with immediate hedonic appeal and there are a number of superb wines from our favourite growers that we cannot wait to share with you. We will also have a couple of late release and Riserva 2017s plus a selection of Rosso 2021s, increasingly the best value wines in Italy. Producers represented include Valdicava, Giodo, Castello Romitorio, Mastrojanni, Argiano, Siro Pacenti, Le Gode and Patrizia Cencioni. Walkaround tasting of Swiss wines – Monday 10th November
£65.00 – £75.00Price range: £65.00 through £75.00Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageFor one night only, we are bringing the Alps to the St. James’s Room for a wide-ranging, walkaround tasting of Swiss wines. Members will have the opportunity to sample around 100 wines from more than 20 producers, representing all six of Switzerland’s wine regions. Several of the winemakers will be there in person to share their stories and guide you through the country’s remarkable Alpine terroir.
The evening forms part of Swiss Wine Week London, organised by Swiss Wine Ambassador and Club Member Simon Hardy DipWSET on behalf of Swiss Wine Promotion, who will also be in attendance. A selection of authentic Swiss cheeses will be served alongside the wines, completing the Alpine experience.
Members can expect to explore Switzerland’s diversity of grapes - from native classics like Chasselas and Cornalin, to rare discoveries such as Räuschling and Galotta, as well as familiar varieties including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot. The tasting offers a glimpse into Switzerland’s ‘heroic viticulture’ - where steep slopes, mountain microclimates and craftsmanship combine to produce wines of exceptional purity and character.
Switzerland’s vineyards are roughly the same size as Alsace but, as the country consumes almost all the wine it produces, only a small proportion makes it to the rest of the world. We are proud to have long offered a wide selection of Swiss wines here in London, while our Alpine home in Verbier has one of the most comprehensive lists of Swiss wines to be found.
Members will also have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the newly published Switzerland – The Smart Traveller’s Wine Guide from the Académie du Vin Library, co-authored by Simon Hardy and Marc Checkley. Copies can be collected at the tasting, where both authors will be present to personally sign your book.
We invite Members to explore Switzerland’s signature Alpine terroir... Wines from the following regions and producers will be present on the night: VALAIS - Abbet-Vins - Cave des Amandiers - Domaine Jean-René Germanier - Domaine Chappaz - Domaine du Mont d’Or - Histoire d’Enfer VAUD - Château de Châtagneréaz - Château Maison Blanche - Henri Badoux - Pura Me Movent GENEVA - Domaine des Röthis THREE LAKES - Grillette Domaine de Cressier DEUTSCHSCHWEIZ - Bechtel Weine (Zürich) - Bioweingut Roland und Karin Lenz (Thurgau) - Cottinenelli Weinbau (Graubünden - Georg Schlegel - Weingut zur Alten Post (Graubünden) - Weingut Bad Osterfingen (Schaffhausen) - Weingut Pircher (Zürich) TICINO - Cantina Il Cavaliere - Chiericati Vini - Gialdi Vini Monday 10th November St. James's Room 18:30 - Tasting begins 20:30 - Tasting ends Please note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 5 working days before the event. Napa icon Opus One going back to 1990 – Tuesday 14th October
£550.00 – £565.00Price range: £550.00 through £565.00Few wines in recent history have generated such headlines as Opus One did when the inaugural vintage was released in 1980. Founded two years previously, the venture was a groundbreaking collaboration between two titans of the wine world: Baron Philippe de Rothschild, proprietor of Château Mouton-Rothschild, and Robert Mondavi, the pioneer of modern Californian wine. While today, cross-country collaborations are more common, in 1980, such an initiative was almost unheard of – and marked an astonishing leap of faith by the Bordeaux first growth. The pair’s shared vision was to create a single, ultra-premium wine that would marry the finesse and tradition of Bordeaux with the ripeness and energy of California fruit. That fruit was sourced from Bordeaux varieties among Mondavi’s holdings in the famous To Kalon vineyard, along with other top Napa Valley sites, while the famous winery was sited conspicuously just off the famous Highway 29, in the heart of the region’s prime Cabernet Sauvignon territory. Opus One’s philosophy has remained consistent ever since – to produce a single flagship Bordeaux blend each vintage, aged extensively in French oak and designed for both early approachability and long-term cellaring. We are thrilled to welcome Opus One CEO Christopher Lynch to the Club for an eight-vintage vertical tasting of this storied wine, including three vintages from the 1990s, each served in Imperial (6-litre) format. These Imperials have been held in our reserves since 2018, sourced directly from California for an occasion as special as this. Join us for what promises to be a very special evening, as we continue our line-up of headline-making events to mark our 10th anniversary. Rhône masterclass with Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe and more – Tuesday 27th May
£95.00 – £110.00Price range: £95.00 through £110.00Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe stands as one of the undisputed greats of the Southern Rhône. The wines coming from the famous ‘Plateau de la Crau’ exemplify the generosity and complexity of top Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the famous galet stones covering the vineyards as far as the eye can see. This is real Grenache country – and it has been expertly managed by the Brunier family since 1891, with brothers Daniel and Frédéric Brunier at the helm since the early 1980s. In addition to their sought-after Châteauneuf-du-Papes, the Bruniers have, since 1998, also owned what is widely regarded as the finest estate in Gigondas – Domaine les Pallières. Beautifully-aged vines, reaching back over 100 years in some cases, are grown in a hidden, elevated bowl, a terroir that yields a perfect balance of richness and elegance. We are delighted to welcome Daniel Brunier to the Club for what promises to be a fantastic session covering all things Châteauneuf and Gigondas. A man with decades of winemaking under his belt, Daniel knows all too well the joys (and risks) of making wine in the Southern Rhône. He will present a range of wines from the two estates, spanning various styles, to illustrate how Vieux Télégraphe has, over the last century, established itself as one of France’s greatest estates. Pierre de Lhomme, a rich draper founded the vineyard in 1552 in the prized Margaux commune and today it is owned by Dennis, Derk & Valerie Albada Jelgersma, the children of the late Eric Albada Jelgersma, the charismatic Dutch entrepreneur who was a renowned art collector and wine lover. Situated in the heart of the Margaux appellation, this third growth estate has undergone massive change under the direction of General Manager, Alexander Van Beek, a fellow dutchman, who arrived at the property in 1995 at the young age of 24. Since the purchase considerable investment has been made. Following an extensive terroir study there has been considerable replanting with a change from 60% Merlot in 1995 to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon today. Alexander will conduct a tasting spanning the 20 years of the property. A date not to be missed by any Bordeaux lover. Long Live Brunello 2015 masterclass with Federico Moccia & Nelson Pari – Tuesday 20th May
£150.00 – £165.00Price range: £150.00 through £165.00Throughout the year, we will be taking regular looks back at our birth year of 2015, as we celebrate 10 years of 67 Pall Mall here in London in a series of events. For Brunello di Montalcino, the 2015 vintage was nothing short of exceptional. Unlike the cool and wet 2014 season, 2015 benefited from a warm, dry summer, delivering perfectly ripened grapes with depth, balance and structure. This has resulted in wines with generous fruit, refined tannins and remarkable ageing potential – hailed as one of the standout vintages of the decade. We are delighted, then, to revive the popular ‘Long Live Brunello’ event series, hosted by Head Sommelier Federico Moccia and his friend and former colleague Nelson Pari. They will be joined by Andrea Polidoro, head winemaker at Cupano and a champion of ageworthy Brunello, for an evening celebrating the 2015 vintage. The evening will take the form of an interactive masterclass, offering Members the chance to taste and compare a curated selection of 2015 Brunellos. Our three hosts have invited collated a host of top producers to showcase their expressions of this exceptional year, including Riserva and single-vineyard bottlings, making for a fantastic opportunity to explore the nuances of this standout vintage with the people who know it best. Members can look forward to tasting wines from the following producers: Casanova di Neri Castello di Argiano Col d'Orcia Cupano Il Marroneto Le Chiuse Le Potazzine Le Ragnaie Le Ripi Poggio di Sotto Salicutti Sesti Tricerchi Tuesday 20th May St. James’s Room 18:30 – Welcome reception 19:00 – Masterclass begins 20:30 – Masterclass ends Please note that we now offer a tasting board of charcuterie, cheese, olives and smoked crispy chickpeas to accompany your tasting. Canadian Walkaround Tasting in partnership with the Academie du Vin and the High Commission of Canada – Wednesday 11th May
£45.00The Academie du Vin in partnership with the High Commission of Canada invites you to join us in the Club on Wednesday 11th May, as we explore one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. In 1983, Bartholomew Broadbent, then based in Toronto representing the Symington Family Ports in Canada, opened a branch of L’Academie du Vin, the Paris wine school that Steven Spurrier had founded a decade earlier based on the teachings of his acknowledged mentor, Michael Broadbent. In 1986, with Bartholomew moving to San Francisco, the management of L’Academie was taken over by wine lover, businessman and 67 Pall Mall Member, Marc Nadeau. Marc has since been actively involved in nurturing Canada’s position on the global wine stage, and has introduced many foreign winemakers, wine lovers and personalities to the Niagara, Price Edward county, Nova Scotia and Okanagan Valley regions. To give Members a little background on Canada as a wine-making region, during the first half of the twentieth century, the temperance movement and the demand for fortified and sweet wines hindered the development of a quality table wine industry. It was during the 60's that this demand shifted from sweet and fortified wines to drier and low alcohol wines. There was significant growth and development within the Canadian wine industry during this time, with access to better grape varieties, disease resistant clones and in-depth viticulture research. We very much look forward to welcoming you to what will be a fascinating evening of a whole host of fantastic Canadian expressions.
