Deep Dive Bordeaux: The Perfume of Wine
Hosted by Jane Anson, Alexandre Schmitt & Michael Silacci What does it mean when you say a wine has blue, red or black fruits? What difference does it make to mouthfeel, acidity or sweetness? Textures and aromatics in wine add another dimension to your enjoyment, and this masterclass will give the keys to describing them. Jane Anson tastes with Alexandre Schmitt, an ex-perfumer who studied at the Institute of Versailles and now consults to many of the world's greatest wine estates. They taste through leading wines from Napa and Bordeaux, across a number of vintages, to explain the impact that different soils, weather conditions and winemaking philosophies make on the taste and impressions of the wine in the glass. Live from the Vines: San Leonardo
Hosted by Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga & Filippo Bartolotta Formerly a 1000 year old monastery, for over three centuries San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Marchese Carlo’s father, a passionate winemaker, first reorganised the estate between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. But Carlo was the family’s first true winemaker: his love for great wines led him to concentrate on San Leonardo almost all his efforts and time over fifty years. That passionate love for the vine and its wine he passed on in turn to his son Anselmo, who today directs the family winery, with every decision animated by that love for an estate so beloved by so many generations of his family.Meet Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga along with wine expert Filippo Bartolotta as we discover this iconic estate through a vertical tasting of 6 wines. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Biodynamic Viticulture
Hosted by Jane Anson, Florence Cathiard, Daniel Cathiard, Yann Laudeho Leroy, Justine Tesseron, Bérénice Lurton, Frédéric Nivelle & Yuanjun Zhang While Bordeaux may not have carved out a name for itself as a hotbed of biodynamic viticulture, there exist a clutch of producers who have been quietly guided by its principles for years; furthermore, these are not boutique, artisanal operations, but some of the world’s most distinguished names such as Smith Haut Lafitte, Palmer and Latour. Dipping into this world of lunar calendars, compost preparations and fruit-versus-root days, Jane Anson speaks to Bordeaux’s biodynamic pioneer, Pontet-Canet, to hear how this once-considered extreme practice is achievable in such a capricious climate, and sits down with Yuanjun Zhang, wine buyer and sommelier at Bordeaux’s Tchin Tchin Wine Bar, for a tasting of superlative wines from these top-flight properties. Jasper on Terroir: Volnay 1er Cru
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW ‘Volnay is my wine,’ says Jasper Morris MW, our lead for this masterclass dedicated to one of Burgundy’s red-wine treasures; certainly, the fragrance and gossamer touch of Volnay can leave an indelible impression. Starting out among the vines, Morris unpicks the intricacies of Volnay’s sloped premier cru vineyards, some laced with limestone, others sitting on beds of clay. To further elucidate their distinguishing marks and individual charms, we’re introduced to a line-up of textbook Volnay from Morris’ most cherished spots including Clos des Chênes, Les Taillepieds, and the centenarian vines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon’s Champans. Live from the Vines: The Mazzei Family – Siepi
Hosted by Filippo Mazzei, Francesco Mazzei, Giovanni Mazzei & Gionata Pulignani It has been defined as one of the wines that changed Italy’s wine style, and no one would deny that it should find an honoured place in the cellar of those who appreciate terroir wines. The dream of Lapo Mazzei, Siepi was established in 1992 as a distillation into wine of the breath-taking beauty of this 6-hectares vineyard in Castellina in Chianti and of its distinctive characteristics, beginning with its climate and soils. Add to that a painstakingly-respectful viticulture aimed at protecting the local microbiome and the result is the precious cuvée of Sangiovese and Merlot Siepi by Castello di Fonterutoli, now guided by Lapo Mazzei’s sons Filippo and Francesco and his grandson Giovanni. Live from the Vines: Château Brane-Cantenac
Hosted by Jane Anson & Henri Lurton With its grand, almost exclusively gold label – certainly one of the world’s most eye-catching - second growth Château Brane-Cantenac certainly talks the talk, but it has long since demonstrated it also walks the walk. A Margaux property of distinction, Brane-Cantenac’s story began over 250 years ago, and its reputation was fixed long before Bordeaux’s 1855 classification set in stone the hierarchy of its Médoc estates. Henri Lurton is the latest member of the renowned Lurton family to own Brane-Cantena, and since his stewardship began in 1992 the wines have reached even greater heights. He is joined by Bordeaux expert Jane Anson to talk about his unwavering quest to secure Brane-Cantenac’s status for future generations and virtual members can also taste alongside and indulge in a selection of library vintages pulled from Brane-Cantenac’s cellars. Château Brane-Cantenac, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, Margaux 2000 (Please note that the 2000 is a replacement for the 1995 vintage tasted in the episode) Château Brane-Cantenac, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, Margaux 1989 Château Brane-Cantenac, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, Margaux 1998 Château Brane-Cantenac, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, Margaux 2005 Château Brane-Cantenac, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, Margaux 2009 Château Brane-Cantenac, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, Margaux 2016Read more -

In Good Spirits: 58 Gin
Hosted by Amelia Singer & Carmen O'Neal 58 Gin essentially takes its name from 57 failed distillations which, for managing director Carmen O’Neal, didn’t quite hit the bullseye. The following run however was a triumph worth honouring. Ensconced in a London railway arch, the ‘Gin from the Heart’ sustainable ethos of 58 Gin can be detected every step of the way – even the apples and sloes (once they’ve fulfilled their primary purpose) are turned into crumble desserts. Wine educator Amelia Singer pays a visit to discover what makes this gin artisan tick. Rolling up her sleeves she mans the production line to concoct her own potion, before settling in at the bar with an array of gins which are also available as a tasting kit to digital members. Deep Dive Bordeaux: When is your claret ready to drink?
Hosted by Jane Anson & Richard Bampfield MW For many of us, the prospect of opening a classed-growth Bordeaux goes hand in hand with seeking out its drinking window according to the world’s finest critics - no one wants to commit wine infanticide, nor take a corkscrew to a precious bottle whose glory days now require carbon dating. However, their palates are not yours, and your own preferences (a penchant for fierce, palate-wrenching tannins, perhaps) understandably carry the most weight. In another unmissable Deep Dive Bordeaux, Jane Anson and Richard Bampfield MW supply you with the tools needed to undertake your own risk assessment, illuminating their guide with a selection of Bordeaux’s finest wines, from a variety of vintages and regions. Also available as a tasting kit to digital members (this is exquisitely interactive television) they lead us through the hallmarks of each vintage, region, and even the château, all the while explaining the key factors in gauging a wine’s evolution. Live from the Vines: Ornellaia
Hosted by Axel Heinz & Ronan Sayburn MS In this edition of 'Live From the Vines', we visit the Estate of the legendary Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Super Tuscan wine, Ornellaia. We begin with a conversation with Estate Director Axel Heinz, where he sheds valuable insight into Bolgheri’s exemplary terroir, before guiding us through Ornellaia’s unique vision. We learn more about Ornellaia’s obsession with excellence at all levels, and intolerance to any shortcuts in the production process. Axel is joined by Agronomist Giuliano Tarchi, and Oenologue Olga Fusari, as they discuss viticulture, vineyard management, philosophy and practices. Ronan Sayburn MS then leads a knockout tasting, including two vintages of Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia, and four Ornellaia vintages. Jasper on Terroir: Morgon
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW, Mee Godard, Louis-Benoit Desvignes & Jean-Marc Burgaud Of all Beaujolais’ 10 crus, Morgon is regularly name-checked as being the one whose wines will not only manage, but indeed require and subsequently blossom from an extended stay in the cellar. Its soils, known locally as roche pourrie (‘rotten rock’) - often tinged blue and laced with deposits from a long-silent volcano – are particular to the area and add the stuffing to Morgon’s brand of the Gamay grape. Jasper Morris MW visits winemaker Jean-Marc Burgaud – one of Morgon’s luminaries – to investigate the nooks and crannies of this compelling appellation, unpick its geological fabric and uncork a clutch of its finest, terroir-crafted wines to help complete the picture. Live from the Vines: Neudorf Vineyards
Hosted by Ronan Sayburn MS, Judy Finn, Tim Finn & Rosie Finn Neudorf Vineyards began life in 1978 when Judy and Tim Finn (self-admittedly still riding the ‘back-to-the-land’ wave of the late 1960s) laid down their first vines, with the intention of crafting wines faithful to their soils. A general dearth of viticultural knowledge in New Zealand at the time led to the Finns adopting a suck it and see approach, with a whole host of varieties going into the ground. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir proved to be star performers and the launchpad for the organically run Neudorf where you will also find Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Albariño. The addition to the team of daughter Rosie and winemaker Todd Stevens has allowed Judy and Tim to ease off the gas, although that spirit of creating honest, land-shaped wine remains at its core, as Stevens notes: ‘We have an exceptional site here at Neudorf and it demands little from us in the winery. If we can guide grapes into wine of integrity without buggering it up, we are content.’ Neudorf, Rosie's Block, Moutere, Albariño, Nelson 2020 Neudorf, Tiritiri, Chardonnay, Nelson 2019 Neudorf, Rosie's Block, Twenty Five Rows, Chardonnay, Nelson 2019 Neudorf, Rosie's Block, Moutere, Chardonnay, Nelson 2019 Neudorf, Home Block, Moutere, Chardonnay, Nelson 2019 Neudorf, Home Block, Moutere, Pinot Noir, Nelson 2017 Please note that the Neudorf, Home Block, Moutere, Pinot Noir, Nelson 2019 is replacing the Neudorf, Rosie's Block, Moutere, Chardonnay, Nelson 2019 and the Neudorf, Tom's Block, Moutere, Pinot Noir, Nelson 2017 is replacing the Neudorf, Home Block, Moutere, Pinot Noir, Nelson 2017 tasted during the episode.Read more
