Live from the Vines: Château Angélus
Hosted by Jane Anson & Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal Château Angélus has been owned by the Boüard de Laforest family since 1782 and takes its name from the Angélus bells from three different churches that are audible from the vineyards. Less than a kilometre from the famous Saint-Emilion bell tower, situated on the much-vaunted south-facing “foot of the hill”, Angélus has been the life work of eight generations of the Boüard de Laforest family. We speak with Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, the third woman to preside over the fortunes of Château Angélus. Into the Vines Through the Wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia – Tuesday 21st February
£50.00Nudging up against Slovenia and Austria, Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s name has been made on the back of characterful, whistle-clean white wines which seem to directly echo the purity of the region’s mountainous terroir; however, this doesn’t even begin to tell the full story. Here you will also find generous and elegant reds, not to mention a swathe of idiosyncratic wine styles found nowhere else - anyone for a super-macerated, copper-coloured Pinot Grigio that’s been aged on its lees for two years? We hope Members will be similarly enthused and delighted to welcome Matteo Bellotto and Angelo Turi from Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s consorzio, as we taste the nuances of a region which plays host to 66 different varieties planted on a complex array of soils. Aided by in-depth data presented via Google Earth, Members will embark on a journey deep into the viticultural tradition of a region whose uniqueness is perfectly transmitted through its wines. The wines we will be tasting: 2021 Adriano Gigante, Friulano Vigneto Storico 2020 Livio Felluga, Terre Alte 2021 Venica & Venica, Ronco delle Mele 2018 Ermacora, Picolit 2019 Specogna, Pinot Grigio Ramato Riserva 2016 Attimis Maniago, Tazzelenghe 2016 Ermacora, Pignolo 2016 Valentino Butussi, Godje Tuesday 21st February St James’s Room 18:30 Welcome Drink 19:00 Masterclass starts 20:30 Masterclass endsRead morePlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 48 hours before the event. Académie du Vin Book Club Evening With Andrew Jefford – Friday 4th November
£85.00Andrew Jefford is one of today’s most highly respected and awarded wine writers, a scribe described by the legendary winemaker Randall Grahm as ‘the most thoughtful person we have writing about wine'. On November 4th, we present a very special opportunity to join him in conversation with 67 Member Hermione Ireland of Académie du Vin Library, his publisher, as he talks about his new book, Drinking with the Valkyries. The Académie du Vin Library was founded by Steven Spurrier and friends and is dedicated to publishing the finest wine writing of the past, the present and the future. Its credo of quality over quantity, but most of all choosing books for their readability, is perfectly encapsulated in Drinking with the Valkyries, in which Andrew anatomises the pleasure that awaits every drinker while simultaneously furnishing a philosophy of wine based on personal discovery. Do join us for an evening of libation and illumination featuring a distinctive set of wines featured in the book, and where questions from the audience are very much encouraged... Celebrate Alcohol Free with Laura Willoughby MBE and Josh Kelly – Friday 21st October
£45.00Quenching one’s thirst during periods of abstinence has traditionally meant an indecent reliance on lime and soda, beverages which made a mockery of your recommended sugar quota or resorting to their sugar-stripped cousins. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Pomerol 2.0
Hosted by Jane Anson Despite its modest size - just the 800ha of vineyards - few regions match the cachet of Pomerol, home to titans such as Le Pin and Petrus, making the appellation the super-luxe source of the world’s most valuable wines. Jane Anson, author of Inside Bordeaux, is perfectly placed to shine a light on this vibrant, relatively young region, including the dominance of the Merlot grape, the ‘garage’ movement of the 1990s, Pomerol’s unique blue clay soils and, of course, those red-carpet châteaux. Walkaround tasting with Napa disruptor Realm Cellars – Wednesday 1st October
£65.00In a region not known for a lack of ambition, Realm Cellars is arguably the most ambitious winery in Napa Valley today. Founded on a negociant model in 2002, it spared no expense in buying grapes from some of Napa’s top sites, among them To Kalon in Oakville, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane in St. Helena, and Farella Vineyard in Coombsville, to make wines whose lavish vinification soon found favour among the influential US critics of the time. It was in 2009, under the auspices of Michel Rolland protegé Benoit Touquette, who had previously made wine at Napa standouts Dalla Valle, Ovid and Screaming Eagle, that the winemaking became more refined. Then, in 2012, Realm set out on its second act, as Touquette joined up with new co-owner Scott Becker, formerly of Cakebread Cellars and Harlan’s Promontory. Today, as well as making wines from its original sources, Realm also farms 75 acres of its own vineyards across some of Napa’s most notable regions, including Stags Leap District, Pritchard Hill and Coombsville. These yield an increasingly acclaimed range of estate wines, single-vineyard cuvées and proprietary blends whose focus on site over style have made them a staple of US collectors’ cellars. Now, Realm has its sights set on the UK market. We are delighted to welcome owner Scott Becker to host a comprehensive introduction to Realm, via an informal tasting of the complete 2023 range, as well as an older vintage of The Bard, and the 2024 release of its Sauvignon Blanc. A must for devotees of Napa – and of nuanced, site-specific Cabernet in general. The wines we’ll be tasting: 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, Fidelio, Realm Cellars, Napa Valley 2023 Merlot, The Tempest, Realm Cellars, Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, The Bard, Realm Cellars, Napa Valley 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, The Bard, Realm Cellars, Napa Valley 2023 Moonracer, (Bordeaux blend), Realm Cellars, Stags Leap District, Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, Hartwell XX, Realm Cellars, Stags Leap District, Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, Farella, Realm Cellars, Coombsville, Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, Houyi, Realm Cellars, Pritchard Hill, Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Franc, Heavenly Questions, Realm Cellars, Pritchard Hill, Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer To Kalon, Realm Cellars, Oakville, Napa Valley 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Realm Cellars, St Helena, Napa Valley Wednesday 1st October Lutyens Room 18:30 – 19:30 – First session 19:30 – 20:30 – Second session £65 per personSelect options This product has multiple variants. Former somm Emmanuel Cadieu returns with his favourite wines – Monday 24th November
£145.00 – £160.00Price range: £145.00 through £160.00As part of our ten-year celebrations, we are thrilled to welcome back a clutch of familiar faces from the last decade – and first up is former deputy head sommelier Emmanuel Cadieu. Emmanuel joined us in 2018, following stints working in Sydney and at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay here in London. He has since made a name for himself in Paris, having first taken the role of head sommelier at the three-Michelin-starred Plenitude within the Hotel Cheval Blanc, and now stepping up to become wine director across the whole property. For one night only, Emmanuel will be returning to the club to present a half-dozen of his favourite wines in what promises to be a fun, informal tasting. The wines span a range of regions and varieties, including some more offbeat cuvées: a Loire Chenin Blanc from a small, mother-and-daughter operation; a Jura Chardonnay; and a wild, unfiltered, Corsican Vermentino. Reds come from Sonoma Coast, the Rhône Valley and Savoie, via the ultra-premium Mondeuse Tradition bottling from Domaine Prieuré Saint Christophe. ‘It’s a selection that brings together some of my personal favourites,’ says Emmanuel. ‘Whether from producers highly respected for their work in the vineyards, their commitment to organic viticulture or biodynamic farming, or even their involvement in the natural wine movement. Each of these wines has given me moments of genuine emotion, and they all carry comforting memories – whether from my vineyard visits with those passionate growers or from shared moments of tasting their wines.’ ‘I invite you to enjoy, as I have, the singular character of these wines – each of them a true reflection of the specific terroirs from which they are born.’ The wines we will be tasting: 2022 Savennières Roche aux Moine, Tessa Laroche 2018 Côtes du Jura, Chardonnay La Bardette, Domaine Labet 2022 Nicolas Mariotti Bindi, Mursaglia Vieilliessement Prolonge, Corsica 2014 Vin de Pays d’Allobroges, Mondeuse Tradition, Domaine Prieuré Saint Christophe 2014 Pinot Noir, Pivot Vineyard, Littorai, Sonoma Coast 2015 Saint-Joseph, Domaine Pierre Gonon Monday 24th November St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. The wines and Ports of Douro pioneer Niepoort – Monday 6th October
£95.00 – £110.00Price range: £95.00 through £110.00When Dirk Niepoort first spearheaded a focus on unfortified Douro table wines made from indigenous varieties, he was seen as a something of a maverick. Thirty years ago, the Douro Valley was still very much about Port and Port only, and showcasing obscure local varieties was seen as a brave – some would say foolhardy – initiative.
Today, the region’s table wines are increasingly heralded for their character and verve – and Niepoort remains at the forefront of their production. One of Dirk’s early priorities when he took over from his father in the 1990s was to purchase parcels of old, steep (and often, counter-intuitively, north-facing) Douro vineyards to give greater control over supply. The family have since branched out to other regions – Dão and Bairrada – and now own over 80 hectares, all farmed organically, with a futuristic winery built in 2007 to handle all its table wines. The Niepoort wines have become known for a wonderful lightness of touch and supreme elegance and purity – qualities that are so prized today. At the same time, the producer has long had a fine reputation for Port – Tawny Port in particular – and remains the only house to produce the signature ‘Garrafeira’ Ports, which are aged in wood and then glass demi-johns before being bottled. Niepoort has been family owned since its creation in 1842, and is today led by the fifth and sixth generations, Dirk and Daniel. We are delighted to welcome Daniel Niepoort to guide us through a selection of these spellbinding wines (and, yes, a Vintage Port). Allram Estates Kamptal Masterclass – Monday 6th February
£50.00The award-winning Allram estate lies in the heart of the Kamptal, in the picturesque Strass im Strassertal, and has been one of the leading lights of the region for decades, with holdings in the famous vineyards of Heiligenstein, Gaisberg and Renner. Allram is very much a family enterprise, with father Erich and son Lorenz sharing responsibilities in the vineyards and cellar, whilst mother Michaela and daughter Magdalena oversee the commercial side of the business. It is this family tradition, harmony and the passing on of knowledge through the generations which lies at the root of the Allrams’ ethos. The end result is a range of stunning, organic wines which speak with clarity of their origin and centre on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, varieties which thrive in the hands of Lorenz, a talented young winemaker who will be guiding Members through his beautiful wines. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Pessac-Léognan
Hosted by Jane Anson The soils of Pessac-Léognan – awash with sand and gravel – arguably provided the genesis of what is today the world’s most celebrated and marketable region: Bordeaux. In 1305, the man who was to become Pope Pape Clément V planted the first vineyard on the estate now known as Château Pape Clément, while in the mid-17th century, the then owners of Château Haut Brion - the only non-Médoc classed growth and where grapes have been cultivated since Roman times – opened an eponymous tavern in London (the Pontac’s Head) as a means of promoting and selling its wines. This is an extraordinary opportunity to taste from these two historic properties as well as four of its esteemed peers. Lead by Bordeaux specialist Jane Anson, this tour of Pessac examines its history, climate and terroir which have coalesced to create not only phenomenal red wines but superlative whites as well.
