Live From the Vines: E. Guigal
£155.00Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW & Philippe Guigal Established in 1946, Guigal is arguably a more recent tenant of a region which – like many others in France – threads its way back to the Romans. Yet, despite its relative precociousness, for much of its existence Guigal has been justifiably framed as Rhône nobility. Guigal’s birthplace is a region in the Rhône’s north where the sun is capable of cascading down onto the vines to such extremes that it gave the appellation its name: Côte Rôtie, or ‘roasted slope’. While the northern Rhône remains its beating heart, in 2017 Guigal spread its wings, incorporating into its stable the Châteauneuf-du-Pape property of Domaine Nalys. The sum of these parts represents a cross section of the Rhône Valley’s preeminent sites, and Philippe Guigal joins Richard Bampfield MW to discuss his family’s adventures and taste the wines which are also available as a tasting kit to our digital members. Live From the Vines: Château Montrose
Hosted by Jane Anson & Hervé Berland We are on home turf for Jane Anson in this episode of Live From the Vines, as we meander to Saint-Estèphe to meet Hervé Berland, CEO of Château Montrose. Here we learn the story of three families, pioneers in the Médoc since 1815, each on a quest for excellence and legendary vintages, who built and shaped Château Montrose over the course of two centuries. We then look into the future through the eyes of current owners, Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who launched a seven year renovation of the estate, including a 1,000-m2, 11 metre-high main barrel hall for maturation in ideal conditions and 3,000 m2 of rooftop solar panels. 850th anniversary of Schloss Gobelsburg – Jubilee Cuvée tasting with Michael Moosbrugger | Tuesday 19th October
£65.00Schloss Gobelsburg, wine producer in the Kamptal region of Eastern Austria, is celebrating its 850th anniversary this year. They track their history as a wine producing estate back to 1171. The castle still belongs to the Cistercian monks of nearby Zwettl, though Michael Moosbrugger has overseen the estate since 1996, and presided over a period of dramatic success, making this now one of the most iconic estates of Austria. Seven times Schloss Gobelsburg has featured in Wine and Spirits Magazine “Top 100 Wineries” as well as innumerable other international and Austrian awards for both the winery and its wines. Join Michael in the St. James’s Room to present a range of recent, and not so recent vintages, on 19th October. In addition to his great single vineyard Riesling and Gruner Veltliner from the best terroirs of the regions: (Lamm for GV and Heiligenstein for Riesling) we will also drink the Jubilee Cuvée, released this year. It has just won 99 points from Stuart Piggott, writing for James Suckling, and must be on the shortlist for the year’s most unusual wine: a varietal and vintage blend of 30 different vintages, taking us back as far as 1971. Michael has blended this to mark this landmark in the history of this great estate, and we are delighted to offer our Members the opportunity to toast to it’s individualism. Wines to be tasted: Brut Rosé sparkling GV Langenlois 2020 GV Lamm 2013 Riesling Gaisberg 2017 Riesling Heiligenstein 2010 Jubilee Tradition 50 years Pinot Noir Reserve 2010 GV Eiswein 2018. 20-vintage vertical of SuperTuscan Sassicaia going back to 1975, with owner Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta – Wednesday 26th November
£2,250.00Read moreYes, you read that correctly. Well, we did promise you some rather special events to celebrate our 10th anniversary…
Sassicaia is the original ‘SuperTuscan’ – a category it essentially invented with the 1968 launch of its revolutionary Bordeaux blend. The wine actually dates back to the 1940s, when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by a visit to Bordeaux, planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on his San Guido estate on the Tuscan coast, to make a wine for family and friends. In a region dominated by Sangiovese, such a move was not only unconventional, it was against the prevailing rules, meaning that when the wine came to be released commercially, it was done so as a humble Vino da Tavola. Nonetheless, Sassicaia’s elegance, complexity and longevity quickly gained critical acclaim, helping to redefine Italian wine’s global image and inspiring a wave of winemakers to experiment in similar fashion. Its 1985 vintage alone is a legend in its own lifetime, while the label as a whole sits not only as a benchmark for the country’s fine wines but alongside the world’s very top Cabernet blends, from Bordeaux to California. We are beyond thrilled to welcome Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, granddaughter of the founder and today the face of the estate, to host 12 Members at this landmark event. She will be joined in assessing the wines by our Head Sommelier Federico Moccia and friend of the Club Nelson Pari. Please note that there are only 12 places available at this very special tasting, on a first come, first served basis. 1975 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1977 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1978 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1981 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1982 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1985 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1988 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1990 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1993 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1997 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 1999 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2001 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2004 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2009 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2011 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2013 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2016 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2018 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2021 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri 2022 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri Wednesday 26th November St. James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:00 - Break for canapés to be served 21:30 - Masterclass ends Please note, tickets for this tasting are refundable for cancellations up to 1 month before the event. Valentine’s Day Oyster Shucking & Wine Pairing Masterclass
£125.00"I need to think, and to think I must have oysters and champagne." - Gyles Brandreth We are very excited to invite Members to a very romantic Oyster shucking workshop, where our sommeliers have chosen the perfect wines to pair. If you are a fan of oysters, then you know the pleasures that these intriguing bivalves offer. Oysters are as varied as their oceanic terroir - they can be crisp or silky, briny or sweet, 'citrusy' or redolent of cucumber. And no matter what the flavour or texture, they all beg for just the right wine... Oyster Boy combines street market patter with fine dining expertise, and for the last 8 years, the team have been visiting the finest of Europe’s many oyster farms, tasting the various bivalves to bring the best flavours and textures back to the London locations. We welcome Oyster Boy for a pairing of man's oldest delicacy with wines chosen by our sommelier team, following numerous tastings we have orchestrated to ensure that we perfect the pairings. In this workshop, Members will learn the differences in oyster species and their farming methods, the different textures and tastes they possess, and the finest wines with which to pair them. Additionally, you will also learn how to professionally and safely shuck (open) an oyster yourself. The wine & oyster pairings we will taste: WEST MERSEA ROCK, Colchester, Essex Meaty and briny with agricultural and herby aftertaste 2017 Chateau Guiraud , 'Le G de Chateau Guiraud' Blanc Sec CARLINGFORD- North East of Dublin, County Louth. Very light silky flesh, with a sweet, almost nutty flavour. 2017 Hundred Hills, Blanc De Blancs Lindisfarne Rocks- Holy Isle, Lindisfarne, England Crisp flavour of green wood and cucumber with a hint of melon 2019 Le Strette , Langhe Nas-cëtta del Comune di Novello DOC Morcombe Bay Oysters Crispy texture, clean and salty flavour without notes of cream sometimes found in summer oysters. 2017 Franz Hirtzberger , Grüner Veltliner , Kirchweg Smaragd Jersey Oysters Delicate fresh and salty flavour. California’s softer side, with DuMOL’s British winemaker – Monday 2nd March
£95.00 – £110.00Price range: £95.00 through £110.00Andy Smith’s first exposure to the wine world – in between swimming competitively for his native Scotland – was working in the Edinburgh branch of Oddbins in the early ‘90s. Today, there is an argument to say he is the most critically acclaimed British winemaker anywhere in the world. As the creative force behind Sonoma-based DuMOL, Andy has amassed a string of accolades in the likes of Vinous and The Wine Advocate, from snaring Antonio Galloni's Wine of the Year in 2023 to Robert Parker heralding the brand as ‘one of my favourite wineries’ for its ’world-class Chardonnays and Pinot’ back in the 2000s. And yet here in the UK, the wines continue to fly slightly under the radar. Andy left Edinburgh for New Zealand over 30 years ago, where he cut his winemaking teeth at Pinot Noir specialist Dry River in Martinborough. From there, he ventured to California, firstly at fellow Pinot exponent Littorai before joining superstar winemaker Paul Hobbs, working across all of his consultancies, including such names as Larkmead – and DuMOL. So successful was the latter partnership, that, back in 1999, he joined the estate full-time. These days Andy is senior partner and head winemaker, but likes to think of himself as vinegrower, focused largely on running DuMOL's estate vineyards and those of its partner-growers. Nestled in a particularly cool corner of the Sonoma Coast, DuMOL harnesses the fog-driven precipitation from the cooling Humboldt current and surprisingly modest temperatures in organically farmed, high-density vineyards, where leaf-thinning is required in order to reach full ripeness. The result is to produce a range of supremely drinkable, moderately oaked wines. 'You can't make great wine unless you have great vineyards,’ says Andy. ‘Most vineyards have one or two defining characteristics, or features – we try to draw out those very specific small nuances in each parcel.' We invite you to join the affable Andy to get to know DuMOL for yourselves via his top Chardonnay and Pinot bottlings across a range of vintages. The wines we’ll be tasting: 2023 Estate Chardonnay, DuMOL, Sonoma Coast 2020 Estate Chardonnay, DuMOL, Sonoma Coast 2023 Chardonnay, Hyde Vineyard, DuMOL, Carneros, Napa Valley 2018 Chardonnay, Hyde Vineyard, DuMOL, Carneros, Napa Valley 2023 Pinot Noir, Bressay Estate, DuMOL, Sonoma Coast, 2023 Pinot Noir, Finn, DuMOL, Russian River Valley 2020 Pinot Noir, Finn, DuMOL, Russian River Valley 2023 Pinot Noir, Finn, DuMOL, Russian River Valley 2018 Pinot Noir, Finn, DuMOL, Russian River Valley 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Meteor Vineyard, DuMOL, Coombsville, Napa Valley Monday 2nd March St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass starts 20:30 - Masterclass endsSelect options This product has multiple variants. A masterclass with former Head Sommelier Terry Kandylis – Wednesday 5th November
£145.00 – £160.00Price range: £145.00 through £160.00As part of our ten-year celebrations, we’re thrilled to be welcoming back some former favourites who have played a key role in shaping the Club’s journey over the last decade. And on Wednesday 5th November, Terry Kandylis will be returning to take us on a journey through a flight of his favourites wines, as well as a selection from his own winemaking venture. Terry was with us at the Club from its opening, latterly as Head Sommelier, before the pandemic brought a change of direction. Back in 2020, in the midst of lockdown, Terry took a trip to Ribera del Duero, where he uncovered a range of plots – often old, abandoned bush vines that were due to be uprooted. The intrepid – and somewhat incredulous – sommelier bought up the sites and set out to preserve and enhance the legacy of the gnarly old vines. Today, as well as serving as Group Head Sommelier of Noble Rot restaurants, Terry oversees a range of wines for his label Bendito Destino, or Blessed Destiny. ‘67 contributed hugely to my wine knowledge and experience and I will forever be grateful for the time I spent there and the people I met,’ says Terry. ‘I wanted to come back and host a tasting of wines that shaped me through my journey and gave me the inspiration to do what I do now.’Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe wines Terry has chosen all reflect this, often via the people behind them, starting with Jean-Marie Guffens, the Belgian maverick who single handedly put Maconnais back on the vinous map by making ‘Montrachet for normal people’. Dujac, meanwhile, is ‘the producer that made me fall in love with Burgundy’, while Tondonia is ‘Rich, textural, complex, a gastronomic wine that confirms why we should be drinking more rosé with character.’
Finally, Terry has selected a Barolo from Roagna – ‘another inspirational producer, which Luca Roagna has taken to a completely new level by looking back at history and learning from the past generations. That’s something I try to do too. “The past is the future” – that's my motto.’ We are delighted to welcome a pillar of our past back to the Club to present a selection of these favourite personal picks alongside a quartet of his own astonishing wines. The wines we will be tasting: 2020 Mâcon-Pierreclos, Tri de Chavigne, Domaine Guffens Heynen 2023 Bendito Destino, Abillo Mayor ‘Los Prados’ 2012 Viña Tondonia, Rosado 2022 Bendito Destino, Clarete, Navazal 2014 Charmes-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Domaine Dujac 2023 Bendito Destino, La Cabaña 2010 Barolo, Roagna 2022 Bendito Destino, Los Castaños Wednesday 5th November St James’s Room 18:30 - Welcome reception 19:00 - Masterclass begins 20:30 - Masterclass endsPlease note, tickets are refundable for cancellations up to 5 business days before the event. Federico’s Christmas favourites – Friday 2nd December
£75.00Not all Christmas lists are created equal, and few, if any, provoke as much serious thought as the curation of the wine list for your Christmas Day table: Champagne or Chablis with the smoked salmon, perhaps even an off-piste fino Sherry, and does opening that tempting but youthful classed growth equal vinous infanticide? Fortunately, the Club’s Head Sommelier Federico Moccia is on hand to help crystallise your thoughts (or delightfully muddy the waters) with a clutch of superb wines. Federico’s hand-picked selection of his festive favourites will prove ideal partners for your dishes over the Christmas season, including the big day itself. We hope to see you in the St. James’s Room for an evening of mince-pie merriment awash with fine wines and a warm festive glow. Louis M. Martini Masterclass with Edouard Baijot MW – Tuesday 13th December
£85.00Louis M. Martini is etched into Napa Valley folklore and has been creating top-tier Cabernet Sauvignon since 1933. The man himself reached the shores of the United States in 1899 at 12 years of age with little English or education to speak of. When 19, he returned to Italy to learn his craft, before returning and finding minor success in producing grape ‘bricks’ and concentrate which could legally be used for home winemaking during Prohibition. One of the first to champion single varietal wines in Napa and the first winery built in the region after the repeal of Prohibition, Louis M. Martini’s legacy of innovation has since been handed down through the generations. Join Edouard Baijot MW in the St. James’s Room for a masterclass in which we discover seven stellar wines from this iconic Napa Valley winery, including its fascinating and diverse expressions of Cabernet from California’s premier regions. Deep Dive Bordeaux: The Terroirs of Saint-Émilion
Hosted by Jane Anson & Etienne Le Floc'h Saint-Emilion is renowned for its cool, clay and limestone soils which provide the perfect foil for the early-ripening Merlot, the signature grape of this striking corner of Bordeaux. However, closer inspection of its contours soon reveals that the geological makeup of this grand appellation is a mite more complex. Accompanying Jane Anson in her excavation of Saint-Emilion’s soils is Etienne Le Floc'h of wine merchant Etablissement Martin. Supported by a clutch of imperious wines from notable vintages, the pair debate the makeup of these terroirs, their intriguing individuality and how these characteristics are ultimately realised in these much-coveted bottles. Extreme winemaking with Patagonia’s Otronia and superstar winemaker Alberto Antonini – Monday 13th October
£95.00 – £110.00Price range: £95.00 through £110.00‘Extreme winemaking’ has become something of a beacon for those looking for characterful wines from offbeat regions. And it doesn’t get much more extreme – or offbeat – than the wines of Otronia, made in the world’s most southerly vineyard. In Chubut, at parallel 45’33, Otronia’s vineyards are 500 miles further south than those of that other famous Patagonian outpost – Piero Incisa della Rocchetta and Jean-Marc Roulot’s Bodega Chacra. Here, in 2010, Argentinian energy tycoon Alejandro Bulgheroni planted 50 hectares of vines with the initial goal of making only sparkling wine (it was felt there would be insufficient warmth to ripen grapes for still wines). But the cool climate, which lends a high natural acidity to the grapes along with a remarkable aromatic intensity, is compensated by long, sunny days that yield a purity of sunlight, while the inherently dry, disease-free conditions allow organic practices to be followed. Even so, making wine in the middle of a cold desert, with no rain, extreme winds and temperature variations, stretches the limits of viticulture. The environment is incredibly hostile, with very little rainfall, bitterly cold temperatures, year-round frost-risk and winds of up to 110km/hr. But fortune favours the brave, and these merciless conditions have given rise to elegant wines of freshness and purity, precision and tension. They are overseen by world-renowned Alberto Antonini, the consultant winemaker who has made wines all around the world for clients such as Antinori, Biondi-Santi, Robert Mondavi, Au Bon Climat and Zuccardi. ‘Otronia is an amazing and challenging project I started from scratch back in 2011,’ he says. ‘I’m so happy with the results…’ And we are very happy to welcome Alberto to the Club. We invite you to join him for an evening exploring some of the world’s most extreme wines with one of the world’s most acclaimed winemakers as we taste Otronia’s flagship Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs alongside other wines from this astonishing location.
