Live From the Vines: Hirsch Vineyards
Hosted by Jasmine Hirsch & Elaine Brown When David Hirsch purchased a sheep ranch in 1978 on the Sonoma Coast, he was not sure what to do with the 1000 acres he had just acquired, in a remote location close to the ocean, surrounded by red wood trees. By 1980, the first vines were grown and the fruit sold, but no wine was to be produced until the early 90’s, when he was approached by wine makers of some renown seeking cooler vineyards closer to the coast. By 2000 David had caught the vinous bug, transforming into a fully dynamic winery producing 6000-8000 cases of wine a year. Wander amongst the vines with us in an episode where we learn more about this extraordinary story with Jasmine Hirsch and Elaine Brown. Live from the Vines: Fattoria Le Pupille
Hosted by Clara Gentili, Elisabetta Geppetti, Daniele Cernilli & Ettore Rizzi It takes a redoubtable individual to walk away from university at 20 years of age to take control of the family estate. Let us introduce you to Elisabetta Geppetti. Although Le Pupille - situated in Maremma Toscana - has been in the hands of the Geppetti family since the late 19th century, it wasn’t until the 1960s that wine became its core mission. Elisabetta’s arrival in 1985 saw the shackles truly come off, her tour de force nature exemplified by becoming president of the Morellino di Scansano consorzio in 1992, the first women in Italy to hold such a position. Today lauded as one of the Tuscan coast’s most vital estates, each year Fattoria Le Pupille releases a thrilling collection of wines, crystallised here by a masterclass featuring its barrel-fermented Petit Manseng, an unadulterated, emblematic Sangiovese, and Le Pupille’s flagship Bordeaux blend, Saffredi, known in some quarters as the Lafite of Tuscany and which was created in partnership with Giacomo Tachis, he of Sassicaia, Tignanello and Ornellaia. Live From the Vines: Savage Wines
Hosted by Duncan Savage Duncan Savage’s Sauvignon sleight of hand puts him on a whole other level with the grape according to wine legend and fellow South African, Eben Sadie. Seeing as Savage worked under the peerless Didier Daganeau in the Loire Valley and was once winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards - whose Sauvignons and Sémillons under his watch hoovered up awards – his breeding is certainly impeccable. Yet there are many more strings to his bow, and here he introduces us to the full repertoire from his function-over-form urban winery, from which comes some of South Africa’s hottest tickets including Cinsault, Syrah and blends of both hues. Live From the Vines: Ataraxia
Hosted by William Lowe MW, Kevin Grant, Hanli Grant & Danie Stemmet Ataraxia is Greek for ‘a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation’, which gives you a sense of the doctrine being pursued at this family-owned winery in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The work of husband-and-wife team Kevin and Hanli Grant, Ataraxia began life in 2004 and, for now, covers just 12ha. Kevin and Hanli invite William Lowe MW to discuss the untamed beauty and personality of this pocket of coastal South Africa, and to sample their hand-crafted wines which are also available as a tasting kit to digital members.
