The Expert Series: Fortified Series – Sherry
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW & Sarah Jane Evans MW We venture into the Sherry Triangle, that region of Andalucía demarcated by three cities, and which is home to one of wine’s most historic and idiosyncratic drinks. Over the last few years, talk of a sherry renaissance has been a constant thanks to an influx of winemakers and owners who have injected diversity and dynamism, complementing the region’s many centuries of hard-earned know-how. Sherry expert Sarah Jane Evans MW, along with fellow Master of Wine Demetri Walters, adds substance to the chatter, weaving the region’s history into a masterclass which shines a light on sherry’s various styles and its leading protagonists, framed by a sublime selection which is available as a tasting kit to digital members. Live from the Vines: Fattoria Le Pupille
Hosted by Clara Gentili, Elisabetta Geppetti, Daniele Cernilli & Ettore Rizzi It takes a redoubtable individual to walk away from university at 20 years of age to take control of the family estate. Let us introduce you to Elisabetta Geppetti. Although Le Pupille - situated in Maremma Toscana - has been in the hands of the Geppetti family since the late 19th century, it wasn’t until the 1960s that wine became its core mission. Elisabetta’s arrival in 1985 saw the shackles truly come off, her tour de force nature exemplified by becoming president of the Morellino di Scansano consorzio in 1992, the first women in Italy to hold such a position. Today lauded as one of the Tuscan coast’s most vital estates, each year Fattoria Le Pupille releases a thrilling collection of wines, crystallised here by a masterclass featuring its barrel-fermented Petit Manseng, an unadulterated, emblematic Sangiovese, and Le Pupille’s flagship Bordeaux blend, Saffredi, known in some quarters as the Lafite of Tuscany and which was created in partnership with Giacomo Tachis, he of Sassicaia, Tignanello and Ornellaia. The Expert Series: A comparison of the wine tasting approaches of a Sommelier and a Master of Wine
Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW & Zsofi Kiss Much has been written about the differences between the Master Sommelier and Master of Wine exams, in particular the approach to wine tasting. And yet it is likely that most sommeliers know little about the MW approach…….and vice-versa. Live from the Vines: La Rioja Alta
Hosted by Sarah Jane Evans MW, Guillermo de Aranzabal & Julio Sáenz Founded towards the tail-end of the 19th century, La Rioja Alta has for generations proved itself as one of Rioja’s standard bearers, famous not only for its classically sculpted wines and the extended ageing they undertake, but also its on-site cooperage which at any given time is home to around 30,000 barrels. In conversation with La Rioja Alta’s winemaker Julio Sáenz and its president Guillermo de Aranzabal, Spanish expert Sarah Jane Evans MW is afforded rare access, exploring the rich heritage and ceaseless innovation of this Rioja legend. Hosted by Jasper Morris MW & Thierry Pillot Are you a Puligny person or a Meursault fan? Hang on, what about Chassagne? Live from the Vines: Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW, Franck Buisson & Frédérick Buisson The Buissons have been part of Burgundy’s vinegrowing fabric for over 250 years, and mainstays of Saint-Romain since it achieved appellation status just after the Second World War. At the helm today are brothers Franck and Frédérick, who navigate according to biodynamic theory, which is of no surprise considering that their father, Henri, worked the land organically as far back as the 1960s. Hear more about what drives the siblings to pursue and persist with the biodynamic philosophy, the family’s heritage, its individual parcels of Saint-Romain vineyards, as well as its holdings in those corners of Burgundy considered vineyard nobility: Corton and Corton Charlemagne. Live from the Vines: Domaine Ponsot
Hosted by Alexandre Abel & Jasper Morris MW Integrity courses through Ponsot, be that in its approach in the vineyard, or the relationship it enjoys with its many adorers. Regards the former, the Ponsot practice more than dips into both organic and biodynamic viticulture (although Ponsot eschews these tags). As to the latter, if it feels the wines are not up to scratch then Ponsot will reduce the price, as was the case for virtually the entire 1994 vintage. Alternatively, as Ponsot says, ‘we send it to the distillery, as we did for the Morey Clos des Monts Luisants 1993 and 2012.’ Master of Wine Jasper Morris visits this beacon of Burgundy, discussing Ponsot’s at-times controversial ethos with its chief winemaker Alexandre Abel and the family’s fifth-generation winegrower William Ponsot. It is an engrossing insight into the inner workings of an unflinchingly exacting property, culminating in a spectacular, multi-vintage tasting of its sublime Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which is also available to our digital members as a tasting kit.
