Live From the Vines: Hirsch Vineyards
Hosted by Jasmine Hirsch & Elaine Brown When David Hirsch purchased a sheep ranch in 1978 on the Sonoma Coast, he was not sure what to do with the 1000 acres he had just acquired, in a remote location close to the ocean, surrounded by red wood trees. By 1980, the first vines were grown and the fruit sold, but no wine was to be produced until the early 90’s, when he was approached by wine makers of some renown seeking cooler vineyards closer to the coast. By 2000 David had caught the vinous bug, transforming into a fully dynamic winery producing 6000-8000 cases of wine a year. Wander amongst the vines with us in an episode where we learn more about this extraordinary story with Jasmine Hirsch and Elaine Brown. Live From the Vines: Emiliana Organic Vineyards
Hosted by Noelia Orts, Alvaro Espinosa & Ronan Sayburn MS Emiliana opened its doors in 1998 and since day one has been a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, not only in its native Chile but on the global stage as well. One of its founders, the perpetually effervescent Alvaro Espinoza, was the trailblazer for biodynamics in Chile, and today it is Emiliana’s brilliant Noelia Orts who maintains the house’s tradition as being a place of prodigious winemaking. Joined by Ronan Sayburn MS, the trio discuss why Chile is heralded as a vinegrowing Shangri-La, and embark on a tasting tour of Emiliana’s vineyards which wind through the length of the country. Jasper on Vintage: 2017 – Red
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Mother Nature takes Burgundy’s vignerons on a white-knuckle ride at the best of times, and in 2016 she was in full flow, with frost driving down yields and leading to an army of jittery winemakers the following year, not least as it appeared 2017 was heading in the same direction. Fortunately, the vintage altered course and the wines of 2017 have been widely lauded, and while it’s the whites which have largely taken the glory, an abundance of terroir-driven, light on their feet and engaging reds have emerged from the year. Bringing his reservoirs of wisdom and expertise to bear, Jasper Morris MW marks your card for this fabulous vintage, adding flesh to the headlines and zeroing in on the appellations to note, proving once again he is your first port of call before any cellars are stocked. Domaine Launay-Horiot, Pommard Village, Les Perrières 2017 Domaine Michel Lafarge, Volnay Premier Cru, Clos des Chênes 2017 Domaine Henri Gouges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Clos des Porrets-St-Georges 2017 Domaine Jean Grivot, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Les Beaux Monts 2017 Domaine Hudelot-Baillet, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2017 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Les Goulots 2017Read more -
Live From the Vines: Royal Tokaji
Hosted by Kovács Adorján Zoltán, WD & Zsofi Kiss In little more than 30 years, Royal Tokaji has risen to and long since secured its place in the upper echelons of great sweet wine producers. Tokaji is a capricious beast that hinges on several climatic stars aligning, not least the ethereal misty mornings which merely hint at the wine’s enigmatic nature. Bringing clarity and insight, 67 Pall Mall’s Assistant Head Sommelier, Zsofi Kiss, is joined by Royal Tokaji’s Winery Director, Kovács Adorján Zoltán, to showcase a handful of its sublime creations, including its rarest and most singular of wines: Essencia. The Expert Series: France – Savoie
Hosted by Wink Lorch & Rosemary George MW Rosemary George MW and wine writer Wink Lorch continue their investigation into France’s eastern edges with this expert sketch of Savoie. This is largely white wine territory although varieties of both hues thrive here, and while grapes such as Jacquère, Altesse and the red Mondeuse are far from international celebrities, Savoie’s Alpine surroundings are argued to deliver a tangible freshness to the wines, with the winemaking suitably well harnessed as to celebrate this innate quality. George and Lorch discuss the idiosyncrasies of this picture-postcard region, ably supported by a flight of hand-picked examples which throw contemporary Savoie into sharp relief. Domaine Giachino, Apremont, Vin de Savoie 2020 Domaine des Ardoisières, Argile Blanc, IGP Vin des Allobroges 2019 Domaine des Orchis, Quintessence d'Altesse, Roussette de Savoie 2017 Jean-François Quénard, Au Pied des Tours, Chignin-Bergeron, Vin de Savoie 2019 Domaine des Côtes Rousses, Les Montagnes Rousses, Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte, Mondeuse, Vin de Savoie 2018 Domaine St-Germain, Persan, Vin de Savoie 2018Read more -
The Expert Series: Introduction to the Loire Valley – Red
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW The Loire River is France’s longest, beginning in the country’s heated south then rising north before abruptly coursing west and making its way to the Atlantic. It is on this last stretch where you will find – on both banks – some of France’s most honoured wine regions yet, conversely, some of its most underrated reds. The effortlessly food-friendly Cabernet Franc is the main player here and understandably takes centre stage as Demetri Walters MW concludes his Loire Valley profile. However, as Walters digs into the region’s winemaking heritage and highlights some of today’s leading practitioners, he also reveals more about the lesser-spotted Sancerre rouge, and opens a wine made from Grolleau, historically a high-yielding, workhorse grape, which has been transformed into anything but by one of our featured producers. Domaine Claude Riffault, La Noue, Sancerre Rouge 2018 Catherine & Pierre Breton, Grolleau 2017 Yannick Amirault, La Source, St. Nicolas de Bourgueil 2019 Fabrice Gasnier, Vieilles Vignes, Chinon 2018 Jacky Blot, Domaine de la Butte, Le Pied de la Butte, Bourgueil 2018 Clos Rougeard, Saumur-Champigny 2008 Please note that the Fabrice Gasnier, Vieilles Vignes, Chinon 2019 is replacing the Fabrice Gasnier, Vieilles Vignes, Chinon 2018 tasted during the episode.Read more -
Live From the Vines: Urla Winery
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW & Can Ortabas Established in 2006 by Can Ortabaș, Urla Winery - on Turkey’s Aegean coast - is something of a young buck, yet its inspiration and true genesis stretches back over 3,000 years, to a time which saw the planting on his property the ruined, terraced vineyards that Ortabaș chanced upon in 2000. Today, Urla Winery is one of the Aegean’s most dynamic producers: forever forward thinking, while at the same time drawing on its homeland’s winemaking heritage, even reviving its ancient varietals. Hosted by Master of Wine Demetri Walters alongside Can Ortabaș, this tasting is a rare opportunity to delve into the distinctive, characterful wines crafted by a winery which represents part of a new wave of Mediterranean ambition. Jasper on Vintage: 2017 – White
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Despite early, ominous signs of a frost-hit rerun of 2016 - and the mass burning of hay bales to avoid just that - 2017 dramatically changed course to become one of white Burgundy’s stars of the last decade. Making full use of his ample knowledge and far-reaching connections, Jasper Morris MW delivers his evaluation of the year, digging around amongst the minutiae of the vintage, and casting his eye over the producers and appellations who thrived against the odds, not least Chablis which, while still badly bruised by a wave of frost, delivered one of the standout successes of an already lauded year. The Expert Series: Introduction to the Loire Valley – White
Hosted by Demetri Walters MW From the buffeted, Atlantic-kissed vineyards of Muscadet in the extreme west, to the superstar appellation of Sancerre at its eastern edge, the Loire Valley’s spectrum of wines is dazzling, there existing a diversity of styles capable of going head-to-head with the most challenging of menus. Managing on this occasion to confine himself to the region’s whites, Demetri Walters MW has curated a glorious Loire snapshot, revealing sparkling Crémants - produced in the same time-consuming manner as Champagne - scented whites, and exquisite dessert wines which some other regions can only dream of. Deep Dive Bordeaux: The Perfume of Wine
Hosted by Jane Anson, Alexandre Schmitt & Michael Silacci What does it mean when you say a wine has blue, red or black fruits? What difference does it make to mouthfeel, acidity or sweetness? Textures and aromatics in wine add another dimension to your enjoyment, and this masterclass will give the keys to describing them. Jane Anson tastes with Alexandre Schmitt, an ex-perfumer who studied at the Institute of Versailles and now consults to many of the world's greatest wine estates. They taste through leading wines from Napa and Bordeaux, across a number of vintages, to explain the impact that different soils, weather conditions and winemaking philosophies make on the taste and impressions of the wine in the glass. Live from the Vines: San Leonardo
Hosted by Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga & Filippo Bartolotta Formerly a 1000 year old monastery, for over three centuries San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Marchese Carlo’s father, a passionate winemaker, first reorganised the estate between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. But Carlo was the family’s first true winemaker: his love for great wines led him to concentrate on San Leonardo almost all his efforts and time over fifty years. That passionate love for the vine and its wine he passed on in turn to his son Anselmo, who today directs the family winery, with every decision animated by that love for an estate so beloved by so many generations of his family.Meet Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga along with wine expert Filippo Bartolotta as we discover this iconic estate through a vertical tasting of 6 wines. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Biodynamic Viticulture
Hosted by Jane Anson, Florence Cathiard, Daniel Cathiard, Yann Laudeho Leroy, Justine Tesseron, Bérénice Lurton, Frédéric Nivelle & Yuanjun Zhang While Bordeaux may not have carved out a name for itself as a hotbed of biodynamic viticulture, there exist a clutch of producers who have been quietly guided by its principles for years; furthermore, these are not boutique, artisanal operations, but some of the world’s most distinguished names such as Smith Haut Lafitte, Palmer and Latour. Dipping into this world of lunar calendars, compost preparations and fruit-versus-root days, Jane Anson speaks to Bordeaux’s biodynamic pioneer, Pontet-Canet, to hear how this once-considered extreme practice is achievable in such a capricious climate, and sits down with Yuanjun Zhang, wine buyer and sommelier at Bordeaux’s Tchin Tchin Wine Bar, for a tasting of superlative wines from these top-flight properties. Jasper on Terroir: Volnay 1er Cru

Starting out among the vines, Morris unpicks the intricacies of Volnay’s sloped premier cru vineyards, some laced with limestone, others sitting on beds of clay. To further elucidate their distinguishing marks and individual charms, we’re introduced to a line-up of textbook Volnay from Morris’ most cherished spots including Clos des Chênes, Les Taillepieds, and the centenarian vines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon’s Champans.
