Live From the Vines: Álvaro Palacios – Bierzo

Palacios is the work of two men: the esteemed Alvaro Palacios (who in the early 1990s lit up the wine world with his Priorat wines, most notably L’Ermita and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios. The pair joined forces towards the end of that same decade, launching Descendientes de J. Palacios in the then-obscure region of Bierzo in northeast Spain. Now a poorly guarded secret, Bierzo seems to have it all: old vines; a monastic winemaking heritage; poor soils on teeth-clenchingly steep slopes, and a relatively unheard of grape variety (Mencia) perfectly acclimatised to its surroundings Ronan Sayburn MS and Ricardo Pérez Palacios discuss the allure of Bierzo and the Mencia grape, and how this is realised in a portfolio of wines which is among the most desired in Spain and includes the majestic, prized Moncerbal. Deep Dive Bordeaux: The Terroirs of Saint-Émilion
Hosted by Jane Anson & Etienne Le Floc'h Saint-Emilion is renowned for its cool, clay and limestone soils which provide the perfect foil for the early-ripening Merlot, the signature grape of this striking corner of Bordeaux. However, closer inspection of its contours soon reveals that the geological makeup of this grand appellation is a mite more complex. Accompanying Jane Anson in her excavation of Saint-Emilion’s soils is Etienne Le Floc'h of wine merchant Etablissement Martin. Here we learn the story of three families, pioneers in the Médoc since 1815, each on a quest for excellence and legendary vintages, who built and shaped Château Montrose over the course of two centuries. Deep Dive Bordeaux: Pessac-Léognan
Hosted by Jane Anson The soils of Pessac-Léognan – awash with sand and gravel – arguably provided the genesis of what is today the world’s most celebrated and marketable region: Bordeaux. In 1305, the man who was to become Pope Pape Clément V planted the first vineyard on the estate now known as Château Pape Clément, while in the mid-17th century, the then owners of Château Haut Brion - the only non-Médoc classed growth and where grapes have been cultivated since Roman times – opened an eponymous tavern in London (the Pontac’s Head) as a means of promoting and selling its wines. This is an extraordinary opportunity to taste from these two historic properties as well as four of its esteemed peers. Renowned for using only fresh ingredients and treating each botanical delicately and individually, Lowe takes Kiki Hopkins around the Cambridge Gin Lab, unpacking the formulas and art behind premium gin production.
