Live From the Vines: Ridgeview
Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW & Simon Roberts A ‘wine without borders’ policy reigns at Live from the Vines, with no corner of the winemaking world off-limits when it comes to bringing you behind-the-cellar door access to the finest producers and their wines. However, this edition comes from 67 Pall Mall’s backyard (almost) and sees Master of Wine Richard Bampfield head to Sussex and visit Ridgeview, one of England’s most established and celebrated sparkling wine producers. The chalk-infused landscape of the South Downs has been Ridgeview’s home for over two decades, during which time it has filled one trophy cabinet after another with awards from around the world. Bampfield meets Ridgeview’s head winemaker, Simon Roberts, to discuss the ingredients behind his family winery’s success and to taste through an effervescent triumvirate of its spectacular wines, which is also available as a tasting kit to our digital members. Live From the Vines: Château Talbot
Hosted by Jane Anson & Jean-Michel Laporte Château Talbot is one of several famous châteaux whose name highlights the influence on Bordeaux of those from beyond France’s shores which, in the case of this Fourth Growth, was Earl of Shrewsbury, John Talbot. For a shade over 100 years, Talbot has been owned by the Cordier family, a Bordeaux dynasty who in 2018 installed Jean-Michel Laporte (formerly of La Conseillante in Pomerol) as general director and winemaker. This episode of Live from the Vines sees Bordeaux expert Jane Anson meet Laporte at Talbot in the heart of Saint-Julien. Laporte not only celebrates Talbot’s heritage, uncorking a selection of library vintages, but also discusses the estate’s direction on his watch, including the 2018 release which marks a century of Cordier ownership. Live From the Vines: Trinity Hill
Hosted by Michael Henley, Warren Gibson & Lucy Pearce 1993 saw the first vines of Trinity Hill being dug into the dusty ground of an ancient riverbed in Hawke’s Bay’s Gimblett Gravels. However, Trinity Hill’s story began a few years previously and thousands of miles away in London’s Bleeding Heart restaurant, when the establishment’s owners entered into a pact with the renowned winemaker John Hancock, all convinced of Hawke’s Bay’s untapped potential. Michael Henley MW joins Incumbent chief winemaker Warren Gibson, who opens an exceptional selection of his wines which encapsulate the ethos of Trinity Hill and are available as a tasting kit to our digital members. The pair discuss Trinity Hill’s pioneering first steps, its evolution into one of New Zealand’s principal producers, the diverse patchwork of Hawke’s Bay terroirs, and the Rhône accent which can be sensed in many of its wines, most notably the imperious Homage which is partially created from vine cuttings sent from Hermitage itself. Live From the Vines: Villa Maria
Hosted by Oliver Powrie, Emma Jenkins, Jessica Bell, Paul Robinson, Richard Painter & Patrick Materman As one of the key protagonists in New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc phenomenon which lead to such a dramatic tilt in the wine landscape, it’s hard to underplay the imprint of Villa Maria. However, Villa Maria’s story and sheer scope of its practice is far more nuanced and textured, as revealed by Emma Jenkins MW, along with Villa Maria’s chief viticulturist Ollie Powrie, head of winegrowing Patrick Materman and senior Hawkes Bay winemaker Richard Painter. This red-only masterclass features library vintages as well as releases from its Reserve range (which only see the light of day in select years), before culminating in a multi-vintage showing of its iconic, Bordeaux-shaped Ngakirikiri; a wine which palpably demonstrates that, 60 years after its birth, Villa Maria continues to lay down markers. Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Gimblett Gravels 2002 Library Release Cabernet Sauvignon, Gimblett Gravels 2009 Ngakirikiri, Gimblett Gravels 2013 Ngakirikiri, Gimblett Gravels 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Gimblett Gravels 2015 Ngakirikiri, Gimblett Gravels 2018Read more -

Live From the Vines: Domaines Schlumberger
Hosted by Ronan Sayburn MS, Séverine Schlumberger & Thomas Schlumberger Established in 1810 and now into its seventh generation of family ownership, Schlumberger is blessed with 130ha of glorious Alsace terroir, over half of which is Grand Cru. Today’s custodians - Séverine and Thomas Schlumberger – tend to their cherished land in exacting and classical fashion, with two franc-comtois horses employed to plough and work the vineyards, while a pair of stonemasons continually maintain the 50km of dry-stone walls built along the contours of slopes which can reach 50°. Séverine and Thomas introduce Ronan Sayburn MS to their dramatically backdropped estate and a line-up of scented wines crafted from noble varietals – Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer – which have helped mould the reputation of both Schlumberger and its homeland. Riesling, Les Princes Abbés 2019 Riesling, Grand Cru Kitterlé 2017 Pinot Gris, Les Princes Abbés 2017 Pinot Gris, Grand Cru Kessler 2015 Gewurztraminer, Les Princes Abbés 2020 Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives, Cuvée Christine 2017Read more -

Live From the Vines: I Greppi
Hosted by Nelson Pari & Dale Rees Heatley I Greppi’s territory is not the golden, undulating hills of picture-postcard Tuscany, but the region’s no less panoramic Bolgheri coastline, without which the Bordeaux-inspired wines which have forged I Greppi’s reputation would be unachievable. Here, the cooling hand of sea breezes allied to the heat-tempering influence of the I Greppi lakes creates a cosseted environment for this 35ha estate’s Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 67 Pall Mall’s wine buyer Nelson Pari joins I Greppi’s general manager Dale Rees Heatley to explore this harmonious union of the elements. Naturally, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and Rees Heatley has hand-picked a multi-vintage selection of I Greppi’s wines (available to digital members) which give testimony to the Edenic quality of Bolgheri. Live From the Vines: Domaine Guillemot-Michel
Hosted by Jasper Morris MW Located between the two Mâconnais villages of Viré and Clessé, Domaine Guillemot-Michel clearly neither aches to be ahead of the curve nor goes in much for market-led business plans; until 2014 Pierrette Michel and her husband Marc Guillemot- who have run the family estate organically since 1982 and biodynamically since 1991 - only made one, sole wine. Even today the entire range numbers less than a handful, but it’s an inspirational, captivating, jewel of a collection. It includes a cuvée made from 65-year-old vines vinified in 800-litre terracotta amphora, a méthode ancestrale sparkling, plus eau-de-vie produced using old Burgundian stills heated by wood that’s cut and gathered from the local forest by the Guillemot-Michel family themselves.
