Live From the Vines: Yalumba
Hosted by Nick Ryan, Louisa Rose, Robert Hill Smith & Jessica Hill Smith It was in 1849 that Dorset-born Samuel Smith dug in his first vines in Australia’s Barossa. Five generations later, Yalumba is still family-owned, helmed by Robert Hill-Smith, and continues to negotiate - with seemingly consummate ease - the tightrope between commercial success and spectacular fine wines. Hosted by Australian wine expert Nick Ryan alongside Jessica Hill Smith and head winemaker Louisa Rose, this exploration of a New World superstar looks back at Yalumba’s trailblazing past, its unflinching innovation, and cracks open a range of wines which have forged its reputation. Available as a tasting kit to digital members, this is an opportunity to taste its glorious Viognier, The Virgilius, an old-vine Shiraz in the form of The Octavius, and its stellar, archetypal Cab-Shiraz blend, The Caley, regarded as ‘the pinnacle of a long winemaking journey of excellence.’ Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier, Eden Valley 2018 Yalumba The Tri-Centenary Grenache, Barossa Valley 2017 Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2016 Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2016 Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2012 Yalumba The Caley Cabernet Shiraz, Coonawarra and Barossa 2016Read more -

Live From the Vines: Boekenhoutskloof Winery
Hosted by Ronan Sayburn MS Although established in 1776, the modern-day tale of Boekenhoutskloof began in 1993 when the farm acquired new owners who embarked on a head-to-toe refurbishment. This included not only a finely tuned vineyard planting programme, but also the (ongoing) acquisition of 2,500-litre foudres made from Austrian oak and numbered in the same ‘Platform 9 & ¾’ font à la Harry Potter. Technical director Marc Kent joins Ronan Sayburn MS to discuss the story of Boekenhoutskloof and sample a selection of wines which are available as a tasting kit to digital members. It’s a tantalising line-up which includes the much-adored The Chocolate Block as well Porseleinberg - Kent’s new premium Syrah project which already stands as one of South Africa’s most highly regarded takes on the grape. Live From the Vines: Domaine Jean-René Germanier
Hosted by Chandra Kurt & Gilles Besse Founded in 1886 by Urbain Germanier, Jean-René Germanier - one of Switzerland’s most heritage-rich wineries - is now under the stewardship of the eponymous Jean-René and his winemaker nephew Gilles Besse. Besse was just 24 years old when he was approached by his uncle to join the family winery. A jazz saxophonist by trade, he knew nothing about wine yet hit the books with gusto and in 1993 made his winemaking bow at an estate which has been farmed sustainably for two decades. Swiss wine expert Chandra Kurt meets the pair, in search not only of more atypical tales, but also the ingredients which have taken this producer to the vanguard of Swiss wine, and its collection of cuvées which celebrate both international and proudly native varietals. Live From the Vines: Ataraxia
Hosted by William Lowe MW, Kevin Grant, Hanli Grant & Danie Stemmet Ataraxia is Greek for ‘a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation’, which gives you a sense of the doctrine being pursued at this family-owned winery in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The work of husband-and-wife team Kevin and Hanli Grant, Ataraxia began life in 2004 and, for now, covers just 12ha. Situated less than 5km from the Atlantic Ocean, its wines are sculpted by the cooling aspects of both altitude and coast, not to mention the underfoot terrain which is some of the oldest in the world. Kevin and Hanli invite William Lowe MW to discuss the untamed beauty and personality of this pocket of coastal South Africa, and to sample their hand-crafted wines which are also available as a tasting kit to digital members. Live From the Vines: Ridgeview
Hosted by Richard Bampfield MW & Simon Roberts A ‘wine without borders’ policy reigns at Live from the Vines, with no corner of the winemaking world off-limits when it comes to bringing you behind-the-cellar door access to the finest producers and their wines. However, this edition comes from 67 Pall Mall’s backyard (almost) and sees Master of Wine Richard Bampfield head to Sussex and visit Ridgeview, one of England’s most established and celebrated sparkling wine producers. The chalk-infused landscape of the South Downs has been Ridgeview’s home for over two decades, during which time it has filled one trophy cabinet after another with awards from around the world. Bampfield meets Ridgeview’s head winemaker, Simon Roberts, to discuss the ingredients behind his family winery’s success and to taste through an effervescent triumvirate of its spectacular wines, which is also available as a tasting kit to our digital members. Live From the Vines: Château Talbot
Hosted by Jane Anson & Jean-Michel Laporte Château Talbot is one of several famous châteaux whose name highlights the influence on Bordeaux of those from beyond France’s shores which, in the case of this Fourth Growth, was Earl of Shrewsbury, John Talbot. For a shade over 100 years, Talbot has been owned by the Cordier family, a Bordeaux dynasty who in 2018 installed Jean-Michel Laporte (formerly of La Conseillante in Pomerol) as general director and winemaker. This episode of Live from the Vines sees Bordeaux expert Jane Anson meet Laporte at Talbot in the heart of Saint-Julien. Laporte not only celebrates Talbot’s heritage, uncorking a selection of library vintages, but also discusses the estate’s direction on his watch, including the 2018 release which marks a century of Cordier ownership.
