Return of the Somm & a taste of Styria

It is a true pleasure to welcome Roberto Duran back to the Club, one of our sommeliers who was with us during the opening of the Club, and has been sipping away in Singapore for the last couple of years. It came as no surprise that we hadn’t even poured ourselves a celebratory glass before Roberto darted off to the bar and immediately had a bottle in hand of something he was dying to open. An Austrian expression, from Styria immediately caught his eye and it got us talking about the potential of Sauvignon Blanc from Styria.

The wines show a great grassy character, and tastes closer to Sauvignon Blanc from France than a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, for example. With pure minerality and finesse, these wines are vibrant and graceful.

The area has been referred to ‘the delicatessen of Austria’ and ‘the fruit orchard of Austria’ as, particularly in the south, it is the most fertile state. Styrians are very aware of its wealth of the culinary trilogy; wine, pumpkins (seed oil) and apples, which contribute significantly to the Styrian culture and way of life.

We were inspired by Roberto’s knowledge and passion for this region – one that we hope to explore in a Masterclass very soon.
