Madeira – one sip at a time… the producers

You may have seen our previous article on our sommeliers’ trip to Madeira. We wanted to know a little more about a few liquid highlights from the trip, in case you find yourself wanting a taste of island life…

HM Borges
1984 Sercial
Only 769 wines produced from one barrel, aged in barrel for 34 years.
Layers of sesame and soy sauce along with salted caramel. Vibrant with an impressive backbone of acidity.

Henriques & Henriques
1971 Sercial
Dried fruits, torrefied nuts and a hint of spiciness, mineral and iodine finish with a touch of sea spray.

Pereira D’Oliveira
D’Oliveiras has a long tradition of keeping the wines to age rather than releasing them, hence their impressive collection of back vintages. We had a truly and unforgettable experience thanks to Luis d’Oliveiras.

1973 Verdelho
A wine displaying sweet citrus notes, confit lemon peel, dried apricot. Golden syrup, caramel and spicy finish.

1929 Tinta Negra
Tinta Negra isn’t part of the 4 noble varieties, however this wine was rather impressive, showing toffee, butterscotch, roasted peanuts, orange marmelade and a bit of smokiness.

1875 Moscatel
D’Oliveiras is the only producer of Madeira to still have stocks remaining of Moscatel.
Very sweet wine with roasted figs and raisins and toffee character along savoury and mushroomy notes.

Blandy’s
1980 Terrantez
Only three 18L produced and 67 Pall Mall bought one of them. Soon to be included in the by the glass selection!
A wonderful mix of bitter orange peel, honeycomb, walnuts, hazelnuts and sesame.

Barbeito
50 Years Old Bastardo
Layers of butterscotch and Christmas cake, caramelised orange peel, rich yet balanced with a long finish.

40 Years Old Malvasia
Rich and textural showing raisins and caramelised figs, along with exotic wood and sweet ginger.
