If you never try, you never know – Colares
The wines from Adega Viuva Gomes, Colares are totally unique.
At end of the 19th century, phylloxera destroyed almost all vineyards in Europe, except Colares. It was almost like winning the vinous lottery – the world was suffering from an extreme wine shortage, and Colares had the golden ticket…
The results of the Atlantic influence and sandy soils are wines with a natural, fresh acidity and in the reds, a strong tannic structure. The painstaking work picking the grapes from these sprawling vines, along with the challenging terroir make the end result even more special. Pictured here are the exquisite expressions from winemaker Diogo Baeta, who now owns the family winery. He says that “today, we are making an effort to keep this hidden region alive, by maintaining what already exists and creating more.”
The red wines are based on the Ramisco (planted on sandy soils called Chão de Areia) and Castelao, and the whites based on Malvasia – varieties grown only in this region and the only two varieties allowed to produce Colares. The red wines age beautifully and are reminiscent of old Barolo, evolving continuously in the glass and developing stunning tertiary characters.
