First Growth Contenders – Jane Anson’s Five Châteaux
On 17th October, we welcomed Jane Anson to the Club as part of our expert series. During this tasting, Jane weighed up the drawbacks and advantages of the system, and suggested five châteaux that are worthy of First Growth status: Léoville Las Cases, La Mission Haut-Brion, Palmer, Pichon Comtesse and Montrose.
Two of Bordeaux’s greatest vintages were tasted; 2000, now in its prime and 2010, one of the great new classics, now nearly ten years old.
Terry, our Head Sommelier was lucky enough to get in on the action. He commented that “it was a brilliant tasting with the 2000s showing particularly well. The guests loved the opulence and exotic nature of Château Palmer, which gathered the most votes from our Members. 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion was showing equally well, with dark fruit flavours and cigar leaf nuances. The majority of the 2010s were still in their infancy, but the potential is incredible – it will be an exciting vintage to watch”.
