Sommeliers’ International Women’s Day by-the-glass selections

We’re raising a glass to the women shaping the world of wine.

To mark International Women’s Day, we asked our Clubroom sommeliers to highlight some of their favourite wines from female producers currently on our by-the-glass list. From Champagne and Burgundy to Swartland, Montalcino and the Loire, these wines reflect a breadth of styles and philosophies.

We invite you do discover their selections and the women behind these labels. In keeping with Club tradition, each wine has been paired with dishes from the menu – simply ask your sommelier for their recommendations.

CHAMPAGNE

2015 Henriot Cuvée des Enchanteleurs – Suzuna Nitta, Senior Sommelier

Maison Henriot was founded in 1808 by Apolline Henriot, the young widow of Nicolas Henriot. Today, the house is overseen by Alice Tétienne in her role as Chef de Cave.

‘Cuvée des Enchanteleurs’ returns with the 2015 vintage, originally born in 1889. Its name pays tribute to the “enchanteleurs,” the artisans of the shadows – cellar craftsmen who traditionally stacked the bottles on laths and watched over their slow, silent evolution.

The 2015 Cuvée des Enchanteleurs is composed of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, all from Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne. After 10 years of ageing on the lees, the Champagne reveals beautiful notes of biscuit and brioche, supported by the opulent, fleshy fruit character of the warm and generous 2015 vintage.

We are honoured to present this wine for International Women’s Day in tribute to Apolline and Alice, strong female figures in Champagne.

2019 Marie Courtin, Èloquence Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut – Alexandra Doyon, Junior Sommelier

Dominique Moreau is a name we don’t want to miss this International Women’s Day. Her small domaine, Marie Courtin, was established in 2005 and is named in honour of her grandmother, whom Dominique described as “a strong woman of the earth.”

From just 2.5 hectares of organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards, Dominique crafts Champagnes that reflect not only their terroir but also her personality. The wines are powerful yet elegant, with a strong backbone – much like Dominique herself.

The domaine is located in the village of Polisot in the southern part of Champagne within the Côte des Bar, where the soils share geological similarities with neighbouring Chablis. With no dosage after disgorgement, the wines are presented exactly as they are – nothing added, nothing concealed.

WHITE

2022 Savennières, Roche-aux-Moines, Domaine aux Moines – Suzuna Nitta, Senior Sommelier

Tessa Laroche represents the second generation at Domaine aux Moines, one of Savennières’ most iconic estates in the Loire Valley. The domaine has been shaped by a strong female lineage: her mother, Monique Laroche, founded it in 1981 and was instrumental in establishing the reputation of Roche-aux-Moines.

Roche-aux-Moines is one of only two climats in Savennières with its own AOC status, officially recognised in 2011. Its schist-rich soils give Chenin Blanc pronounced minerality and firm structure, while south and south-west facing slopes ensure optimal ripening.

From just 10 hectares, the wines show honeysuckle aromatics and a powerful, structured palate that reflect both their terroir and the strength of the women behind the estate.

2020 Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Ölberg, Kühling-Gillot – Kosuke Abe, Junior Sommelier

Caroline Spanier Gillot is one of the most exciting women in wine. Managing her family’s estate since 2002, she is an oenologist, businesswoman and mother of two. What has made Caroline’s work so special is her dedication in the vineyard and her experimentation in the cellar.

In 2014 she won Germany’s Winemaker of the Year, becoming the first female to receive this prestigious prize. Her dry Rieslings are benchmarks for the Rheinhessen.

Ölberg is their southernmost vineyard in the Roter Hang. Bone-dry Riesling with a touch of salty minerality unfolds like a blooming summer meadow, lifted by delicate hints of honeydew melon and fresh nectarine zest.

2016 Château-Chalon, Marie-Pierre Chevassu-Fassenet – Kin Ting Eric Li, Junior Sommelier

We are delighted to highlight Domaine Marie-Pierre Chevassu, an independent Jura grower working with quiet conviction. Farming a small estate, she focuses on traditional regional styles, particularly Savagnin, with minimal intervention in vineyard and cellar. Healthy fruit, patience and long élevage define her approach.

Her Vin Jaune 2016 follows the classic method: Savagnin aged over six years in old barrels under a veil of yeast, without topping up.

The result is precise and structured, with notes of walnut, curry spice, dried citrus and a pronounced saline backbone. More than a technical achievement, this wine reflects endurance, discipline and deep respect for time – a testament to Marie-Pierre’s steady, thoughtful craft.

RED

2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune, Les Bas Liards, Sarah Anne Marsh – Giacomo Apolloni, Head Sommelier Clubroom

Sarah Anne Marsh MW’s journey is as inspiring as her wines are expressive. Sarah became a Master of Wine in 2004 and spent more than a decade tasting and writing about Burgundy, building deep knowledge and strong relationships with growers across the Côte d’Or.

In 2017 she fulfilled her ambition of making her own wines, starting by sourcing fruit from trusted domaines such as organic Savigny-lès-Beaune, Les Bas Liards. Her approach is rooted in allowing the terroir to speak – choosing tiny parcels of meticulously cared-for vines and guiding the grapes gently through fermentation and ageing.

Her Savigny-lès-Beaune captures the lighter, refined character of this village site with pure red fruit, soft tannins and a balanced texture that reflects both the vineyard and Sarah’s careful, terroir-focused style.

2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Vigna Bacia, Stella di Campalto – Nico Cassetta, Junior Sommelier

At Podere San Giuseppe in the heart of Montalcino, Stella di Campalto has led her estate since 1992. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woodland, the property functions as a balanced natural ecosystem. She farms with certified organic and biodynamic principles, vinifying each parcel separately to preserve its identity.

Her Brunello comes from distinct crus – Vigna Bacia, Vigna Curva, Vigna al Sasso, Vigna Galante, Vigna Cielo and Vigna Bosco – each expressing different nuances of Montalcino’s Sangiovese.

Yet all share a signature of elegance, precision and depth. Spontaneous fermentations, restrained oak and long ageing produce wines of harmony and longevity. For International Women’s Day, we are delighted to pour Vigna Bacia by the glass.

2017 Syrah “Iron”, Mullineux (en magnum) – Ranjeet Shirke, Senior Sommelier

Born in San Francisco in 1979, Andrea Mullineux discovered winemaking at 17. After studying at UC Davis and working in Napa Valley and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, she co-founded Mullineux Wines in Swartland in 2007.

Championing dry farming, minimal intervention and terroir expression, she famously describes tannins as shapes: granite gives “angular” structure, schist more “boxy” form. Her work earned her Wine Enthusiast’s 2016 International Winemaker of the Year and Platter’s Winery of the Year five times by 2023.

The “Iron” Syrah 2017 comes from a single dry-farmed parcel near Malmesbury grown on iron-rich soils. Whole-bunch fermented and aged in large oak, it shows dark berries, spice, orange peel and white pepper, with velvety texture and firm tannins.
