Châteaux Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion dinner – Saturday 18th January

‘I drank a sort of French wine called Ho-Bryan that hath a good and most particular taste I never met with’— Samuel Pepys, 10th April 1663

The entry of the English diaryist Pepys is the earliest recorded mention of Château Haut-Brion. As tasting notes go, it perhaps lacks a little detail. But as far as Château Haut-Brion goes, that ‘most particular’ descriptor perfectly encapsulates the unique qualities of this vaunted property, which two centuries later became the only estate outside the Médoc to be included in Bordeaux’s landmark 1855 Classification. Today, its sits apart as a bastion of the region.

Perhaps one of the few Bordeaux estates that can compete with its heritage is its neighbouring – and, as of 1983, sister – estate, La Mission Haut-Brion, which dates back at least to the 16th century. Sitting just across the road in Pessac-Léognan, a mere 20 minutes from the centre of Bordeaux, La Mission has, in recent years, all but matched its renown, reaching the status of an unofficial sixth first growth.

If Haut-Brion’s wines are known for their statuesque reserve, those of La Mission show a little more immediacy and charm. We are thrilled to invite Members to what promises to be a quite stunning evening, featuring the wines of both estates. Over an indulgent four-course dinner, hosted by the properties’ Guillaume-Alexandre Marx, guests will enjoy the rare opportunity to discover both the red and white wines of the properties, with vintages including the critically acclaimed 2005 and 2010.

Members will also discover the wine of sister estate Château Quintus, the St-Emilion grand cru that was added to the stable in 2011.

And with a thoughtfully paired menu designed by our Head Chef Luca Tassan to showcase the wines’ extraordinary complexity, this really is an occasion that, even by our standards, will be hard to match. Join us for an unforgettable journey through the rich history and trailblazing innovations of two true Bordeaux legends.
