Three-vintage Insignia dinner with Napa pioneer Joseph Phelps – Monday 23rd March
In the early 1970s, Joe Phelps had the perfect view of Napa Valley’s burgeoning winemaking boom. Then a Colorado construction magnate, he was commissioned to build one of what would become a spate of new wineries in the region – and promptly fell in love with the valley.
Immediately sensing Napa’s potential, he wasted no time in forging a new path, purchasing a former cattle ranch in 1973 and converting it to vineyards. With the likes of Warren Winiarski of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Ted Duncan of Silver Oak, and Jim Barrett of Chateau Montelena, Phelps quickly became a key member of a remarkable group of entrepreneurs.
Over the following half-century, Joseph Phelps has grown to own and farm more than 500 acres across 11 vineyards in Napa and Sonoma. And since its second vintage, the winery has been best known for its premium, Cabernet-dominant blend Insignia – the top wine of each vintage, blended accorded to the conditions, and a long-time favourite of the critics.
We’re delighted to welcome Phelps’ head winemaker Ryan Knoth to present three vintages of this flagship wine over a paired dinner with a specially-created menu. Limited to just 10 Members, and with the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon and Krug Grand Cuvée to boot, the intimate setting will allow for detailed exploration not only of the wines but of the California winemaking scene as a whole.
