The wines of the Hospices de Beaune, both old and new – Monday 3rd November

Burgundy’s annual Hospices de Beaune auction is a benchmark of the international wine calendar. The event sees barrels of wine from the latest vintage, featuring most of the Côte de Beaune’s most famous sites, bid on by négociants, merchants and private buyers, with the proceeds going to the local hospital and other charitable causes.

Maison Albert Bichot has been the major buyer at the Hospices de Beaune for many years now and we are pleased to welcome the house’s technical director, Matthieu Mangenot, to present a tasting for Members in advance of this year’s auction, which will take place on Sunday November 16th.

Matthieu will present a pair of wines (red and white) to illustrate the qualities of the 2025 vintage – and to talk through the process of assessing them, along with tips on the likely availability, pricing and logistics of the wines featuring in this year’s auction. He has also selected six Hospices de Beaune wines that are now in bottle, from a range of vintages, highlighting some of the most famous cuvées, to show how these wines develop over time.

Matthieu will be joined on stage by our good friend – and longstanding 67 Member – Richard Bampfield MW, to provide further insight into the mechanics of this Burgundian tradition. Technology permitting, we will also be joined by Ludivine Griveau-Gemma, régisseur at Domaines des Hospices de Beaune, who will provide an update on the 2025 vintage, live from Burgundy.

The wines we will be tasting:
2020 Saint Romain, Cuvée Joseph Menault, Domaine des Hospices de Beaune
2022 Meursault, Cuvée Loppin, Domaine des Hospices de Beaune
2018 Savigny-les-Beaune (Rouge), 1er Cru Cuvée Arthur Girard, Domaine des Hospices de Beaune
