The best of cool-climate Australian Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and more – Tuesday 14th May

If any region is responsible for showcasing the more restrained, elegant side of Australian wine, it is surely Victoria. The country’s second-smallest state (which is to say, about the size of the British Isles) boasts a host of boutique wine regions, producing fabulous Pinot Noir, luscious Shiraz and some of the world’s most elegant, subtle Chardonnays.

Due to years of mass marketing of Aussie plonk, however, such well-crafted, nuanced wines are far less well-known than they should be. Nina Caplan is determined to change that, and we are delighted to welcome her to the club to host an evening showcasing some of the best vineyards in this cool-climate state, from the green spaces and ancient soils of the Yarra Valley to the ocean-cooled volcanic expanse of the Mornington Peninsula. Featured wineries include Bass Phillip, By Farr and Giant Steps.

Nina Caplan is an award-winning journalist and author writing on wine and travel for The Times, Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine and Club Oenologique. She is based in London and Burgundy but, as the daughter of two Melburnians, has deep roots in Australian soil; she goes back at least once a year and has written about the country for everyone from National Geographic Traveller to Conde Nast Traveller.

Join her to discover these thrilling, often overlooked wines.
