Standout California Chardonnay & Pinot Noir with Kistler winemaker Jason Kesner – Tuesday 2nd June (New-Member)

Kistler has long been acclaimed as one of California’s most considered, expressive producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Founded in 1978, the vision from the start was to reveal the transparency of vineyard site, with Steve Kistler keen to lessen his imprint on the vineyards he worked with and the wines that result. This is not necessarily as easy as it sounds, with Chardonnay and Pinot the varietals most easily marked by heavy-handed farming and the imprint of the maker.

Steve retired in 2017, passing winemaking to Jason Kesner, who, after a long apprenticeship, continues to evolve the estate’s style while respecting the legacy of its founder.

‘Since the beginning, we’ve been farmers first,’ says Jason. ‘Because of the plant material we use, because of the sites we’ve chosen, because of our farming, the fruit can and will reach a perfect balance where it is the only ingredient needed to make exceptional, delicious wines.’

Today, Kistler works with 15 vineyards, stretching from western Sonoma County to Carneros, on the border with Napa Valley. Each vineyard-designate cuvée is vinified using traditional Burgundian techniques: low yields; barrel-ferments with indigenous yeasts; ageing in 60% new French oak; lees-contact through full malolactic fermentation; and bottling – unfiltered and unfined – after 12–18 months.

These are benchmark California wines. We invite you to discover them with the man who makes them.
