Private dinner with Harlan Estate owner Will Harlan and vintages back to 1995 – Friday 25th September
When, in 1984, Bill Harlan founded what was to become one of Napa Valley’s standout wineries, he famously drew up a 200-year plan. The move, says his son Will, was about ‘wanting to create something that would be around for hundreds of years’.
It’s an approach, he says, that holds particular resonance in the wine world, since: ‘I’m not sure, if you’re aspiring to create wine at the very highest level, that you can accomplish that in one generation.’ And as the second generation to lead the estate, Will is in the perfect position to know – and to shape the next stage of its evolution.
Almost immediately after the release of the first vintage of Harlan Estate in 1990, the wine was elevated to elite status in the Californian canon – a position it has held ever since through an unerring attention to detail and an uncommon marriage of power and precision. Recent years have seen a move towards a more ‘pure, gentle, elegant’ style of wine – ‘though I would call it a culture rather than a style,’ Will told us when he hosted a tasting for our wine team on a flying visit when last in London.
‘We’ve spent the last 40 years – which is obviously a short period of time in the wine world – empirically trying to understand the property,’ he said at the time. ‘But I think we’re on a more intuitive part of our journey now.’
We’re delighted to welcome Will back to London next month, for a longer visit, and we invite Members to join him to hear more about this journey – and to taste seven vintages of Harlan Estate going back to 1995 – over an intimate dinner featuring a specially created menu.
Please note this is a small event for just 11 guests, and we expect tickets to sell fast…
