Panel discussion – Where is English wine heading and how high can it go? – Wednesday 21st June

Are we being biased to suggest that no wine style has made greater progress in quality over the last 20 years than English wine? Certainly there can be no other region that has managed to create a wholly new – and increasingly recognised – category of wine…

But today that style is evolving, as producers become more and more adventurous – and ambitious. On the one hand we have established, well-funded brands producing prestige cuvées to compete with Krug and Dom Pérignon; on the other we have urban wineries making wines under railway arches in an ever-expanding range of styles.

So just how high should English wineries be aiming? Which are the most successful styles of English wine? And is there still such a thing as an English wine identity?

Former editor of Decanter and Club Oenologique magazines Guy Woodward has been a long-time champion – and critic – of the English wine scene. He will lead a panel of winemakers and commentators through what promises to be a lively debate on the current state of the nation, as we taste through a diverse range of wines from across the country.

Panel:
Tom Hewson, author of Tim Atkin MW’s English Wine Report and Champagne correspondent for Decanter
James Lambert, managing director and head winemaker, Lyme Bay
Laura Rhys MS, global brand ambassador, Gusbourne
Sergio Verrillo, owner and winemaker, Blackbook Winery
Moderator: Guy Woodward, former editor, Decanter and Club Oenologique
