Mid-Autumn Festival: Wine & Mooncakes Masterclass with Janet Z. Wang – Monday 2nd October

In Chinese culture, the roundness and fullness of the harvest moon is a symbol of reunion, abundance and fulfilment. The mid-autumn festival, also known as the mooncake festival, is one of China’s biggest festivals – a time for friends and family to unite and enjoy each other’s company, to count blessings and share the finest food and wine.

Mooncakes are an essential part of the festivities, and come in a plethora of flavours and styles. We are delighted to welcome our host Janet Z. Wang back to the St. James’s Room, who among her many talents possesses a rare gift for pairing mooncakes and wine.

Join us for a fun evening spent exploring Janet’s creative pairings, as she reveals the cultural and agricultural significance of the moon in China and much of East Asia.

Have you considered, for instance, that the much-heralded viticultural practice of biodynamics, a system based on the phases of the moon, has formed the foundation of Asian agricultural practices and calendars for many millennia? What does that mean for the wine and saké cultural history of China and Japan? Consider this a delicious way to find out…

Janet Z. Wang is the author of The Chinese Wine Renaissance and wine expert for Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, among various media appearances.
