Meet England’s most famous winemaker, Dermot Sugrue – Thursday 22nd June

‘Monumental’. ‘Spectacular, England’s best’. ‘The best winemaker in the UK’. These are just a few of the litany of compliments showered on Dermot Sugrue and his wines over the years by the likes of Hugh Johnson OBE, Susie Barrie MW and the legendary Steven Spurrier.

We are therefore thrilled to welcome Dermot, his wine Ana and their unequivocally world-class sparkling wines to the Club for what is guaranteed to be an evening of spectacular fizz.

Dermot is widely recognised as one of the most influential winemakers on the English wine scene over the last two decades. His first major role was in 2003 when he joined Nyetimber, becoming winemaker a year later and overseeing its emergence as one of the world’s greatest sparkling wine producers.

In 2006 he joined the fledgling Wiston Estate to fulfil his ambition of setting up a major winemaking operation. The same year, he planted Sugrue South Downs’ Trouble with Dreams vineyard in West Sussex, and in 2022 he left Wiston to commit fully to his own label.

Dermot’s list of awards and achievements border on countless. His wines have won international trophies at all the major wine competitions, and a plethora of other awards at competitions both at home and abroad, including Wiston Estate winning UK Winery of the Year at the Wine GB Awards in 2018.

Born in Croatia, Ana has extensive winemaking experience around the world, including in Spain, Austria, California, New Zealand and even Peru. In 2020 she taught winemaking at Plumpton College for a year before dedicating her all to Sugrue South Downs.
