Lunch with St-Emilion star Beau-Séjour Bécot – Thursday 11th September
Over the course of any week, a stream of winemakers tend to pass through the doors of the Club, be it for a quick meeting, a tasting or a long lunch. Often such rendez-vous are trade-only affairs, limited to wine buyers or press – which, from a Member’s perspective, we always feel is something of a shame.
Naturally, when we receive prior notice of such visits, our events team does its utmost to organise an evening affair for Members. Sadly, when we got word that Julien Barthe, owner of St-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé Beau-Séjour Bécot, was in town next month, schedules didn’t quite align. We were keen, though, that Members should not miss out, and wondered, therefore, why not do a weekday lunch? We are delighted, then, to invite Members to just such an occasion, hosted by Julien himself.
The Bécot family has owned Beau-Séjour Bécot since 1969, after which it endured a somewhat turbulent existence for several decades, losing and regaining its 1er Grand Cru Classé status. Not so long ago, in the Parker era, the wines were somewhat turbo-charged. Under third-generation Juliette Bécot and her husband Julien’s guidance, however, and with the increasingly in-demand Thomas Duclos taking over from consultant Michel Rolland, there has been a major stylistic turnaround.
Julien’s arrival in 2016 kickstarted a mission to showcase the property’s outstanding terroir atop St-Emilion’s limestone plateau more vividly in the bottle. This has meant extensive work in the vineyard (including new plantings of Cabernet Franc) and a similar overhaul in the cellar, via ultra-light extraction, and cutting back the use of new oak in favour of larger cask and amphoras.
The resultant elegant, balanced wines are all the better, of course, for lunchtime sipping. So in an era when they say the days of the long lunch are over, here’s your chance to prove them wrong…
