Live from the Vines: Neudorf Vineyards
Hosted by Ronan Sayburn MS, Judy Finn, Tim Finn & Rosie Finn
Neudorf Vineyards began life in 1978 when Judy and Tim Finn (self-admittedly still riding the ‘back-to-the-land’ wave of the late 1960s) laid down their first vines, with the intention of crafting wines faithful to their soils.
A general dearth of viticultural knowledge in New Zealand at the time led to the Finns adopting a suck it and see approach, with a whole host of varieties going into the ground. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir proved to be star performers and the launchpad for the organically run Neudorf where you will also find Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Albariño.
The addition to the team of daughter Rosie and winemaker Todd Stevens has allowed Judy and Tim to ease off the gas, although that spirit of creating honest, land-shaped wine remains at its core, as Stevens notes: ‘We have an exceptional site here at Neudorf and it demands little from us in the winery. If we can guide grapes into wine of integrity without buggering it up, we are content.’
