In conversation with Jancis Robinson MW – Monday 26th October
Described by Decanter magazine as ‘the most respected wine critic and journalist in the world’, Jancis Robinson is also arguably the world’s most prolific. Aside from overseeing her eponymous website, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, and serving as the long-time wine correspondent of the Financial Times, she has been a pioneering broadcaster on wine, and the author and editor of countless books, from all five editions of The Oxford Companion to Wine to the trailblazing opus Wine Grapes.
The first person outside the wine trade to qualify as a Master of Wine, she has since been awarded an OBE, France’s Officier du Mérite Agricole, six James Beard gongs, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Wine & Spirits Competition and the Institute of Masters of Wine, among countless other accolades.
One of the pillars of a 50-year wine writing career has been the encyclopaedic World Atlas of Wine, which she has co-authored since its fifth edition. A benchmark reference tool when it first appeared in 1971, subsequent editions have cemented its status as the most authoritative wine reference work available.
We are delighted to welcome Jancis to the Club to outline some of the elements that define the newly released ninth edition – the first since 2019 – in conversation with the editor of our Back Label newsletter, Guy Woodward.
Jancis has chosen ten wines to illuminate the conversation, all of which nod to the trends she feels define the most notable recent vinous developments: winemaking at the earth’s extremes, from Scandinavia to Patagonia; emerging regions, from Lisboa to Azores; cooler-climate winemaking; viticultural advances; volcanic terroir; and, of course, the phenomenon that is English wine.
Tickets can be purchased with a copy of the new World Atlas of Wine (RRP £60) – while to read an interview that we conducted with Jancis to mark her 50th year in wine, see here.
