In 1961 an ambitious young winemaker working for Berlucchi, Franco Ziliani, was permitted to pursue his ambition to produce a fine sparkling wine, and made 3,000 bottles of “Pinot di Franciacorta”. The next vintage yielded 20,000 bottles and eventually 100,000.
By the time the region was granted DOC status in 1967, there were 11 producers of sparkling Franciacorta, which eventually grew to the 6.7m bottles that are produced today. The region became the first Italian Brut to receive DOCG status in 1995 after the formation of the Consorzio di Franciacorta in 1990. Made via the Methode Champenoise that sees the second fermentation occur in bottle, the wines of Franciacorta are increasingly seen as a viable rival to those of Champagne.
Join Head Sommelier Federico Moccia and friend of the Club Nelson Pari, in association with the Consorzio of Franciacorta, for a walk-around tasting highlighting 33 of the finest Franciacorta wine producers.
Many of the winemakers themselves will present their wines, in an informative look at what the region has to offer.
We hope to see you there.
