Exploring Stellenbosch’s stellar Cabernets – Wednesday 22nd May

Cabernet Sauvignon is the undisputed king of red grapes. But there are several regions vying for the title of the king of Cabernet. And while the variety’s spiritual home in Bordeaux is the obvious contender, and there are strong claims from the likes of Margaret River, Coonawarra, Napa Valley and the Maipo Valley, in recent years, South Africa’s Stellenbosch has gained an increasing hold among Cabernet lovers.

One of the world’s great wine regions, and undoubtedly the power base of the South African industry, Stellenbosch is home to many of the country’s great names – and wines. And while it yields an array of wine styles, it is Cabernet for which the region is best known, via an increasingly reputed blend of structure and elegance, complexity and ageability., via an increasingly reputed blend of structure and elegance, complexity and ageability.

The 2017 vintage has already been held up as the greatest of the century so far, and we invite you to discover some of its finest examples, along with two library wines with two decades’ cellar age. We will delve into the terroir of the region, explore its different renderings, and consider just why these wines have leapt to the fore in recent years.
