Eight-vintage vertical of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne – Thursday 2nd July

While its origins can be traced back to 1734, the true Taittinger story began in 1931 when the historic Château de la Marquetterie was taken over by Pierre Taittinger. Now in its fourth generation, Taittinger is one of the few Champagne houses still owned and managed by the family whose name appears on the bottle.

Amid a fine range of wines, the prestige cuvée Comtes de Champagne sits at the top of the Taittinger tree. First released in 1952, this blanc de blancs is made from first-press Chardonnay grapes from five grand-cru villages. Produced only in exceptional vintages and released only after extended ageing in Taittinger’s famous chalk cellars, Comtes has earned its place among the finest expressions of Champagne.

The cuvée is named in honour of Thibaud IV le Chansonnier, Count of Champagne, King of Navarre (1222-1253), statesman, poet, adventurer and patron of the arts. Having joined the Crusades in 1239, Thibaud is said to have brought back two treasures on his return from the east: the Damask rose and a grape variety thought to be a precursor of Chardonnay.

Our modern-day crusader is Taittinger chef de caves Alexandre Ponnavoy, who we are delighted to welcome to the Club to host an astonishing eight-vintage vertical of this acclaimed wine. Having joined Taittinger in 2015, Alexandre took over from his longstanding predecessor Loïc Dupont, who had served for 34 years, in 2018. Responsible for the winemaking and blending of all the Taittinger wines, Alexandre also oversees Taittinger’s nascent English foray, Domaine Evremond in Kent.

We’re sure you’ll be keen to join him for what should be a fantastic evening.
