Cos d’Estournel dinner with vintages back to 1989 – Wednesday 15th May

Cos d’Etournel has always stood slightly apart from the other second growths on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Certainly among the elite as a ‘super-second’ but also somehow harnessing a particular identity all of its own.

Maybe it’s because of its position, at the very northern end of the Médoc, in the perennially unfashionable commune of Saint-Estèphe. Maybe it’s because of the fact that it is separated from Château Lafite merely by a small stream, and seems to have more in common with the Pauillac first growths than with many of its Saint-Estèphe counterparts. Or maybe it’s on account of its curious marriage of the eastern-inspired, exotic architecture with its initially austere and imposing but ultimately rich and rewarding wines.

Whatever it is, for many wine lovers, Cos holds a special allure, an appeal that has only been heightened under the stewardship of hotelier and industrialist Michel Reybier, who has led a rigorous overhaul in vineyard and cellar since 2000, culminating in the property being certified as fully organic this year.

We are delighted, then, to welcome Dominique Arangoïts, the château’s technical director,  to the club for a rather special dinner in the St James’s Room, showcasing wines spanning four decades and four superlative vintages, along with a couple of surprises along the way.

As well as the grand vin from the reputed 2010, 2000 and 1989 vintages, guests will enjoy the rarely seen white wine, introduced in 2005 and limited to an annual production of fewer than 800 cases. There will also be a chance to taste the wine of sister estate and fellow Saint-Estèphe château, fifth growth Cos Labory, along with the 2014 vintage of second wine Pagodes des Cos.

Our executive chef has designed a menu specially to complement the wines for what should be an evening to live long in the memory. We hope to see you there.

The menu:
Amuse bouche:
Handpicked crab, nashi pear, salty fingers
Starter:
Salmon tartare, horseradish, white balsamic pickled cucumber
Main:
Kentish lamb cannon, minted broad beans, onion
Dessert:
Yorkshire rhubarb warm tart & buttermilk ice cream
