Château Chauvin – Grand Cru Classé star of Saint-Émilion – Wednesday 8th February
Sylvie Cazes, of the famed Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages, was the first member of her family to buy an estate on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
In 2014, she and her children (Julie, Pierre and François Régimbeau) crossed the river to purchase Château Chauvin, a 15ha property situated in the north-west of Saint-Émilion, close to the border with Pomerol, and which has been a Grand Cru Classé since the first classification of Saint-Émilion wines in 1955.
Sylvie’s arrival prompted a major overhaul of the estate, both in the cellar and the vineyard, where detailed studies led to significant and strategic replanting. The vineyard today sits on soil that echoes Pomerol and comprises a single block which surrounds the château; it is given over to 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Sylvie is one of Bordeaux’s most well-known and dynamic women. As well as owning Château Chauvin, she is president of the advisory board of Château Lynch-Bages, owner of Le Chapon Fin restaurant in Bordeaux, and president of la Cité du Vin. This is a rare and wonderful opportunity for Members to not only taste the wines of this great Saint-Émilion estate, but also spend time with Sylvie herself.
