Champagne Henriot’s Cuvée des Enchanteleurs back to 1989 – Wednesday 25th November
Established in 1808, Champagne Henriot has, over the years, built up an enviable collection of vineyards spanning 17 grands crus and 42 premiers crus, primarily in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. With such a wealth of sources to choose from, it is one of the few Champagne houses to boast not one but two prestige cuvées.
Henriot is best known for its affinity with Chardonnay, as seen in 1990 when Joseph Henriot began setting aside, in a single vat, a portion of outstanding Blanc de Blancs from four of the finest Chardonnay grands crus. In so doing, he created a perpetual reserve rather than a conventional vintage or multi-vintage blend, replenished each year to build layers of complexity while retaining freshness. The result is the Cuvée 38, a particularly ambitious prestige blanc de blancs, produced in very limited quantities and bottled only in magnum.
More notable still is Henriot’s second prestige bottling, Cuvée des Enchanteleurs, crafted since 1889 from equal proportions of the house’s six founding grands crus. In 2005, the cuvée was renamed Hemera, after the Greek goddess of daylight, to reflect a shift in style towards greater freshness and elegance. The change in style worked but the name didn’t, and earlier this year, with the release of the 2015 vintage, the house announced a return to the historic Enchanteleurs branding.
Enchanteleurs or Hemera, we’re delighted to welcome Henriot’s vineyard and winemaking manager Corentin Bazetoux to guide us through six vintages of the wine, as well as Cuvée 38, across an eight-wine masterclass. Trained in Bordeaux, Corentin’s early career took him from the Loire Valley to the Médoc (Château Gruaud-Larose) and even Western Australia (Cape Mentelle). He returned to France in 2021 as a viticultural consultant advising winemakers on behalf of the Champagne Committee, and now assists Henriot cellar master Alice Tétienne, focusing particularly on precision viticulture, climate adaptation and sustainable development.
