BYOB with the Barolo Boys – Wednesday 11th November

It’s been a while since we held a BYOB dinner, so what better way to resurrect the format than with a Piedmont-inspired autumnal affair?

Take your seat in a candlelit St James’s Room as Head of Wine Operations Federico Moccia welcomes back former colleague and perennial sidekick Nelson Pari for a night dedicated to their favourite wine.

Fede and Nelson continue to bang the drum for Barolo, visiting the region regularly to report back on vineyards and vintages. For this latest event they will be joined by two notable winemaker-owners: Nicola Oberto of Trediberri; and Andrea Farinetti of Fontanafredda and Borgogno.

Nicola Oberto founded the organically certified Trediberri with his father less than 20 years ago, in 2007. Set on the western edge of La Morra with holdings in the celebrated cru of Rocche dell’Annunziata, its wines have, in a short period of time, become lauded for their freshness, finesse and drinkability.

Fontanafredda, by contrast, is one of Barolo’s most historic estates, founded in 1858 in Serralunga d’Alba. Its 120 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, which yield a range of Barolos including several single-vineyard wines, were acquired by Eataly founder Oscar Farinetti in 2008. Also now in the same ownership is the even more venerable Borgogno, which dates back to 1761 and is renowned for its adherence to long fermentations and extended ageing in large oak cask. Both estates are overseen by Oscar Farinetti’s son Andrea.

Andrea and Nicola are perfectly placed to present an overview of the current state of play in this increasingly popular region – and we’re hoping they will also delve deep into their cellars to unearth some notable bottles. Members are encouraged to do the same and bring along their own special bottle (or magnum, of course) to further elevate the evening. Perhaps a vaunted vintage or intriguing curio that  the Barolo Boys won’t have tried, to match Executive Chef Dan Page’s specially designed menu.
