Burgundy: The Viticultural Revolution with William Kelley – Thursday 2nd March

The last handful of years has witnessed a viticultural revolution in Burgundy, unprecedented since the era of phylloxera. The manner in which vineyards are planted, how soils are cultivated and the way canopies are managed are all being rethought, with profound consequences for the wine in the glass.

In this masterclass, William Kelley of The Wine Advocate explores this movement through the lens of some of Burgundy’s leading practitioners’ wines, ranging from grand cru vineyards to more humble appellations, all united by a common pursuit of excellence and willingness to adapt in a changing climate.

We are delighted to welcome William to the St. James’s Room for the first time, in what is sure to be an insightful and memorable evening spent tasting some truly exceptional Burgundy wines. Members should keep their eyes keenly trained on their inboxes for further exciting events with William in anticipation of the 2025 opening of our new Club in Beaune.

William Kelley fell in love with wine while studying at Oxford, where he presided over the university’s prestigious Wine Circle for three years while completing a doctorate in history.

In addition to hosting tastings with many of the Old World’s greatest wineries, ranging from Bordeaux first growths to boutique producers such as Yves Gangloff and Marta Rinaldi, he brought many of California’s most celebrated winemakers to Oxford for the first time.

Kelley had the privilege to cut his teeth as a taster on many of the great wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. After a stint covering Burgundy for Decanter magazine and working harvests in both California and the Côte d’Or, he made the move to The Wine Advocate in 2017, where his firsthand experience making wine of his own in Burgundy and California informs his writing style.

We look forward to seeing you there.
